Good afternoon, everyone. Snow squalls and areas of light snow continue to cause travel issues across parts of the state and we have more to come. Additional rounds of snow are on the way from this evening through Sunday and Monday.
Folks, I’m going to rant here and I’m going to try to stay as professional as possible. The fact the NWS in Jackson did not issue a Winter Weather Advisory ahead of last night’s snow is inexcusable. As someone who grew up in their region, it makes me angry this continues to happen. More than 2″ of snow fell by this morning in several parts of their forecast area. We had numerous roads covered in snow. They finally issued a WWA for their far southeastern counties, leaving everyone else out, even though the entire region was getting snow. Multiple accidents have been reported in areas without this advisory, including a 50 car pileup with injuries along Interstate 75. Reports suggest this occurred during one of the blinding snow squalls.
No, A Winter Weather Advisory isn’t going to stop accidents from happening. But it does get the message out to the masses and if it prevents just one accident, it’s more than worth it.
As I’ve said many times before, WKYT paid a lot of money through the years on weather research in our region. The research shows people only respond to headlines… Period. Special Weather Statements are a gigantic waste of time because they don’t reach the masses.
On that note, blanket the region with a Winter Weather Advisory through early Monday because it’s the right thing to do.
Ok, rant over. 😁
As I mentioned, additional rounds of light snow and snow squalls will be common from this evening through early Monday. Given what I’m seeing, I decided to go ahead and put out a First Call For Additional Snowfall…
Here’s a look at the additional snows coming from the models:
The GFS has done very well, so far and seems to have a good handle on what’s to come…
Here’s the Canadian…
The NAM
The Hi Res NAM was underdone with last night’s snow and is playing catch up…
The EURO did the worst by far with last night’s snow. It cannot get the low level temps right to save its life. The model bias of being way too warm shows no signs of letting up. Still, it shows additional snows…
The GFS Ensembles have done very good and continue to have a good handle on things…
Remember, that’s an average of 21 different members.
The pattern after this features cold air continuing to press from the north, leading to a west-east storm track starting Tuesday through the end of the week…
GFS
EURO
I will have another update later this evening. Until then, here are your radars to track the current action and the new rounds coming in from the northwest…
Enjoy the day and take care.
I am in total agreement with you on the Advisories, Chris. When I got up this morning(I was able to sleep in a LOT thanks to a VERY TIRED Lab puppy-I did my best last evening to WEAR HIM DOWN! 🙂 ) we had around an inch in my area of Bardstown, roads slightly wet. However, around 11am or so, I saw where the Nelson Co. Sheriff’s Dept. was asking folks to stay off the Bluegrass Pkwy. due to a LOT of slide-off’s and accidents, both between here and Lex. and Boston, Ky. Our temp right now is the same as it was this morning, maybe a 2-4° variation -it’s 35° now, but our deck is as slick as snot even with the snow melt. Pepper, the big ol’ Lab pup, is going nuts out there sliding around on it!!!! He doesn’t know what to DO!!!!!??? 😀 But the snow brought out an abundance of big beautiful Cardinals, Red-Bellied and Downy woodpeckers, and this little gray bird that hangs upside down from the feeder and the shepherd’s hooks…our snow is almost gone, so let’s have some MORE! 🙂
The NWS Jackson always has been and will always be a complete and total joke
Off and on Snow Showers have been occurring in the last hour. Hope we get another inch of that pretty wet Snow tonight.
I agree with you Chris 100% on NWS not giving out more widespread Winter Weather Advisories last evening and tonight.
The Chicago area received around an inch of snow early Saturday morning, but temps rose to the mid 30s during the day and melted most of what fell.
Friday afternoon we had a brief heavy snow squall for about 20 minutes that cut visibility to under a quarter-mile. If it had continued snowing like that for three hours, we would have had six inches of snow easily, but of course it stopped after 20 minutes and melted shortly thereafter.
Chicago’s O’Hare Airport is now up to around six inches of snow for the season, while the NWS office in the SW suburbs has had a little more, around nine inches of snow.
I see that a Special Weather Statement has been issued by the NWS offices in Kentucky for the light snow tonight and tomorrow. They’re just calling for light snow accumulations of an inch or less through Sunday afternoon (with the caveat that there could be localized greater accumulations where there are heavier snow showers), with minimal travel impacts.
Hopefully there won’t be any 50-car pileups… my goodness! There definitely should have been a WWA in those conditions.
WKY snow drought continues…
