Good Wednesday, everyone. It’s a tradition unlike any other… The Kentucky Weather Center edition of Planes, Trains and Automobiles. We do this on the busiest travel day of the entire year as that’s essentially what the movie revolves around. If you haven’t seen it… You now have an assignment to complete.
Before we get into the weather part of the update, I came across this interesting map showing the actual mileage covered and routes taken by Plane, by Train and by Automobiles…
That’s pretty darn cool if I must say so myself. I’ll get back to PTA in a bit, but we should talk about the actual weather.
We have low pressure rolling into the region today and this kicks off our long holiday weekend. Here’s the updates breakdown for your reading pleasure or displeasure:
TODAY
- Clouds increase with mostly dry skies through sundown.
- Temps range from the low and middle 40s north to the mid and upper 50s south.
- Rain develops quickly from southwest to northeast during the evening.
- Rain continues tonight with the chance for late night snow in the north.
- Areas around Covington even have the chance for a hit and run coating by Thanksgiving morning.
THANKSGIVING
- Gusty showers will be around early in the day with some lingering misty showers.
- A few early day flakes are possible in the north.
- Temps hit the upper 30s to low 40s for much of the day. Gusty winds make it feel colder.
- A few flurries or snow showers kick in during the night.
FRIDAY
- A few flurries or snow showers will be noted across central and eastern Kentucky early on.
- I don’t anticipate anything other than some festive flakes.
- Temps struggle to get out of the low 30s for highs.
- Wind chills will generally be in the low and middle 20s before falling into the teens during the evening.
SATURDAY
- It’s a cold day with temps generally 30-35.
- Clouds increase ahead of our next system.
- A clipper arrives Saturday night with a band of light snow likely.
- This zips in from west to east.
SUNDAY
- Light snow is likely with us through the first part of Sunday.
- Light accumulations will also be possible, and I can’t rule out an inch or two in a narrow stripe. I’ll have to fine tune exactly where this sets up.
- The light snow maker pushes to our east by the afternoon as arctic air builds in.
- Temps may not get out of the upper 20s and low30s for highs.
- Gusty winds make it feel like the teens for much of the day.
- A few lingering flurries or snow showers will be possible in the east through Sunday night.
- Single digit wind chills may show up Sunday night.
Let’s start with the system moving through here tonight through Friday morning. The future radar from the Hi Res NAM shows the rain moving in with the late night flakes in northern Kentucky with the snow showers and flurries in the east by Friday morning. This animation goes from 7pm this evening through 7am Saturday morning…
The Saturday night and Sunday system is a light one that can put down light accumulations in a stripe across the state. There’s some indication the setup into the first half of next week could feature a couple of additional light snow makers zipping through.
The EURO is now showing these…
The GFS is getting there…
Wind chills at times will drop into the single digits from later this weekend into early next week.
The extreme cold should relax for a bit at some point late next week as the trough reloads and comes right back at us a few days later. You can see this very well on the Canadian Ensembles…
Watch the cold relax then reload…
That takes us back to Trains, Planes and Automobiles before we close. This is a must watch video with Steve Martin remembering John Candy and talking about a scene that was left out…

And as always, we have to throw in this absolutely classic scene…
I will have another update later today. Until then, here are your tracking tools to time the rains in from the west…
Have a wonderful Wednesday and take care.
Everyone, have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!
