Good Thursday to one and all. We are coming off a very wicked Wednesday across the state as many areas were rocked by severe thunderstorms. Large hail and damaging winds were common as the day served as a buffer between the 80 degree air of recent days and the cold pattern now taking control of our weather.

It is this cold pattern that will steal the show over the next few weeks as Old Man Winter refuses to go quietly into the night. As a matter of fact… it appears he may have some late season tricks up his sleeve for much of the eastern half of the country and that should include our region as well.

Let’s start with the shock to the system that is today’s weather. It will be a blustery and cold day as temps struggle into the low and mid 40s for afternoon high temps. Gusty winds will make it feel even colder. Some leftover showers will be with us and some of these may mix with some wet snowflakes at times… especially early today.

You can track today’s ugly stuff here…

Current Temps

Friday will be another chilly day with highs generally in the 40s. A weak system will dive in from the northwest bringing the chance for some very chilly showers across the west and south.

That brings us to the weekend and a little system catching my attention. Weak low pressure is expected to develop across the plains and slide eastward across the Tennessee Valley late Saturday into Sunday. This low will take a track that should bring rain and snow to the Ohio Valley. It appears  the best chance of seeing some slushy snow out of this would be across the northern parts of the state Saturday night and Sunday.

Look at what the NAM is doing with this in terms of precipitation…

If the low does indeed take the Tennessee track… a swath of accumulating slushy snow would be possible across our region.

If that’s not enough… odds favor a similar system rolling in by later Monday into Tuesday with another round of rain and possible snow. Look… I love snow and winter in general… just NOT IN SPRING! This is not a forecast I am happy about… but it is what it is.

Speaking of not being happy… spring lovers are going to be on edge into early April as this colder than normal pattern hangs tough. Look at the temp departures from the GFS Ensembles…

In addition to the nasty conditions that may feature some flakes… green thumbs need to keep an eye on thermometers. Several mornings may feature lows down in the 20s over the next few weeks and the first morning to do that may come tomorrow.

I hope I haven’t depressed you with this ugly forecast. Have a great Thursday and take care.
