Good Thursday, everyone. We are rolling toward the weekend with another potent storm system on the way. That’s going to be another big wind maker that produces more rain, but this one has a big change behind it. Arctic air is on the way from Sunday through early next week.
Temps out there today are pretty chilly compared to where we have been. Highs range from the upper 30s to middle 40s with a mix of sun and clouds.
Clouds will increase for Friday as the cold hangs around. The numbers will climb overnight as showers move in. There’s still the chance for a mix in the north, but that’s not very impressive. As the storm system works in here on Saturday, showers are likely with a rumble of thunder. Temps spike into the 50s then crash into the 20s late in the evening. There could be a snowflake or two showing up…
Winds are going to be a major player again on Saturday as gusts hit 50mph or a little greater…

Things get really cold behind this system from Sunday through Tuesday. Check out the numbers…
Highs will be below freezing with lows that can flirt with 10 degrees. Wind chills will be even colder during this time.
If you’re looking for some snow, watch an upper level disturbance moving in from the northwest early in the week. That’s your best chance to see some flakes.
The cold eases late next week, but will try to lock in for the long haul soon after.

On a “teasing note,” there are signs that the PV may try and break down soon…..but, then who gets the cold if that happens. Certainly, we need the oscillations to reconfigure for the east to get the cold in February IF the PV breaks down. That may be why Chris suddenly changed his mind about the cold air locking in? I am not convinced yet but hope is all we have at this point.
This is the lamest winter of my 52 years on this rock.
I have never in my 68 years have had the heat off at anytime during the month of January. Not complaining, as my heating bill will be the lowest this month since I moved to Kentucky twelve years ago. We may not have any snow to shovel but will be richer LOL.
Speak for yourself….I have 5000lbs of salt sitting and waiting. The good thing is that I dont depend on the snow, but when it does snow I am making $$$’s. My wife did say the other day that she had a little extra money for herself do to out electric bill not being so high.
You may have a long wait on using all that salt as it is predicted to be dry and cold all next week. I think that is best as this shallow Arctic air coming won’t have any over running moisture to produce an Ice Storm. Bad news, our heating bills will be higher. Just can’t win for losing when it comes to our weather. #teamspring

Temps here Re starting out at almost 50 here this morning
I looked at both Jackson and London data last night for January month-to-date, granted not as many years of data as Lexington, Louisville and other bigger towns in KY, but we are way ahead of the previous warmest January on record for both locations, even above average for a normal March! I guess next week may be enough to prevent warmest month on record but still likely a top contender yet as we are in the upper 40s on the monthly average, half way through the month.
I heard on the news last evening that the last decade was the warmest globally since scientist have been keeping records. Haven’t they been saying that at the end of every decade ? Big Joke on us who want to know the truth about our climate in my opinion.
Hey its the climate change denier who doesn’t understand data! If they’ve been saying it’s the warmest decade each previous decade (which is true) you know what this means? The climate is getting progressively warmer. Hm a trend in climate getting warmer. A change in climate, as you yourself just said. Well that sounds like climate change to me!
Fact, it takes 1000’s of decades for climate to change. We will have up and down Winters through the period. Another fact to prove this is the water level in the Oceans are not rising, and that’s all I have to say about climate change.
That is not a fact and the oceans are indeed rising……just ask any resident in Miami/Dade Co. Florida.
Well, then I was incorrect. No snowstorms for all snow lovers ever again. I guess all we can look forward to is hot, humid year round. Sounds like Hell to me.
My county of Taylor is too far west in the state of Kentucky to get any measurable snow from Alberta Clippers and also snow off of Lake Michigan.
A positive AO forecast for late January going into February all that favors is a mild pattern there’s no evidence of any snowfall in the foreseeable future. No snow for December is turning into no snow for January it’s definitely not looking good for the start of February. That hang in there snow lovers mentality that’s pretty much worn out it’s welcome. I’ve said it before I’ll say it again I’m no fan of winter I prefer the summer months. However I do feel for the snow lovers this weather pattern is nothing short of dreadful.

It’s a easy call, I typed it over a week ago. It will get cold for a few days, but warm back up with a Low bringing rain, then low goes by with backside flurries for 15 minutes, and colder again(30’s)…then repeat.
Lexington average temperature through the first 15 days of January is 47.5. That would be above average in Dallas-Fort Worth.
So in other words we have been experiencing a Texas Winter so far.
In Kentucky sometimes you get very little snow in the winter but you could count on clipper systems to give you an inch or two here and there but we can’t even get them now. This is fastly becoming the new normal winter around here.How sad.
After three years of non Winters. I will have to conclude that Winter weather snowstorms has move well to our north. Will it return, the answer is YES ! It’s a back and forth motion. We have been experiencing the kind of Winters they would have in central and northern Mississippi. Maybe next Winter the weather pattern will change with the AO and NAO in the negative phase and with an active subtropical jet, or it may be latter in the decade. No one knows how all this will play out as we go forward in time.
In the extended outlook, Euro shows more normal to above normal readings than below normal.
Nevertheless, NAO and AO values are looking better for the last full week of January, if you like cold and possible snow.
