Good Tuesday, folks. It’s a harsh winter day across the bluegrass state with arctic snow and bitter cold sharing the stage. Travel conditions are terrible for much of our region, leading to all kinds of cancellations and delays.
Some quick thoughts…
- The snow band continues to slowly work across the state, leaving behind several inches as it does so. Local 4″+ amounts will likely show up across central and eastern Kentucky through the day.
- Winds will be gusty, creating some blowing and drifting of the snow.
- Many roads will be snow-covered.
- Temps spend much of today in the 10-15 degree range, with wind chills near zero or below.
- Readings tonight and early Wednesday may drop below zero, with wind chills nearing -10
- Snow showers and flurries will be around on Wednesday with highs back into the teens.

4.0″ at my place 4 miles W/NW of BG. wow.
My in-laws are in Bowling Green. They estimated about 3 and a half inches before they turned in, the snow was still coming down hard.
Nashville TN has only had occasional on and off snow the last few hours. Temperature got well into the 40s Monday afternoon, so the snow was having a little trouble sticking at first but that issue should be short lived as now it’s currently 22. Heavy snow reported in D-i-c-k-s-o-n TN just to the west of Nashville.
5″ total here in East Louisville (Eastwood)….3.5″ is new snowfall from tonight, with snow still falling. Crazy snowbanding. From underachieving, to overachiever, gotta love it.
Who would have thought???
Wacky world of Kentucky winters
4.25″ currently at my place.
4.5″
The 2018 spring tornado/severe wx season is just around the corner. Thus area NWS offices are gearing up to offer Skywarn training/retraining to new and veteran spotters. As highly useful as recent advances such as dual-polarization radar are, human eyes are still vital in giving a degree of quick “ground truth” to the NWS which can help save lives. Reporting tornadoes may be the first example many think of regarding storm spotters in action, but other threats can also be relayed such as flash floods, thunderstorms with severe hail/severe straight line winds, snow measurements and blizzard conditions (hear that, winter lovers?? 😉 .
Consider becoming a Skywarn spotter by checking with your NWS office for both online sessions and traditional c-l-a-s-s-r-o-o-m sessions. Here is an example of Skywarn training, in this case by NWS Paducah:
http://www.weather.gov/pah/spottertraining
Thank you for the info! I live on the other side of the state, but I would love to become a spotter.
Glad to help! NWS Jackson covers most of the eastern part of Kentucky. A few far eastern counties are the responsibility of NWS Charleston WV, and some northeastern counties are under the jurisdiction of NWS Wilmington OH.
Wilmington and Paducah have 2018 information up already, the other offices still have last year’s data up for the moment.

[you need to manually remove the dashes in the word c-l-a-s-s-e-s, the stupid KWC automod treats the word c-l-a-s-s-e-s as obscene and deletes the whole post]
Louisville added to Winter Storm Warning…it just won’t stop snowing!
Troy, Andy and other SE KY folks, I think our 2 year run at not getting more than an inch of snow from a system might rum out today:) Sure, things can get wrong, but through 4 AM this morning, the actual moisture inflow is increasing with plenty of lift with the front….looks good as it snails it’s way east!
Been watching the heaviest snow feeder bands splitting just as it reaches the Lexington area,…. unbelievable
Exactly! And they say there is no dome!
Hoping to get up to several inches of new snow on SE side of Lex. Maybe an inch plus – again. But hopefully it’s not over for us and we’ll get a heavier band to bust through the dome.
Regardless, the national radar is the strangest I can remember with that long snow band.
There is literally no such thing as a dome or fence.
Approaching 5″ of new snowfall in Eastwood, with close to 7″ of snow on the ground. Amazing to see the moderate to sometimes heavy band just not moving.
Not much near Iroquois Park at my house. Maybe an inch of new snow overnight.
Yeah some parts of Louisville will see a inch others parts will get close to 4 inches. That’s just the nature of the beast when it comes to where the actual snow bands setup. All in all this has been a fascinating clipper system, most always clipper systems are quick to move in and quick to move out. This clipper system literally just basically stalled out and will snow itself out over parts of Kentucky.
Definitely a overachiever for western and north central ky. Definitely both of the parkway’s (BG and WK parkways) will fair very well snow wise.
Yea, NWS verified 5 inches in Middletown/J-town/Mt. Washington areas. I just happened to be sitting under this crazy band for a good 6 hours. It had different levels of intensity, never breaking though. Still snowing as I’m typing this. I have 7 inches in my yard.
Yeah, 1.3″ overnight in Valley Station near Prairie Village. Add that to the 0.3″ during overnight yesterday, my total is 1.6″.
However, working at airport, it snowed heavily for a good 2 hours straight, then had rounds of light to moderate snow showers. I’m estimating they had twice the amount I got at home
Sorry Mike…you are no doubt in a dead spot for snow lol.
But on the bright side if MikeS combines the snow from yesterday/last night with the snow from Friday even Valley Station is around 4 inches total.
Very true! Well, it has officially stopped snowing here for the most part. A few lingering flurries. I can only imagine how much snow we could’ve had if the daytime snow could’ve accumulated. Still, biggest snow in 2 years here. 🙂
This has to be the most slow system ever!!!!!
Memphis airport now experiencing 30 minute delays due to the snow, radar shows heavier snow just to the west. Memphis is by far FedEx’s largest air hub and the main sort is during the overnight hours so it will be interesting to see how well (or otherwise) air cargo operations fair from this point.
Same can be said of UPS; Louisville is by far UPS’s biggest air hub.
I can’t recall a slower moving system than this one. Was projected to be in eastern KY before midnight last night and still has not made it. Hopefully it’s got some good precipitation with it.
Can’t believe how long it’s taking for this snow to move through. It should have been outta here a long time ago, but it’s still there!!
Here in far Western, ky yesterday they were on predicting 1-3 inches we end 4-5 inches. This was a very slow moving clipper that it practically stall over our area.. I can’t complain that we didn’t get snow this winter if my math is correct we’ve have gotten 9 inches so far this winter. Still got rest of this month and Feb,March to deal with .
It’s moving far slower than forecast. Will be lucky to reach Knoxville by lunchtime even though it should have been here by now. If this means it has a chance to drop more snow, I’m all for it!!
Thanks Chris for the update. Can’t tell how much snow has fallen in my area here in Taylor county. I turned on my flood light and it’s still snowing lightly. The ledge off my driveway looks to have about two inches not sure, will have to wait to it gets light. A fresh blanket of snow on top of the snow we had the other day is always beautiful. Everyone, enjoy the snow while we have it.
Something to keep in mind for areas in central and eastern ky…it started snowing here in Louisville around 2pm, but nothing started to accumulate until around 8pm. It was just too warm during the day, and melted on contact.
It’s 26 in Knox and ground temps are the same so far what little that has fallen has all stuck
Roughly right at 5″ here.
I’m in Shepherdsville KY, and I have hit 5-6 in. just on this slow moving clipper. I will definitely look at clippers differently now.
Good to see many of Mr Bailey’s weather weenies getting some appreciable snow from this event. Hopefully, Lexington and southeast get some too. Rodger in Dodger
Purt near 3″ in north Richmond.
Here in greenup, we have at least 2 new inches on the ground and this thing is just creeping
This has definitely made up for the pitiful underachiever that was Friday’s storm! I have about five inches at my place in Louisville (J-town/Taylorsville) including the inch we got the other night and it’s still snowing some flurries. It looks beautiful and it was my kind of dream to just lay up last night and watch the snow fall. It’s amazing how long it snowed yesterday and just didn’t accumulate, we really did luck out that this storm was such a show mover!
Still a few flurries flying outside. About 10 degrees with windchill about 3 below. Definitely an overachiever that left about 5-6″ on top of what we received.
Stay warm everyone!
FINALLY got to take the kids sledding yesterday. This is the first time since 2015 we’ve had enough snow to sled in the Cincy area. They had a blast. Now I’m okay with a big warm-up that will last until March. Bring on spring!
Fayette County now in WSW area. I have maybe 3 inches at my house on the SE side and it’s coming down at a pretty good clip. Was out earlier this morning and there are lots of slick spots on side streets and parking lots.
Heavy snow in Stearns ( Mccreary )
Anyone have a report on 80 from Somerset to 65 and 65 south from there? Supposed to be heading down to Orange Beach Al. and trying to decide which way to go. Thanks in advance.
Barely snowing in my part of Knott County. 29 degrees and just a trace on the ground.
Richmondo is WSW. I would like to know from Chris is if this really is a Clipper? It’s way to slow for a clipper?
Richmond WSW?
Sp..yes Richmond, Ky (Good ole Madison County)
4″+ in Bardstown.
I live 45 miles from work, in between Mt. Sterling and Morgan County, and I’m beginning to think that coming in today was a mistake. Good think there’s a Ramada within walking distance!
The roads will be slick for sure. Please stay safe–don’t hesitate to stay at the hotel if you need to, but hopeful you’ll be able to just take it slow going home and you’ll get there safe and sound 🙂
I have about an inch in Teays Valley WV. And it has already quit snowing about an hour ago. Congratulations to all the snow lovers in KY and OH for doing well in the last two systems. Greetings……from the land where snow comes to die….just east of the Ohio and Big Sandy Rivers.
Snowing heavily here in Taylor county hills. Just measured a little over seven inches of new snow on top of the two inches left over from the last snow the other day. Great snowstorm ! Have fun for though’s who are young enough to get out and play. Got to cancel my doctors appointment for tomorrow, no snow plows where I live. UGH !
I just went back and looked at the Euro one week ago to see what it showed for today. Remarkably, it had the system in almost the exact location (186 hours out!!), though it showed rain in the deep south instead of snow.
Bell is back down to 1 to 3 inches with nothing tonight according to National Weather Service. Does anybody see any hope for southeast Kentucky with this round of snow? I’m becoming very doubtful.
NWS Charleston WV blows it again: they just now, at 2:11pm, switch us from a Winter Weather Advisory to a WINTER STORM WARNING starting at 4:00pm this afternoon and ending at 10:00pm tonight! Can you *do* that?!!? Who issues a Winter Storm Warning for just 6 hours?!!? I made the mistake of planning my work day around their forecast and now I’m gonna be in a mess of a situation trying to get back home 🙁 Very frustrating, I really wish they would get their act together.
