Good Saturday everyone. We have a very busy holiday weekend upon us as the remnants of Hurricane Isaac take control of the weather across the commonwealth. This means the tropics have come to Kentucky and this will be complete with soaking rains from showers and thunderstorms. There is the potential for some areas to pick up a bit too much rain between now and Labor Day.
The leftovers of Isaac have drenched the drought stricken areas just to our west since Friday. The storm will now slowly work eastward across the Lower Ohio Valley and this will really increase our rains over the next few days. The GFS Ensembles bring the core of the system almost due eastward into Kentucky on Sunday…
That setup will bring waves of showers and storms across the state today with an increase in the action Sunday into Sunday night. I can’t rule out some strong storms… especially central and west. There is so much deep tropical moisture in the air that torrential rainfall is a good bet with many of these showers and storms. The threat for localized flash flooding will be with us through Monday.
I still expect widespread one to four inch rain totals through Monday night, with locally higher amounts for areas getting in on repeat thunderstorms.
Next week as a whole looks to continue to be an active one. Lingering tropical moisture should keep a couple of boomers around for Tuesday and then a cold front swings in by late Wednesday and Thursday. That may bring another round of thunderstorms. Keep an eye on next weekend as the pattern is favorable for a cut off low to form somewhere across the Ohio Valley. That would bring more rain chances and much cooler temps.
Speaking of cooler… don’t be surprised if there isn’t a VERY chilly shot of air toward the middle and end of September.
Let’s get back to tracking today’s tropical showers and storms…

Be sure to hit the radar tab at the top of the page and use First Alert Defender to track the action all the way into where you live.
I will update as needed. Have a great Saturday and take care.
It has felt like there is a dome over hopkinsville this year …. Hope this rain actually finds its way here thanks for all your hard work Sir .. My fingers are crossed 🙂
Thanks, Chris. Hoping to get through the football game at Lindsey Wilson this afternoon before it gets stormy. First home game of the season, with a son in law who is one of the coaches, well, you know, gotta go and support my family! Will have you on hand for twitter and the defender on the trusty Iphone though! 😉 Have a safe and happy Saturday, everyone!
when are the rains expected to start in the Ashland/Flatwoods area! Husband and son are out bush hogging today, would like for them to get back in before it hits.
this is the slowest moving tropical system Ive ever seen. Thought some moisture would be here yesterday and looks like it will be into Sunday before any real precip is falling??
The NWS is not as optimistic as Chris on this weekends rain, they are now saying 1 maybe 2 in. Rains, 1-3 north and west of central KY??
I’ll take the under on forecasted rain totals. It’s too far north and has been way underperforming since leaving Louisiana. I hope I’m wrong on this but I like my odds.
Look for the blessings in the dry weather; haven’t mowed in Lawrenceburg since August 19! And it looks like the KY river still has plenty of water in it!
Keep on the sunny side of life. If the rain comes, welcome it; if it doesn’t make the best of it.
The sunny side of life doesn’t help my trees
The bright spot is my lawn mower has had a restfull summer, rain band forming south of Louisville, this looks to miss most of central KY, also rain band in east ky, that has pretty much been the story for Frankfort area this summer!
Maybe
that ban forming near bowling green will make it to our area Todd
If that holds together some folks in Central KY should get rain, hopefully this tropical rain has enough juice that it won’t fade when it comes this way??
I’ll shut up now as we just got absolutely dumped on.
Looking at the 3 p.m. radar, it seems to be raining all around central Kentucky but I have yet to see one drop at my house. Is that system going to move our way? It seems too far north at this point.
If this misses Shelbyville I’m gonna throw a temper tantrum.
Dry as a bone in Perry Co.. an occasional sprinkle from the sky.
Seems we will get the low end of the totals.
This reminds me of many of our infamous snows that “were on their way”.
Their has been a 60percent chance of rain in Frankfort today and the sun has been out all day, the rain in Louisville area is fading not making much progress east, If Frankfort gets 1 in. By Tuesday I’ll be very surprized!
Folks,
It’s just the Dome getting ready for this winter!
we have had abt 1/2 inch of rain so far just out of Flatwoods, still dark and hear some thunder,
How did the moisture go around central ky? Look at the latest regional radar, heavy rains in ohio, Wvirgina, dry in most of cKY, the rain around bowling green is headed for south east Ky, we just can’t catch a break in my part of the world? ( I mean rainless part of the world)
DOME!
I threw a temper tantrum. Just so you know.
Waiting, waiting, being patient, waiting, my trees are becoming firewood, waiting, waiting….this is getting ridiculous…where is the moisture?
Gosh, that HPC forecast for 5-7″ of rain was WAY off, huh? 🙂 I had a feeling it would be.
Yeah, either CB has not been reviewing the results so far, or it all shifted out at least a day.
Perhaps CB should have been more specific what areas of Kentucky, since a huge portion has been missed so far.
Verga? 😉
Guess we should have grilled out today???? Thought the whole weekend was a wash…
Come on guys with the woe is me……..the low is moving slowly but deliberately towards KY. Call me out this time tomorrow if we haven’t received MORE than our fair share of the wet stuff. Patience is a virtue.
