Good Saturday and welcome to a rather ugly weekend. Lots of clouds, rain and chilly temperatures will be noted over the next couple of days. That qualifies as ugly in my book, but we shouldn’t complain too much as a massive ice storm is ongoing just to our west.
The weather out there today will be similar to what we had out there on Friday. Temps in the north will be much colder than what folks in the far south and southeast have to deal with. This may set up a period of some freezing rain in the far north, but everyone else gets cold showers…
Guess what happens on Sunday? More of the same! Rain totals this weekend…
Temps by Monday surge toward the 60s on a strong southwesterly wind. That will usher in additional showers and some rumbles of thunder late in the day and into Tuesday. This is being pushed by a hit and run temperature drop…
Another system will follow that up with a spike in temps and additional rains by later Thursday into Friday.
The models continue to love the idea of a big cutoff low developing across the region later next weekend into early the following week…
That’s likely to be the beginning of another back loaded winter that keeps spring from starting early, or even on time. Sigh.
I will update things a little later today. Have a great Saturday and take care.
As far as back loaded winters go, I think we will have to take whatever winter we can get in KY as we rarely have long duration cold spells anymore with 2015 being the exception. And by long duration, I am meaning over a week straight much below normal temps with little to no break between the next harsh spell like most of Jan/Feb of 2015 gave us.
As far as late springs go, I don’t recall any recent late springs as last year was fairly nice after the first 2 weeks of March were through?
I guess 2015 was a bit late though as we had a little snow and lingering cold in April that year…
I hate to see a late spring , last year my apple trees got frost bit so we had no apples so hopefully that won’t happen this year
We could go from the most snow over two winters to the least snow this winter. Seems warm air is going to probably be the victor with precipitation. Half inch so far in Richmond. An inch maybe if counting total and not what is on ground at once. Did not expect it, but fitting CB’s outlook well so far.
So far his winter.
this
I don’t recall CB saying only half inch of snow for his outlook. Stated average snowfall in jan, below avg. Temps, sometime a ice storm…..we have not seen that at all!
His prediction for Feb was for above avg temps, not much snow. (I hope he’s wrong)
Just my opinion (not hating), it’s been a VERY WEAK winter so far! Yes, temps have went up and down, but not like way below zero..it’s been the opposite (way above 50 and 60)!
I
…only single digits once here in Harlan so far and will very likely end up above normal for monthly average here in my area but maybe February will be different…
If CB thought we’d come anywhere near record low snowfall for a season, he’d have mentioned it or made it the bold prediction along side the ice storm. He. Did. Not.
The outlook did not cover warmer than normal Dec or what looks like a warmer than normal Jan the way we’re going either, so let’s not pretend it did. His outlook that winter is essentially over by mid-Jan and mild takes control the rest of way is still going to be on point and correct so it’s not a total loss as outlooks go so let’s not keep trying to make it out to be better or worse than it really was and accept it warts and all.
The larger question as to seasons, well seasons should be seasonal and you just wait to get through the ones you don’t like. They’re there for very necessary reasons and when they start straying from what’s normal is when problems arise. Unless you live in the Hollow Earth where it doesn’t matter I suppose. I wouldn’t know.
It feels a lot more raw out than the temperature would indicate. Picking up the past week’s blown down limbs and sticks and feeding the critters.
I sure am hoping we get the blocking flip Chris has been talking about and with that – a good snow or two!
Go Big Blue!
Down but not out here in Rodger’s backyard. Flip back to cold in about ten days will hopefully bring snow chances. It only takes one big snow storm for most of us to “forget” this 50s and rain days in mid-Jan. Rodger in Dodger

My long term forecast still doesn’t look good for snow chances. Still hope for a late Jan/Early Feb snowpocolypse.
The sleds are gonna be used as floatation devices in our pond at this rate.
Winter. Where are you? 60’s, to almost 70’s comin up! Crazy!
Anywhere from far southern KY but especially on Southward, I do think has a shot at a top 10 warmest month for January as the 5 days of below normal will not be enough to counter the above average temps….possible 80s in a few spots in the deep south next week!
Already hit 60 here in Harlin at 1pm

Now we know what it feels like to live in Seattle. Cold and rain. No thanks. Hopefully the thoughts of a backloaded winter comes to fruition. As Roger said, “It only takes one big snow to make us forget how boring this winter has been so far”. I for one am staying optimistic for sustained cold and snow. Thanks CB for the dreary update.
I hope it don’t stay mild too long because if it does our trees and bushes will want to start budding.
Guys have faith…signs are pointing toward a snowy feb
I am not fan of late Winters. But it seems that has become the new normal for us. Especially 2015, last year’s one big snow did come in late January. I always liked when snow started in December before the Holidads and it carried through to mid February then Spring arrived early or on time. I don’t think we can consider December a Winter month any longer.
Holidays, that is
Looks every possible snow storm in February will be a southern low and bring a cold rain every time.
So you can already see the Feb storms?
I am a fan of long winters. I hate hot humid weather. Spring weather is fine but we never get it. It will go from 40 to 80 in one week sometimes in our so called spring. The fall was so hot that it was summer till November. Might seem negative, but ky weather is so weird and we all know global warming is real. 80 s in November is all you have to say
I couldn’t agree more, with 70 degree Temps in December and January.
