Good Thursday and Merry Christmas Eve to one and all. We are rolling into our Holiday with a mega storm that is pounding  a whole lot of the country. This will produce a headline grabbing blizzard across the plains into the western Great Lakes. This storm is going to have a big impact on our weather as well with high winds and rain this evening into Christmas Morning. That will be followed by a change to much colder  air for the weekend and the chance for some snow on the ground.

This storm to our west is awesome looking on the models…

Christmas Evening

That storm REALLY wraps up quite nicely just to our west. What does that mean for us?

1. Winds are going to increase around here later today into our Christmas morning. Gusts to 35-40mph will be possible.

2. Rain will increase from west to east later today and really crank up tonight into Christmas Morning. Locally heavy downpours will be likely.

3. Temps will climb well into the 40s to near 50 this evening into the overnight before crashing into the 30s from west to east Christmas afternoon and evening.

4. Some evening snow showers and flurries will be possible.

Travelers can track the rains into the region right here…

Once into the weekend… temps will be MUCH colder and we will see the big cutoff low across the plains move toward the Ohio Valley. This will bring weak impulses into our region meaning snow showers may become common.

GFS Sunday Morning

Beyond that… the cold settles in and the pattern threatens to go brutally cold during the first two weeks of January. All of this happens as our southern branch of the jet stream continues to produce storms. One such storm will try to fire up toward the last few days of the year!

This December across the country has already been historic and that goes for parts of this region. The rest of the winter is likely to continue this trend and will leave all of you smiling before all is said and done!!

Take care and Merry Christmas.
