Good Saturday everyone. We have a very busy holiday weekend upon us as the remnants of Hurricane Isaac take control of the weather across the commonwealth. This means the tropics have come to Kentucky and this will be complete with soaking rains from showers and thunderstorms. There is the potential for some areas to pick up a bit too much rain between now and Labor Day.

The leftovers of Isaac have drenched the drought stricken areas just to our west since Friday. The storm will now slowly work eastward across the Lower Ohio Valley and this will really increase our rains over the next few days. The GFS Ensembles bring the core of the system almost due eastward into Kentucky on Sunday…

That setup will bring waves of showers and storms across the state today with an increase in the action Sunday into Sunday night. I can’t rule out some strong storms… especially central and west. There is so much deep tropical moisture in the air that torrential rainfall is a good bet with many of these showers and storms. The threat for localized flash flooding will be with us through Monday.

I still expect widespread one to four inch rain totals through Monday night, with locally higher amounts for areas getting in on repeat thunderstorms.

Next week as a whole looks to continue to be an active one. Lingering tropical moisture should keep a couple of boomers around for Tuesday and then a cold front swings in by late Wednesday and Thursday. That may bring another round of thunderstorms. Keep an eye on next weekend as the pattern is favorable for a cut off low to form somewhere across the Ohio Valley. That would bring more rain chances and much cooler temps.

Speaking of cooler… don’t be surprised if there isn’t a VERY chilly shot of air toward the middle and end of September.

Let’s get back to tracking today’s tropical showers and storms…

Be sure to hit the radar tab at the top of the page and use First Alert Defender to track the action all the way into where you live.

I will update as needed. Have a great Saturday and take care.
