Good afternoon, everyone. As expected, many areas woke up to quite a bit of snow across central and eastern Kentucky, but that snow is quickly going bye bye as temps warm. This warming trend will carry us into Saturday as severe thunderstorms become a possibility.
Let me begin with what’s going on out there today. Mainly showers are left, but this action will be winding down from west to east…
Temps climb quickly on Saturday and should reach the 60s. The severe weather signal I started highlighting last weekend, continues to show up well. Watch the waves of showers and thunderstorms rolling across the state on the Hi-Res NAM…
The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded western Kentucky to the Enhanced Risk for severe storms…
Damaging winds, tornadoes and large hail will all be possible. I do think the threat exists into areas of central Kentucky during the evening hours.
Torrential rains will also accompany these storms and could put down enough rain to cause flash flooding issues to develop.
High winds are going to be a major player. Gusts of 50-60mph will be possible, even without thunderstorms…
Another strong to severe storm maker moves in by the middle of next week. Temps ahead of this may reach 70 degrees, but it’s another surge of false spring as winter temps come back in behind it and may hang tough through the rest of March…
#teampspring ain’t happy!
Enjoy the rest of your day and take care.
The good thing is that we are getting to the point in the year where below normal temps are going to be tolerable. Average highs start nearing 60 down here in the southern part of the state and if the cold spell puts us anywhere in the 50s I would be happy with that. Hopefully it’s we get some dry weather with that below average. Spring is coming.
Thanks Chris. No #team spring certainly does NOT like what you are saying! Storms tomorrow do not thrill me either. But such seems to be the way our weather is anymore.
“Winter hangs tough through the rest of March.” No!!!!??? Say it isn’t so!!!!! Ugh!!!! Go away, old man winter!!!!
Ha! Old Man Winter hardly made any appearance this year.
Don’t worry Ray, any model (especially from a week+ out) showing any sort of prolonged cold for Kentucky has little chance of coming to fruition as we should have learned time and time again this winter.
That Hi-Res NAM acts like that we get most of the Thunderstorm action… Im not ready to bite on that yet. The SPC isn’t biting.
