Good evening, folks. Our winter weather system caused all kinds of travel issues earlier in the day, but now it’s full steam ahead toward much milder air. As the pattern turns milder, the potential is also there for quite a bit of rain rolling through before the cold can crash back in.
In terms of tonight, dense fog and black ice will be an issue for several areas. Keep that in mind if you’re going to be out travelling into early Saturday.
Saturday looks much better, but may be a slow starter in the north. Highs reach the low and middle 50s south, with middle 40s in the north.
Southwest winds will increase on Sunday, boosting temps toward 60 for many areas. This air is a sign of things to come as we star around 60 or better into the middle of next week. This setup will also come with a wet price, with showers returning as early as Monday.
From there, we will be seeing a boundary slowing down across our region, allowing waves of low pressure to develop along it. Exactly where that sets up remains to be seen. The new version of the GFS continues with a colder look, allowing for a quicker return of winter weather by the end of the week into the weekend…
The other models have slowed that down a little bit, allowing for a lot of rain to fall. The GFS rainfall through the next week…
The next two weeks total…
The average 2 week rain numbers from the 21 member GFS Ensembles…
I suspect all those numbers are way too high because the model is underestimating the strength of the cold pushing back into the country. Still, it’s a super active February through March taking shape. That will likely mean quite a bit more winter weather for our region.
Enjoy your evening and take care.
Reminds me of a stalled out boundary in mid summer.
Thanks Chris. Can’t say that I’ve been upset about our temps today. But I am still craving that elusive snowfall….. probs let eont get it but I’m still craving it. In the meantime I will take what we’ve got and find something good in it! Today we had sunshine and it got up to 49 at my house! Tomorrow is supposed to be nice as well. I’ll take it!
Well I can certainly believe those rain numbers. If the models hit on anything it would be rain.
Seems our big snow chances might be done this winter. Ankle biter or bust!
Rain train always wins a couple days ago it looked like winter would return I quote arctic air was gonna crash back in now it looks like mild and rain and marginal cold the models are always right on that except in summer when you need rain I’ve quit paying attention to the models they are a joke I enjoy the blog but hardly anything this year has panned out except for the rain
I guess “That will likely mean quite a bit more winter weather for our region” applies to Northern Ky or somewhere else besides EKY..Winter has yet to show up in these parts unless you want to count a few coatings..Even the polar vortex just laugh at us..Must of been the evil twin sister when it split and decided to laugh some more at our expense..Hope i never hear the term “Splitting of the Polar Vortex” again because i believe that’s what messed up this winter..Oh well it is what it is..
Oh goodie….the plague returns with a vengeance!
Good thing….I was starting to miss the eternal mud and so has my dog.
You know what’s the most consistent aspect of weather around here? The complaining.
Yea I miss the complaining from the complainers who complain about the complainers who complain about no smow..Just a weather blog..Everyone should have a right to vent there frustration about how horrible this winter has been.
I am not complaining, I am looking forward to the upcoming rain.
You know why? Because it will wash off all the brine on my vehicle.
Rain, rain, and more rain the theme of 2018 and now 2019. Sad to be in February and posting total amounts of rainfall for the week. Where has winter gone?
Rain Train 3….Winter…0 RIP Winter…
The Three Kings of No Snow:
1) King Virga
2) King Cold Rain
3) King Too Warm
All three Kings of No Snow commonly visit SE KY each winter; however, this winter, The Three Kings of No Snow have visited and refused to leave with much stricter, tyranny than usual!
Terrible winter with the no snow tyrants ruling the kingdom….blah, blah, blah!
I suspect that half of them 8 inches come in the form of snow! Now wouldn’t that be something.
At this time of year with the daily high temps climbing and days getting notably longer, much colder or artic air is a relative term. As each day or in this latest warmups case a week, it gets harder and harder to get decent snow. And in a terrible snow year like this is losing another week to a warm wave and rain is almost a death blow for our snow chances.
Looks as if we’re going to loose at least 2 weeks up front. There’s nothing even remotely winter looking in sight through Valentines day (probably very little thereafter).
Agreed.
SE KY can’t even get any of that freezing fog
As much as I hate to hear constant negativity in terms of this blog, I find it very telling that so many people are on here complaining about the lack of a big snow and we still haven’t gotten one yet.
It almost makes you want to give up on the idea, doesn’t it?
