Good Thursday everyone and thanks for checking out the blog. This is the time of year when we begin to shift gears from winter mode to spring mode and that means thunderstorms and the threat for severe weather start to take center stage. The threat for some booming storms will be with us today across parts of the state and that is something for us to keep an eye on and that is just what the blog will be doing.
We have talked and talked about the overall setup that finds low pressure across the plains states. This SLOW moving low is going to continue to sit and spin for a few more days and this puts us squarely into the warm sector. That means very mild temps roll on with temps today and Friday back into the 60s with 70 or a touch better possible for areas getting some decent sunshine. This also means an increasing threat for showers and storms… some of which could be strong or even severe and produce locally heavy rains.
The best threat for severe weather today into tonight will be across central and western Kentucky. Here is the latest all inclusive severe weather map from the Storm Predication Center…
Take a look at how photogenic this storm is and at what a reach it has across the country here on Water Vapor…
It looks like a line of showers and storms will come rolling in from west to east today and you can track the line here on regional radar…
Friday will see a break in the action to start out the day before showers and storms get cranking again during the afternoon and evening hours. Here is what the GFS looks like during that time…
Friday Afternoon
Friday Evening
That takes us into the weekend and a much colder pattern that will set up. More on and off showers will be with us during this time and those will likely hold strong into Monday. Highs for Sunday and Monday will likely be in the chilly 40s.
The good news is that the sun and milder air will push in here for the middle and end of next week.
I will have updates on the storms as needed so make sure you check back. Have a great Thursday and take care.

Thanks Chris! I love a good non damaging storm. So we may be seeing a few around these parts huh? As long as they’re not the severe kind. Those 40’s will seem down right cold after the wonderful weather we’ve been having around here the last few days!
First storms of the season! Exciting!
Noticed there was no mention of the “s” word for next week! 🙂
Yeah, the “s” word is gone. We will see it in November, so I think this is my last time on here until then. See you all then.
Ky isint done with the snow yet. We might not have anything that accumulates, but we will have at least some on and off snow showers.
some big@ss thunder here in nky baby!!!!
Thanks for the updte, Chris. Got to read the blog yesterday, but was too busy to comment. The rain just started here about half hour ago, and is not heavy…just annoying.
I gather that this round is not going to hang around as an all day thing? There will be breaks in the action, is the idea that I am getting.
Anyway, temp is 55, but the rain is cold. (Yeah, yeah, I know…it’s March!) 😉
It’s kinda sad to see everyone start leaving with the end of the snow. So much still to talk about – severe weather, summer droughts, hurricanes in the fall, etc. And if nothing else, KY Basketball! LOL!
I rarely post but still read – hope that not everyone says goodbye! Having lived in KY all my life, I have seen it snow in May before, so we are still early in the season. In fact, when I got married over 27 years ago, we were going to get married in April and ended up with a March date instead. The day in March was picture-perfect – almost 70, sun shining, birds singing – a gorgeous day. The April date came and what did we see? Snow. Only in Kentucky! LOL!
Everyone, have a great day and for those leaving, a great summer and fall!
More earthquakes in Chile. 6.7 and 6.9.
It’s never too late, I was living in CB’s hometown(Salyersville) at the time, Could have been ’93 but definitely April 3rd-21 inches heavy wet snow, so don’t give up yet. Personally, the frogs sounded pretty good to me last night…..
All I’ve seen today is a few sprinkles and from the looks of the radar the rain is done, at least for now.
Does not do much good to post when they go to lala land(moderation)
some areas west of LEX could get over 2 inches rain tommorow, small streams will need to be watched.
