Good Thursday everyone. We are coming off a wicked day of weather for parts of the state as, at least, one tornado and several funnel clouds slammed the Louisville metro. The tornado swept across Jefferson County causing damage to Churchill Downs and near Papa Johns Stadium, among other places.
Let’s start by saying kudos to the NWS in Louisville as I thought they were outstanding in getting the warnings out in a timely fashion. They followed up those warnings with updates on the location of the tornado and the numerous funnel clouds spotted with the various storms.
While the NWS was on their game… where was the Storm Prediction Center in all this? No watch or even an updated mesoscale discussion on tornadic thunderstorms impacting a sizable metropolitan area? I have said this a few times now… but it has been BAD past few weeks for the SPC!
Here are some videos of the Louisville tornado…
Here is your daily dose of headlines…
– A cold front will slowly cross the state today. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible along this boundary. The best chance for this action will be across the east where some of the storms may be strong or severe.
– Much cooler air moves in for Friday. Temps will likely stay in the 70s for many. The warm biased GFS even shows this…
– An isolated shower or thunderstorm will be possible Friday… especially in the south.
– The weekend looks good in terms of temps with upper 70s and low 80s again for Saturday with low 80s for Sunday. We will need to watch for some storms trying to work in from the west and northwest at some point.
– The pattern from late weekend into early next week looks similar to the one we went through this past weekend into early this week. The heat is going to try to bulge northward across the plains as clusters of thunderstorms rolls southeastward around the outer edge of the heat.
Back to the threat of storms today and the tools you need to follow them…
Today’s Severe Weather Threat
Current Watches
I will have updates as needed so check back. Have a great day and take care.
Has Obama appointed himself as the head of the SPC lately?
Wow is all I can say after watching those videos out of Louisville. It just goes to show you how fast things can get bad. I use to stand outside during warnings to try and experience the bad weather. Not after this season as I’ve learned things can get out of hand in the blink of an eye. What a severe weather season.
LOL
Is there any way i can like this? 🙂
And I give great credit to WAVE 3 in Louisville last night. They went ahead and stay on air during Obamas speech so the people could be safe.
well we just had our claiming horse ship to indiana bout 45 minutes before storm hit.
me and my partner are happy seeing she was stables in S MARGOLIS barn that fell in.
got a winner at belmont today just waiting on track condition and final word from on site. post soon.
Yep-Severe weather czar. They have determined that the storms over Louisville were caused by W……
You people are so misinformed.
It’s your bonehead republicans that voted to cut NWS funding.
And this has to do with SPC watching movies and eating popcorn while a metro area of over a quarter-million people get pummeled….how exactly?
I’ve seen them issue MCDs for cornfields in Iowa, but they can’t put out statements and watches for a populated area? On a day with 2500 joules of CAPE, -7 lifted indices, a cold front nearby, and 70 degree dewpoints? And that recklessness is the fault of the republicans too? I guess that’s par for the course…
Yeah really!!! Seems like the SPC always overhypes big events that never happen, but dont do anything about the little stuff. Reminds me of May 21 of last year.
Hey get real, why dont you get real!!! This is a weather blog, not a place to talk about politics. The comment made by Karl was a joke. Take your political talk somewhere else, cause I sure as heck dont wanna hear about it.
When times are tough, tough decisions have to be made. Your decision is to tax more, typical liberal approach. Give government more and they misuse more. We don’t have a tax problem, we have a spending problem. I’m with WXman on this.
Tornado Warning for Woodford Co! SPC gas MD out for central and eastern Kentucky…watch coming.
Storm is entering western Fayette co. Lexington in it’s path.
I’ll bet a Tornado Warning comes for Fayette soon. Wow..
It’s been issued for fayette Co
Right over 64-75 southern split. Just spoke with the wife who was on Richmond Road near Jacobson Park. She could see the funnel.
I am with you guys on the whole political/Republican comments…gawd, how ridiculous. it does appear there are tornado warnings for Lex/area and parts of Clark County, I live in Rowan County (Morehead), from your professional opinion does it seem these storms will make it this far and say strong or what?
for real? but it hasn’t touched down right?
Come on SPC where is the watches???
Well we have our watches out now till 8pm. Please don’t judge me on this, cause no, I don’t want tornados and people getting injured, property destroyed, but wall clouds/shelve clouds/tornados are really a spectacular sight to behold.
so Weatherman, experienced people, what are your thoughts about a little farther East into Rowan County/Morehead area? This line of storms going to hold together you think?
Fayette until 8?
Yeah they Fayette in the watch till 8pm as well
Actually, the Tornado watch is until 8 Central, 9 Eastern.
oh that puts us till 9 then, thanks for the clarification.
