Good Wednesday everyone. We have a weak cold front settling southward into the state today and this bad boy is likely to touch off some scattered storms. This boundary will also knock the temps down a degree or two for Thursday before the weather takes on a summer feel by the weekend. Speaking of Summer… I have a few thoughts ahead.
The day will start out with a mix of sun and clouds across most of the state. Winds will pick up as temps head into the mid and upper 70s for most. 80 degree temps will be possible for a few spots… especially in the south. A broken line of thunderstorms will be possible during the afternoon and evening as our front dips in.
Slightly cooler air then filters in for Thursday with temps in the low and middle 70s. Skies should be mainly sunny and this looks like one pretty weather day around here.
Warmer air scoots in here for Friday as thermometers make a run toward the low 80s. The 80s should be common over the weekend into early next week. We will ramp up the humidity levels and this means a scattered storm or two will be possible during this time. That’s what you get with a summer feeling pattern.
Some of the models try to take on a rather unsettled look as we go into early next week. The European Model is among them…
We will see how that works out, but a slightly stormier pattern could be the end result. Speaking of… it has been VERY quiet on the severe weather front over the past month or so.
A quick note about the summer ahead. We are coming out of a La Nina and face the possibility of the equatorial Pacific Ocean warming enough to be classified as a El Nino. Check out the forecast from the CFS…
The last time we switched from La Nina to El Nino was 2009 and that summer was a very cool one around here. Some of the other years featuring a similar switch: 1986, 1976, 1972, 1968, 1963 and 1957. None of those summers were scorching hot. 1976, 1972 and 1963 join 2009 as very cool ones across our part of the world. Will 2012 follow the same path? We will know in a couple of months.
Have a great Wednesday and take care.
Nothing can beat 2004’s summer. That was the coolest summer I have ever lived through.
Was 2004 the summer we never hit 90? My first summer in Kentucky was 1994 and I was amazed that there were days in July that didn’t hit 80. That never happened in Austin. Heck, once it was mid-March, 70’s for highs were a bonus.
I will be overjoyed if we have a cool summer. No high pressure sitting off the coast and keeping us hot and dry. That is my wish.
Yep, it was one that set records.
It was my first summer back in KY after living for 14 years in England – didn’t notice the change between the UK summer and the KY one!
Notice that Chris doesn’t use the word wet, just cool. Cool doesn’t always mean wet. 1986 and 1976 were dry across the state and 1963 was a very bad drought. This summer is starting with a nice little drought setting up from W. Ky down to Arkansas. Definitely a little different setup than 04 or 09. Also interesting to point out that 2009, 2004, and 1986 were all followed by droughts the next summer.
