Good Thursday everyone. The weather across the region is going to undergo a major change over the next 24 hours and it’s a change that will bring in an impressive shot of cold air. We have the potential for some frost before the weekend is out and we are putting out the heads up for all the green thumbs out there.
The strong cold front bringing the chill our way will be arriving on the scene later tonight. Before we get to that… the slow as smoke cutoff low pressure will still impact part of our day. Some clouds and an isolated shower will be possible this morning across the east before we clear things out a bit. Highs will hit 80 in the far west and low 70s east.
Winds will then crank up this afternoon into tonight as our cold front moves in. Gusts could top out at 20-25mph at times as clouds increase. Some showers will be a good bet along our front that blasts through overnight. This will then usher in some very cold air for so early in the fall season. More on that in a moment… let’s track today’s weather first.
Current Temps
Winds

Friday will see our winds continue to crank up. Gusts of 30mph or better will be possible as much colder air rushes in from the northwest. A mix of sun and clouds will be possible early before clouds increase quickly during the day. This happens as a disturbance drops in from the northwest, which should also bring some scattered showers in here later in the day into Friday night. Showers should linger into Saturday across the east.
High temps for Friday will be in the 60-65 degree range for many, with some upper 50s in the north.
To show you how much this setup is like one from winter… the first snows of the season will fly into the mountains of West Virginia Check it out…
It shouldn’t add up to that much… but a minor accumulation is possible at the highest points. Don’t get too excited… we still have a while before we can talk about that stuff around here. ![]()
In the meantime, we will have to settle for some frosty conditions over the weekend. Lows Saturday morning will be within a few degrees of 40. Saturday high temps are going to be way below normal with readings in the 50s for many. Sunday morning will see temps really tumble with low to mid 30s across parts of central and eastern Kentucky and upper 30s west. It’s possible for some areas to hit 32 or lower. Upper 20s? Brrrr! Highs will range from the upper 50s to low 60s. Monday’s lows should be similar in the east.
The cold air is impressive and this GFS Temp Departure map really shows it…
As we look farther down the road… temps for next week will warm closer to normal as we look to get in on a very nice stretch of fall weather. Highs will be back into the 70s by mid week as we really start to see the fall colors showing up.
The overall pattern is one that is reloading the cold across northwestern Canada toward Alaska. We will need to watch for this possibly making a run at us during the second half of October and early November. My suspicion is it may try to create some early season mischief.
Have a great Thursday and take care.
