Good evening, everyone. Showers and thunderstorms continue to work across the region, adding to our already record setting rain day. As we look ahead, the focus is on a snow maker blowing through the region Wednesday into Wednesday night.
Before we get to that, let’s talk about the additional showers and storms rumbling through this evening. This action can is adding to the general 1″-4″ of rain that’s already fallen, so watch for additional flooding and a few storms may still be strong. Here are your radars…
As far as our mid-week snow system, this is a fast-mover but is likely to put snow on the ground for many. The future radar from the Hi Res NAM shows this system zipping across the state and becoming a little more pronounced across central and eastern Kentucky…
Here’s the snow map from that run…
The GFS is a little more generous…
The Short Range Canadian…
The EURO…
The average of the 21 member GFS Ensembles…
So you can see how the models agree on a 1″-3″ snowfall, but differ on the placement. I’m shocked, I tell ya!! š
The weekend/early next week setup continues to look interesting. This looks like a messy system that can begin with a wintry mix and snow before changing to some rain. As this system wraps up to our east, a true northwest flow looks to develop behind this from Sunday night through Tuesday. That gets help from the Great Lakes and is likely to put snow down across central and eastern Kentucky.
I will have an update on WKYT tonight at 11 and, of course, with a full post later tonight. Have a good one and take care.

How come my comments won’t show up?
Thunder, lightning flashes, and some hailstones in Perry County on this January night. Strange times.
A large area of light to moderate snow is falling over Northern IL extending all the way west to Iowa. The predicted overall totals have trended downward, but are still pretty respectable. The SW suburbs of Chicago are predicted to get 4-5 inches by Tuesday afternoon, while areas from Chicago northward to the Wisconsin state line are predicted to receive 7-9 inches, with some lake enhancement there.
I hope your snowstorm is an overachiever for the Chicagoland area.
Here in the KY hills we are hearing *extremely* heavy rain on the roof, thunder, and a few hailstones bouncing off the window for good measure. Iām old enough to remember when thunderstorms in January were exceedingly rare, almost unheard of.
We may get some snow by midweek, so I have my fingers crossed for that.
Best wishes from Kentucky. āļøāļøāļøāļøāļøāļø
weird when more likely to get severe weather in the winter than in the spring/summer. The past few years has been pretty thunderstorm(less) for my area.
Seems as each week passes, less likely for a big snow and more likely for the usual fence action (mix). Not seeing all that cold air that was expected either. Cold air blocking says, I’ll stay up north, thank you. Well, at least we have nowhere to go but up. Already got more snow than all of last year with that 2″ very nice Christmas snow. I’ll take that any day over a big snow later.
