Good Wednesday, everyone. It’s another absolutely frigid day in the bluegrass state, but the numbers look to moderate a bit in the coming days. It’s still skewed colder than normal, just not the brutal stuff of the last few days. As we look down the weather road for the rest of November, things could get interesting again.
Today is historic in terms of cold. This is likely the coldest morning ever recorded this early in the season. Wow! Add this to the long list of extreme events we’ve seen in recent months and years. Mother Nature no longer does anything on a small level.
After the current arctic cold pushes east, temps moderate but are still skewing colder than normal for the rest of the week.
The overall pattern looks very blocky with systems cutting off across the eastern part of the country this weekend into early next week. Can we get some kind of merger to take place? That’s something we need to be on guard for. Check out the Canadian upper levels to see what I’m talking about…
That would form one heck of a storm along the east coast with the potential for another system to pop in our region by early next week…
The Canadian brings a little rain and snow to the area by Monday and Tuesday. The ICON has a similar evolution…
The Canadian then digs another deep system into the east later next week…
With so many systems on the map, look for some fairly wide model swings in the coming days.
I’ll have updates later today, so check back. Have a good one and take care.
Thanks, Chris!
Here are some interesting tid bits from NWS Nashville. 0.4 inch of snow was officially measured in Nashville. This is only the seventh time that snowfall more than a trace has occurred on or before November 11 (including at least one October measurable snow). This averages out to one measurable snow (on or before Nov 11) every 19.3 years in 135 years of records.
BTW, currently 16 in Nashville. 12 in nearby D-i-c-k-s-o-n TN. The Kentucky Mesonet shows a few single digits.
Now, the Mesonet shows several single digits with Henderson beating out Harlan, near 0!!!!
Interesting trend I have noticed since observing the Mesonet over the years is this: During the extreme arctic blasts each year and often the ANNUAL MINIMUM LOWS, I keep noticing the minimum lows, with the exception of the outlier (Harlan’s Mesonet at over 4,000 ft up) , are in the western half of KY and far northern KY while SE and south central KY generally is much warmer. Mesonets like Letcher and Knox that show valley reading close to where most live at in SE KY seem warmer during most of the arctic air outbreaks for minimum lows, yet, climatology says Western KY’s minimum lows are suppose to be the warmest in the state while SE KY is the coldest, even garden zone maps show this. Interesting though that minimum lows each year are not occurring in the east when you take out the Harlan mesonet. I think there was a few negative single digits minimum lows last year, all out in western and northern mesonet locations. This long winded post is just a pre-dawn, random babbling of my observation that suggest weather data is constantly skewed by elevation out my way in SE KY which leads to my theory as to why I think SE KY struggles with getting more snow and colder temps consistently forecasted by the models than most rarely sees here:)
Do not need all this cold weather. Heating bills are going to rise and that not a good thing if it’s coming out of your pocket. For years I burned wood in a wood burner. But if you heat that way you have quite a bit of dust to contend with. I like to see a little snow but not the real cold temperatures. Well you know what they say you can always move. Not quite that easy. It all takes money now days and everyone is out there to take it from you. Uncle Sam is not the best uncle to have sometimes. Enjoy your cold morning. Hope it’s the last for awhile.
We get we get and adapt the best we can. Wishing you good luck this winter.
Thanks. I was raised in the hills of Southern Ohio. Not as big of hills as Kentucky or West Virginia. I loved any type of weather except when the sun was out weeks on end. I always loved the hills. And always will. Appalachia is my home. We area different kind people. Not all the same but we are different than flatlanders. I hope everybody get the weather they like to see. Weather watchers have a good day.
Have we possibly set a state record for coldest early season lows in KY.?! Mesonet has Henderson at 1 degree with NWS showing numerous single digit lows, especially in north central and west KY. I hope we set a record, might as well when miserabley cold, right? From 97 degrees less than 6 weeks ago for hottest October record to near state record cold in November. Insane!
9 degrees was my low temperature in my backyard with still snow on the ground. Today I turned 68 years old and this is the first snow I’ve seen on the ground on my birthday. A gift from Mother Nature.
Happy birthday..
Happy 68 b.day Yo know what next year b.day means. LOL
Do tell, whats it mean?
Hahaha I chuckled on that one
Wow… I would have figured that the chances of the No. 1-ranked Kentucky basketball team losing – at home – to unranked, unheralded Evansville would have been even less than the chances of all this record-breaking cold and measurable snow so early in the season!
Meh. The Cats may be as hard to forecast this season as snow.
……..What day did CB post his winter outlook?
Come on MAN. You have been around long enough to know that he hasn’t.
Congrats to all of you that got your snow.
Bowling Green has now recorded its 10th snowiest Autumn (1.3″)
You didn’t get snow in Valley Station?
