Good Friday, folks. We have a cold front working toward the bluegrass state, and this will bring us a nice shot of much cooler air for the coming weekend. While this is happening, Hurricane Matthew is pounding the southeast coast from Florida to the Carolinas.
Let’s start with the weather out there today and roll forward. Temps will be much cooler across the east than the west as winds gust up. There’s the chance for a shower or two in the east, but most areas stay dry.
A strong cold front zips in here early Saturday with gusty winds and a nice temperature drop. There is just the chance for a shower or two early in the day.
Highs Saturday and Sunday stay in the 60s with overnight lows dropping close to 40 degrees by Sunday morning…
Monday looks like another very nice day with temps near 40 to start and highs from 65-70 with mostly sunny skies.
Temps warm back into the 70s for the middle of the week, but another cold front sweeps in on Thursday and unleashes another round of chill…
Once again, I have you all set to track Hurricane Matthew. This includes the interactive radar that includes a ton of awesome tools such as live video streams from storm chasers in the path of Matthew…
Make it a great Friday and take care.
These cold shots are getting me in the mood for snow talk.
The media in Florida is in a frenzy over 60 mph wind gusts. They want this thing to be catastrophic so bad they can’t stand it. Sensationalize.
I agree… I’ve noticed over the past few years, these things get blown way, way out of proportion… they wonder why people refuse to evacuate when the big storms do hit…. it’s because the storms before it that don’t cause as much damage as blown so far out of proportion, the general public doesn’t think the big one will be as bad as they say it will.

and there are literally dozens and dozens more, just two off the top of my head.
Oh and it’s a good thing no one has been throwing out superlative descriptions of this hurricane thus far here on this weather blog.
If CB says it’s incredibly important then I’ll treat it as such.
Too, it has weakened quite a bit since yesterday…bad but not going to be the worst.
I would guess they want error on the side of caution.
Then again maybe you are right and they were just sensationalizing it. I had read several places from people stating the “liberal” media was just trying to scare them. Thing here is this storm really could have been catastrophic. And when things do turn for the worse then you read these types of comments:
“They should have listened and evacuated”
“They were warned, it is their own fault”
And more like that. People would also be highly upset if a storm like this was not “hyped” as very dangerous and then it hit. So it is very hard for these places to win in a situation like this.
“They want this thing to be catastrophic so bad they can’t stand it.”
And I am not so sure on this. Maybe, but I know at least 1 person who works in a position where they forecast in Florida and they most definitely did not and do not want these things to get bad. They just want to inform people of the dangers that are very possible. I could imagine if this storm had shifted a little west and plowed straight into Florida. I am sure it would have been much worse. And we all know that the comments (and others like them) that I listed above would be common.
I was watching live streams on and off all day. Daytona, St. Augustine, Jax Beach and other points between all looked pretty bad to me. I wouldn’t have stayed.
The media’s in a darned if you do, darned if you don’t situation. What if they had been low-key about Sandy and no one evacuated, and 1000s died?
All the best data available said this would be a storm for the record books (and it may still be) — if it turns out to be much less than that, it’s only because it juked 20 or 30 miles east and kept the eyewall off the coast. That’s an awfully thin margin there.
Actually, it was Shepard Smith of Faux Noise who said this storm would kill everyone.
Can’t imagine what CNN and Cuomo are saying..
I live on the west side Of Jacksonville so far rain and 60 MPH winds not to bad I work at a dealership and were open for business!
It is not looking likely that rain will materialize for Eastern KY either as the air is just too dry. I will likely be in a moderate drought when the next update occurs next week here in Harlan, as it is knocking on my door within 50 miles right now…
Amazingly after a wet early and mid summer. I am running on less than 2 inches of rainfall since late August!
