Good Thursday evening. My thoughts from earlier remain unchanged as we track a squall line of snow into the state this evening. This will cause some significant travel issues into the overnight hours as whiteout conditions develop for a time.
Here’s the latest on this quick hitter:
Β Some other thoughts:
– Arctic air sends our temps close to 10 degrees early Friday morning. Gusty winds will make it feel 0 to -10. Highs Friday will range from the upper teens to low 20s.
– Snow chances for the weekend are increasing as two systems dive in from the northwest. Several inches will be possible for parts of central and eastern Kentucky.
Have a great evening and take care.
Possible snow day in Mason? I need a day off!!
Thanks, Chris. Hope we get to see something here in the southern tropics of Jy!
Uh, meant KY.
Snow blowing horizontal in London. CB was right when he said you probably won’t be able to measure this one too well.
Why is Ashland still not in the adv?
A little dry slot between Frankfort and Louisville, hopefully it fills in soon?
The small amount of precipitation will be out of here before this dry slot gets moist enough to actually snow. As always, I’ll take the under on the snowfall forecast.
The radar still looks decent in southern Indiana so I’m not ready to throw in the towel as of yet, I guess time will tell!
Yeah, that dry slot between Frankfort and Louisville is called Shelbyville.
Several inches??????
Maybe in a parallel universe but not in the one we live in.
That’s what I was thinking. I need specifics here…but that’s the kind of person I am. Nothing on CB…He rocks! Woulda liked a snow map that’s all π
The radar isn’t looking very impressive.
Give it time, it is filling in. If you looked at it 3 hours ago there was nothing there, in theory of course. Meaning, there was something there..just not much.
If I had a dollar every time I heard that, I would have enough $ for some fine dining. π
Coming down very strong in Owensboro at 7:35 est
It looks like Ky has out source its weather to Canada. We sure cannot manufacture snow here without the help from a cheap clipper system.
Snow on the north east side of New circle
Thanks, Chris. Let it snow….
“a swath of light snow to the region.” Let’s delve a little “deeper” into the swath phenomenon.
SWATH-noun
1. A row or line of grass, grain, or other crop as it lies when mown or reaped.
2. A strip left clear by the passage of a mowing machine or scythe.
So swath IS acceptable to use since this winter’s swath forecasts have left our lawns green. π
Still have shiny new snowboards… π
Look at that heavy snow straddling the KY/TN border.. Whoever gets in on that is going to have a few hours worth of fun.
I never try to be a debbie downer when it comes to snow…never. But it’s literally 40 degrees in southern Kentucky right now? Why isn’t everyone talked about the warm temperatures with this snowfall? 34 still where I live near Frankfort. Don’t see a lot sticking at 34 degrees.
It snowed 4 inches a few weeks ago above freezing the entire event. That’s in Lexington- it’s possible. Plus this is carrying cold air with it. May the best man recieve more than a trace!
Yep and just literally a few miles south, NUTTIN’ but salt and dry roads. Word.
So you have not experience the might of the Arctic Blast?!

yep S/SE KY will get 2 hours or so HEAVY SQUALLS, look at the tail baCKSIDE main batch it starting to level outr, so as it moves thru be a bit of TRAINING of the HEAVY BATCH.
like what im seeing for 2-3 inches to fall in a QUICK period.
I think you are on it tonight, east and south east ky could see 4 inches in some areas with a little upslope added!
yep Todd it will ENHANCE as it moves in!!! agree
The snow dome donut over Frankfort is just nuts right now, go away DOME A@@s
It is the hardest I’ve seen it snow in Louisville this winter. Nice to see it. Too bad it will be gone in an hour.
I wish we could get NEKY out of the Charleston NWS coverage area. It is so old how they do these four counties.
agree 100 % they dont put out adv until it is to late!!!!
midnight and they put us under the adv, and it has been bad for awhile, alittle late!!!!!!!!! Like usual for our area!!!!!!!
Very light flurries in Frankfort, the radar and precip not matching up good at the moment, VIRGA Ugg?
I think I dated her once….
Me two Bubba. She liked it 2-3″ at a time also
Thunder, snow and serious wind in Owensboro! Wow!
I heard that too! We were jumping up to see what was going on. Still, looks like the snow will be ending soon π
Another heavy band moving through Louisville at the moment. Got one more band to the NW that will be pretty heavy and that will be it. Grass is covered and roads are just wet right now. Roads will be a problem later as it gets colder.
Its gonna take alot to stick and the ground saturated and air temps at 38 degrees in Knox
Snowing good here in SE Fayette at the moment. Deck is already covered in about a five minute period. Roads are still too warm. If the cold air gets here before the snow ends, then it might get slick overnight.
Snowing in Frankfort, mostly blowing, but a nice little snow shower at the moment! Bring on the thunder!
Couple of good bands moving through Louisville. Might be in the sweet spot for this. Nothing major but still nice to see snow. Take what I can get at this point.
How much you got so far?
I’d say half an inch maybe more. Got one more good band getting ready to move through. Maybe squeeze an inch out of this. Like I said I’ll take whatever snow I can get.
A little over an inch in Valley Station SW Jefferson Co in Louisville
Nickel to quarter size flakes now in London covering everything. Snow starting to accumulate on my road.
I hate this weather, when will KY start getting actual snow? It’s raining outside and haven’t had snow yet this year. 2 years ago we had 22 inches at my house, when will that return.
Never mind now it’s snowing, wonder if it will stick with the ground wet
Snowing big flakes in Clay County. Ground and roads are getting white in Laurel Creek area.
Reports of thunder snow in Louisville metro!!
That is just me. I had taco bell π
Everything turning WHITE in Lawrenceburg!!
Snowing hard in Grant County! π
Nothing so far in north Madison but a few occasional sparse flurries. Comical it is to the north and south of us.
Probably to the east and west as well. We ARE center of the dome U know.
no your not i am π you have had 10x the snow we have
I refer to all of Richmond π ……. π
Absolute white out conditions in SW Louisville!!!! We have thundersnow
meh
Yes cant see anything. It is crazy.
The only thing that comes to my mind right now while looking outside here:
I can see Clearly now, the rain is gonnnne.
Emphasis on Clearly. No snow. Boo!
US 60, Shelbyville Bypass, and 53 in Shelby County are all covered and slick. Probably and inch or so and its still coming down good.
Virga snow in monticello………ugh!!!!!
Kudos to Mr. Bailey on this one….I’ll be back another day to scoff however…..snowboards still in garage….unused.
By the way, I’d like to clarify a post from yesterday.

I think the Snow Nazi got our snow. Boo!
About 1/2 inch of snow in east Frankfort, hoping the Louisville thunder snow makes it here?
Never seen anything like what I just saw. Absolutely crazy.
What does that mean?
If you would’ve stuck your hand in front of your face you would not have seen it. The wind and snow was that intense. I was outside and could not see anything. Feel sorry for the people who were driving at that moment.
Just wanted to clarify the forecast about a swath of snow for earlier this week. Mr. Bailey likes the phrase “a swath of light snow to the region.” Let’s delve a little “deeper” into the swath phenomenon.

Thundersnow in Elizabethtown right now! Pretty wild!
No snow in McCreary Co ….. not even a rogue flake.
Yhundersnow reported in Elizabethtown, Louisville, Frankfort, Hopefully we get it here in Lexington? Last heavy band on its way to Lexington within the next 10-20 min
*Thundersnow
Actually have a little over 2 inches SW Louisville I’m shocked. This is a convective snow which is causing the thunder snow in parts of north central KY. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen complete white out conditions. Heavy blinding snow lightning winds gusting to around 40 mph with the last squall that moved through quite impressive.
I had chocolate cake. Delish. Look, it is the best thing as far as positive, I can muster up at the moment. All we gots is flurries.
You are the west of us though…. Could us dwellers of the centah’ of the dome perhaps get into some thunder snow?? Will my wife let me buy that 47″ TV for the bedroom??
If I have to choose, I must pick the latter π
Yes Bubba pick the 47 inch TV it will last alot longer. North Central KY actually pop a small blister on the snow dome this evening. These Alberta Clippers are now are biggest snow makers it seems.
Knowing your luck Bubba the thunder will take the energy out of the storm before it reaches you.lol
About 1 inch of snow in Frankfort, have yet to see the thunder snow!
Winds have really picked up in Shelbyville, near whiteout conditions and the temp has dropped to 25.
You gotta love these little clippers that come through here. Without them, we wouldnt get hardly no snow at all in these parts.
Just stopped in Hopkinsville, I went and took the grandkids out Snowball fight grandson 5/ grandaughter 2 hits apiece LOL
I’ll echo Ryan. It’s crazy here in Shelbyville. Total whiteout and fierce winds are a’blowin’. Haven’t heard thunder, though.
light rain and wind in monticello right now
I love the cold and snow, cannot stand the weather in KY the past 2 years. I wish it would snow 15+ inches a year. It’s been cold but lack of snow.
I will probably move further north once I’m finished with college. I was thinking Montana, but maybe not so north.
Blinding snow just came thru Frankfort, winds and blizzard conditions for about 5 minutes WOW, this is what makes winter fun, stay safe folks!
So you see Todd what I was saying. It was amazing. Wish it would’ve lasted longer. That 5 minutes is what a blizzard would look like.
That is true, imagine that for hours like up north, But I’ll take it, close to 2 inches in east Frankfort!
Winds just really picked up in Mercer and I am sure I just heard two rounds of thunder here in Burgin to go with the snow.
Sakes alive –
snowing heavily at the moment in northwest Lexington. Probably won’t last long, but it is snowing sideways hard.
Big big problems developing in Louisville flash freeze is now occurring metro safe is now reporting if you get in a non injury wreck exchange info.
It’s going crazy, nuts in Lawrenceburg…very gusty winds, blizzard conditions….can’t see the house across the street…very eerie…but fun!!!!!!
COMPLETE WHITE OUT in northwest Lexington. I mean extreme white out crazy can’t see anything
Down to 22 degrees and still light snow falling with strong winds in Frankfort, roads covered, looking forward to more snow this weekend!
Yeah… Exactly what MarkLex said! Holy snow!!! Leestown Road & Alexandria Drive. Whiteout without a doubt!
Snow coming down pretty good here in Lily in laurel co
Yep – we had that white out here in Lexington too — so cool! But dangerous for drivers!!! This definitely seems to be a bit of and overachiever as we’ve already got slightly over 2 inches at my house in Lex. I’m just happy we got something! It looks so pretty out there!
Wanted to add to that — a little over 2 inches and it’s still coming down hard!
That’s some crazy scary wind out here in south Jessamine!
So crazy! Looking outside now knowing that we just had tornado warnings/squall line, and near 70 degree temps just a couple of days ago, and now blizzard like conditions. Even as brief as this is probably going to be, it was totally worth it. Reminds me of Feb ’98
We have not got the blizzard conditions. More like a medium steady event of snow. About 0.5″, so we have BUST past the 1″ mark for the winter. Yowsa! π
Anybody notice the temps warmed up to 30 or higher? Just warm enough to make the roads wet and grass snowy. I hope students and teachers do not get a false sense of a snow day. Snow on the grass does not count π
Can still happen, but temps will need to drop and snow to start up and fall steady to make it happen.
it is really coming down here, roads are getting slick and we were never put under the weather adv???? maybe tht means we will get the most snow!!! LOL REALLY wanting a snow day tom!!!!!!!!
seriously???? we cant buy snow in monticello…….steady rain right now
We did not get a white-out and I think some of you (not all) are just having electro-static reactions to the air or paranormal activity π
We had steady medium snow and have about almost near maybe possibly 0.5″. This means we have bust past a massive 1″ of snow so far this winter. Yowsa!
BTW, notice how arm it has gotten? Almost warm enough to help null some totals. No road coverage ATM, so let us hope kids and teachers do not get too snow day blind π They might have school unless the roads are covered. Grass does not count.
Have been outside literally standing in it (of my own choice) braving the elements. This is the part of winter I enjoy. Although, I wouldn’t want to brave this every day. In the middle of the heavy snow band and wind, it felt like I was in Alaska for a bit. It was nice. The snowy winter air is so refreshing and crisp.
What an amazing thunder snow I just experienced in southern Lexington, absolutely insane. Pretty sure we are a little over 2 inches now where I am and most of that fell in like 30 minutes!
0.5″ here. meh.
Temps are around 30, so none on the roads. Unless the temps drop and the snow falls steady after that, a lot of kids and teachers might assume a snow day that might not happen. Go to bed! π
0.5″ here, just a few miles from you. Meh.
Around 30 degrees and none on the roads so far. Hope students and teachers do not assume a snow day tomorrow….
Unbelievable snow and wind in Fleming Co!
Not impressed here in Somerset. Same ole story here, little to nothing
Yowsa! A few moments of thundersnow and twirly blizzard like snow at the moment. About 1″ on the ground. Very windy and power has almost gone out twice.
Don’t you dare excited! Think RAIN.
Oh we’ll I tried to be evil. Got sent to moderation:(
Don’t you dare act excited! I told you rain FOREVER!

Just saw a flash of lightning in Richmond. Whiteout conditions right now. Pretty cool!
Berea reporting in. Just woken from bed by a sustained gust of wind that was way louder than anything from that event a couple days ago. The one time I don’t check the blog for an evening update on snow and…BAM, the dome starts leaking. I’d honestly given up hope of seeing anything this year. Time to go outside!
No cool thunder or lightning (damn uz Richmond!)
A little earlier we had absolute whiteout conditions here in western Garrard Co. Amazing burst of snow and wind. Roads are covered and are flash freezing. Very treacherous at the moment.
Snow baby snow!!!! Loving it here in Jackson Co.!!!!! Coming down pretty good!
the snow and wind is crazy here right now, the roads have been bad for awhile and just a few mins ago our lovely NWS just put us under a winter weather adv!!!!! I do believe tht is just alittle to late!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s a blizzard the little trees on my porch is cover the lights on them makes it look so pretty…..
Most snow we’ve had all year in Lawrence County. So glad Charleston NWS was on top with a weather advisory. Nevermind thats right we were one of four counties in the entire state that didn’t have one. Clueless.
Big clap of thunder just now in Paintsville!
Thunder Snow in Johnson County! Chris called it! You’re the best CB!
Hey Chris we are having thunder snow here in Paintsville Ky right now It is pouring the snow and its total white out. Beautiful sight. Amazing sound of thunder and beautiful white snow.
NWS Charleston has upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning, now calling for 4 to 6 inches.
Thundersnow in Williamson, WV
