A powerful storm will move our way Monday night into Tuesday. Widespread rain and thunderstorms will develop during this time as our winds really increase. Gusts of 40mph+ will be likely as cold air wraps in here from the west and southwest…
Cold air will continue to be funneled in from the northwest as snow develop by late Tuesday and Wednesday. A STRONG northwesterly wind flow will mean a continuous stream of widespread snow showers and squalls through the coming weekend. The GFS puts snow on the ground through Friday…
Gusty winds and cold air may make this the harshest period of the winter across our region. As a matter of fact, that cold air deepens over the weekend…

I honestly do not understand the reason for posting 850 maps. That Euro picture is for 12Z (7am) on 3/6. -12 to -14 degrees at 850 still yields 20-25 degrees at the surface. Given that the normal low for early March at Lexington and Louisville is 30, we’re only talking 5 to 10 degrees below normal…if those runs are right. Let alone, much of the deterministic and ensemble guidance has temps during the day going above freezing through the extended period. Yes, this is an anomalous set up with below normal temperatures for the period, but its nothing all that harsh.
MJ..II Understand your thought, although they are forcasting freezing temps in Orlando with snow possible in some areas…If it is going to be freezing in Orlando it will be a little bit colder here in Kentucky.
What would the maps have looked like in March of 1960, MJ?
All great met perspective, but superfluous really, since the root law for Kentucky winter weather now is 90% or more of any significant moisture system falls in the form of rain, or sometimes ice.
If a small system, we get arch and ankle biters. Well, we got an arch biter. Folks north of the river got some ankle biters.
Bring on the deep freeze! Kill the ticks and other bugs that are out.

Texas got more snow this year and even places that have not got snow ever before- got snow this winter. Really.

If I could choose no snow over a little bit of snow and a LOT of salt, I would choose NO snow 100% of the time.
Love your blog and optimism about winters, but I have two words for us getting snow or cold this week or next: bet not. No reason to believe these models.
Eastern half of state in the higher terrain might get a ankle biter this week, from I75 west dusting at best, I think I need to head south for a few weeks until this ugly stuff moves on?
LOL…Louisville is yet again in a doughnut hole for snow….even in the midst of nothing, we get less…… I’d pay for a decent snow as I am still not over winter. I see these monster storms to the north and feel oddly jealous….
Bill…it’s only the model GUIDANCE! Personally would not be surprised to see you guys get a little bit more snow than this…just bear in mind it may not all stick…and overall…this is not one single snow storm to affect the Commonwealth, it will be numerous rounds of low pressure impulses delivering rounds of quick hitting snow systems and/or snow squalls. So at times, it may snow like mad, but long term intermittent duration coupled with ground temps will mitigate/negate ground cover. Either way…most to all will see snow in this state.
