Good Tuesday, friends. Showers and thunderstorms will be common across the bluegrass state today. These boomers may bring some very heavy rains and a few of the storms may be strong or severe. This is part of a rather stormy setup for the rest of the week.
There is a lot of moisture available for these storms to tap and that means very heavy rain will be a good bet. The greatest severe weather potential is likely to be to our south, but a few severe storms can’t be ruled out across parts of central and southern Kentucky.

Today’s Risk Area
Current Watches
Scattered showers and storms will continue to be possible each day through the upcoming weekend. High temps should continue to average below normal with upper 70s to low 80s for many.
There is a model battle brewing down the road. Many of the operational models like the GFS and European are suggesting widespread 90s developing late next week. The GFS Ensembles goes the other way and develops another deep trough across the region…
While I do think we get in on a period of “hot” weather this summer, the trend of dips in the trough is a tough nut to crack right now.
I will have updates on the storms as needed. Have a great day and take care.
Well since we had 0 rain last night and not really expecting any today mowing could be done easily today.
Not a drop of rain in Carrie last night
like yesterday moisture moving up the Mississippi River
I hope it makes it up to the Ohio River today.
I like our chances.
If the heat makes an appearance next week, hope all of us do get a soaking rain over the next few days, or we’ll be watering gardens double time by then. The only thing that has saved those of us not blessed by rain this year is the fact we’ve not been extremely hot, and plants are not overly stressed.
Agree, if the 90s show up the dry areas will quickly become very dry areas, the clouds and cooler weather so far have kept some moisture around but if the sun and heat gets in here then its full on drought conditions for a lot of folks that haven’t seen the rain in a month!
I’ve got an animation from the HRR that shows the possible progression of the storms on my site if you want to see that (click my name)
We are looking for rain here too. However, a small part of the county saw flooding rains just the other day. Weird.
The storms over the last few weeks have been rather isolated and very slow movers (which is another reason the rains were so isolated). While the storms have been very efficient rain producers, you had to be lucky enough to be right under the storm cell, itself, to get the heavy rain amounts, as the storm developed, matured and then rained itself dry. So, while a few lucky folks have seen some soakers, I’d say 80% of us, at least, have only seen light rain amounts or none at all.
We had a “training” event here in Pike Johnson counties. There were a bunch of storms that lined up and trained over the same areas. The storms covered a pretty narrow swath, so it was weird to see 2″ of rain fall only 5-10 miles away from where only a trace of rain fell.
Same thing has happened here in my part of So. Fayette county. For the past few weeks excluding one day, we only got about 0.15 in. of precip. Then the motherload of rain dropped on us during the evening and overnight hours where I totaled a whopping 2.5 inches of rain, And a short trip 5-10 miles north had nothing. Went from dry to flooding within hours.
Here in Louisville, some parts of the area have received tremendous amounts of rain, even flash flooding. Then, there were some areas that got hit by the ‘train’ that put down more high water issues. I live in the southwest part of the county but have only picked up about 0.33″ over the past 2 weeks. My rainwater storage for my garden is down to about 40% of total capacity, much lower than the full capacity about this time last year.
The last rain i have had was the 28th of May
Nashville TN now getting a thundershower, moderately heavy rain.
But a Tornado Warning now in effect for DeKalb County TN a few counties to the east of Nashville. Radar indicated rotation for the moment. Perhaps a small chance that cell could remain intact and cross into Kentucky.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch still remains for central Tennessee…….but at this time Kentucky has no watches. Heads up anyway for south-central Kentucky counties near the TN line. Looks like Kentucky will share in the wealth of storms later on, including tonight. Can’t forget the chances for some flooding issues (some flood warnings are now in effect just to the west of Nashville).
Someone better start nailing down that Watch box soon for parts of south-central and eastern KY. These storms are rapidly firing up and will affect those areas in a couple of hours or so.
Cumberland, Adair, Wayne and additional counties north and east of them.
And indeed, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch now in effect for much of central and east Kentucky. CB just sent out a tweet concerning this.
What a difference a day makes. This time yesterday a cool 70. A warm humid sunny 85 today.
