Good Friday everyone and welcome to a stormy start to the weekend. A strong cold front will enter the weather picture this evening into the overnight and will produce the chance for severe thunderstorms across Kentucky. A nice blast of cool air then slides in for the rest of the weekend.
Here’s how things may play out…
– A scattered thunderstorm can’t be ruled out at any point today with an increase in action by late afternoon.
– A squall line of storms will develop along and ahead of the cold front as it works closer to the state. This line will impact western Kentucky by late afternoon and early evening. Central Kentucky by mid to late evening and then into eastern Kentucky overnight.
– Damaging winds will be possible along this line with an isolated tornado possible. The severe threat should diminish the farther east the line gets.
– These storms will be accompanied by tremendous lightning and torrential rain. The heavy rain may be enough to cause flash flooding for some… especially in the central and west.
– Showers and storms will slowly work out of the state by mid to late afternoon Saturday. Much cooler air then works in for the rest of the weekend.
I will have updates as needed and will send out quick updates via twitter: @kentuckyweather . You can follow the storm threat with your daily dose of tracking tools:

Have a great Friday and take care.
To follow up on comments from last post. I noticed that the timing is going to be later, which would make it less likely……..but what about the last event? The timing was late afternoon and NOT midnight or after, and even STILL, the line of storms diminished in intensity a lot – at 5pm! There were areas within the line that had some action, but at least here it was just a heavy shower with a little thunder.
Here in Nicholasville we were blasted, very heavy rain with strong winds. Some trees blown over and all the Herbies were blown over all over my neighborhood in northern Jessamine Co. I for one think it’s impossible to predict the day before when storms will affect our area when they haven’t even fired up yet.
That explains the funnel cloud in Corbin 2 nites ago because the storms had diminished and it was 7:40
Chris, sounds like you had better take a nap! you might have a very busy evening and night. All I can say is I hope we get beneficial rains, but no tornadoes! Have a GREAT Friday, everyone.
This is in Indiana not Kentucky, but thanks to Issac last week 39% of the state of Indiana was in Extreme or Exceptional drought per the US Drought Monitor. This week it is zero percent. Tonight’s system should help keep it that way for a little while longer.
Issac helped some for Kentucky but not nearly as much.
Models still indicating we stay dry until the wee hours Saturday morning.
But the radar seems to be lighting up just to our NW. I’m guessing that isn’t the actual front….since there is another line back in Wisc., Iowa, and Nebraska. Can’t tll if that 1st blob will skirt us to the north or not.
looks like 1st blob will stay north.
will this system give us any problems here in the Ashland/Flatwoods area tonight and tom. the storms that came thru a cpl days ago went around us and we got nothing. i am having a rummage sale today and tom. was wondering if i need to worry abt my stuff getting blown away tonight! lol
Looks like the worst of the storms will be southern Indiana and maybe the Louisville area around midnite, hopefully just a heavy rain and lightning event for central and eastern ky after midnite? The few big storms Frankfort area has had lately has taken out some of our biggest trees, wind I can do without!
Cross country race for the kids @ 9am tomorrow in London…opinion on weather situation then please…
I am not a meterologist and don’t claim to be but, London area could still have some heavy rain and lightning around until mid day or so, take with a grain of salt?
