Good afternoon everyone. Our Thursday isn’t turning out as ugly as I thought as the overnight rains were trucking on through the state leaving us with a partly sunny sky for many. We will still be seeing some isolated showers today… but the added sun will boost some areas into the 50s.
Some notes on our weather future…
– Friday will be windy and very mild with temps making a run at 60 under a mix of sun and clouds. Some scattered showers and storms will be possible.
– A strong cold front will cross the state from New Year’s Eve into early New Year’s Day. Showers and thunderstorms will be along this front with heavy rains a good bet. Winds will crank as well.
– Temps New Year’s Day will fall toward the 30s from west to east.
– There is a possibility we get a wave of low pressure to form along the front as it works to our east. This could cause a band of light snow to break out late Saturday night into early Sunday across the east. Both the NAM and GFS are spitting out some light accumulations for some…
Next week will see a couple of weak systems trying to move in with colder air and a chance of some light snows. The Canadian Model shows the little system I have been hawking for later Tuesday into Wednesday…
Beyond that map is when things will begin to head back into a very wintry pattern. We have the period of Jan. 6th through Jan. 10th to watch for a winter storm somewhere across the east. The odds are also increasing for a major arctic outbreak for much of the country for the middle and end of January.
We have a ton of winter ahead!
Have a great day and take care.

I am a snowlover, but I think today’s weather beats the snow! It’s is wonderful out there 🙂
Cant wait for the snow to pick back up late next week and go through the whole month of Jan.
First headed to Gatlinburg to ring in the New Years!!
Check this out on the 12z of the ECMWF!!!!

A nice low pressure area, then a HUGE shot of cold air!!!!!!
I’ll meet ya there, we’ll be at the Wilderness inn…lol..
Not sure if it’s more than one person, but those links to the raleighwx site continue to not work.
Cool… Isnt it great living so close to something like the Gatlinburg area. All 4 lanes now. 😉
Just copy the link and paste it on the web search.
25E is a great drive from the tunnel to I-40. However, 441 south into Pigeon Forge is still painful due to the backups and standstills.
I know that you are trying to be helpful here…but americanwx.com does NOT allow remote linking to their images. Thus, your links will never show up properly.
Next time you go get intouch with me. I know all the shortcuts and 2 lane backroads with no traffic whatsoever.

you should check that link out. It’s joe Bastardi’s Prediction. he says over the next 10-20yrs, we will see a return of the climate from the 70’s.
Ahhh, ok. Thanks, now I know why.
Looks like we might have another chance for some ‘big snow’ after the 8th….I, for one, would not mind a 70’s weather pattern! I made many memories of zipping down hills at blistering speeds holding on tightly to my Radio Flyer then!
Thanks for the help there. A family member of ours just built a nice cabin/log home on the outskirts of Gatlinburg. Thus, we will likely never have to take 441 in anymore.
Thanks for posting that link. I’m no climatologist or meteorologist but he said what I have been saying (without the science) for several years. As he said it should be intuitive. Even a layman like me understands that weather tends to follow patterns and we all know from history and other disciplines that our planet’s climate has changed many times throughout history. Thanks again!
Great link…
Not to mention the Meckster here, but we have to give credit where credit is due…
Bill has spoke of this in the past, and they both are correct.. Cycles people cycles…
I can open it no problem, but you have to hold down the Ctrl key then click the link..
Also, I’m using Firefox, but I’m not sure if that makes a difference…
right click on the link, copy link location and paste in browser also works
this run is colder for days 8-10 and hints at that storm chris mentioned. I’m curious to see what the euro weeklies produce friday.
00Z NAM blows the squall line up fairly good in eastern KY Saturday.
I LOVE winter because of the snow and the fact that I don’t have to deal with SEVERE WEATHER!!! I am not looking forward to the possibility of storms this weekend. 🙁
Good evening all. Hope everyone has had a good day! One more to go and this year is in the books! I trust that everyone has had some memorable moments to think back on…hopefully good.
Chris, remember, I asked yesterday if we would need to worry about flooding with this system…now, I am thinking it may be a real threat. Hope not.
As long as they don’t go severe, I don’t mind a good thunderstorm…gonna be in the house, watching football. The next weekend intrigues me with the possibility of snow. And, yes, children, the weather does go in cycles, just like clothes from the 70s.:) (Wish I had hung on to mine now…)
Have a good night, all. Looking forward to the next update, Chris. Thanks for a great year of weather blogging for all of us weather geeks…looking forward to lots more fun in 2011!
Thanks again Chris! I have had some good times and some sad times during 2010. Here’s to hoping that 2011 is better!
Yea, I would have updated too if I had missed the temps by 10-15 degrees.
spc bringing the slight risk into western ky for new years eve. even with marginal instabilty for the south the amount of shear could be sufficent for severe weather.
