Good evening, all. We have an increasing potential for icy roads to develop tonight across central and eastern Kentucky. We have wet roads with areas of freezing rain, freezing drizzle and a wintry mix kicking in. As temps drop deep into the 20s… look out.
Only southeastern Kentucky is under a FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY, but all areas have the possibility of seeing things ice up tonight.
This will be one of those night’s where the radar will NOT tell the whole story. It won’t pick up on the low level moisture hanging around.
If you plan to be out traveling tonight and Tuesday morning, watch for black ice.
The pattern does break a bit this weekend into early next week, but the atmosphere signals are loading up again for another arctic assault on our region and much of the country. Check out the MAJOR block going up across Alaska…

That looks VERY much like the pattern that brought us the brutal period last January into February.
By the way… the progression of this winter has me thinking about the winter of 92/93. I had been stringing you guys along on that one for a few days. 😉
Enjoy the evening and take care.
The only thing that comes to mind about 92-93 is the now infamous Super Storm of March 1993. I remember in February of ’93, we were having tornadoes and severe thunderstorms…and very mild weather. At the time, I lived in London, KY.
I think I would gladly take that sort of winter, if it ended with something historic like the March blizzard. I still have video tapes of that historic storm.
Snowing in frankfort, temp around 33, Chris again is the only weather guy that gets even near the forecast this time of year, be careful out their folks, roads might get tricky in some spots!
I remember we had a lot of misses from the models that year but they all came together in march. That would be awesome to see that again!
A pretty warm winter in 92/93 followed one whopper of a snow on the SEC tourney weekend in March. at least for SE Ky. I think Lex got 4 or 5 inches.
Wow, NOAA release the 6-10 day forecast and there were saying above temps for the time period.
If im not mistaken but I probably am either in February or March of 93 we had back to back snowstorms.
Prelude, you’re right l live in Henderson co we had one Feb about 7 inches and the one in March over a foot. They shut down hwy 60 because of drifting.
CB is probably right that it looks similar up to this point, but I’m not buying it ending up similar. We also had much more consistent snow storms in the years leading up to that storm. This pattern has changed. The summer and fall leading up to this winter did not match up with what we had in past years in the winters following them. We may get a big storm, and we are due for one, but something has changed from past winters and it has been almost two decades since we have had a big snow.
I’m going to keep saying it lol. Probably don’t mean much. Its been 2 decades since we stoped testing nuclear weapons on a regular basis. All the old folks swear that was the cause of all the snowstorms back several decades ago. Who knows just what I hear from the older generation. Probably not much truth be hide it.
I remember March of ’93 where we had a snow roll in on a Friday evening, and by Sunday morning we had 22 inches of snow. There were deeper drifts and I-64 was closed here in our area. It seemed that in some parking lots we had piles of dirty, black, melting snow that hung around until the first of May. That was some storm.
Ten years ago back in December of 04 we had that infamous 20 inches right prior to Christmas. Plus two or three years ago we had several snow falls.and
What part of Kentucky are you in? Not had a decent snow in two decades in the southern part. Not doubting, just curious and it must not had been a wide spread storm.
Henderson co is right on the Ohio river by Evansville, Ind. This storm was felt all the way down in ky lake.
Clays Ferry bridge over KY River on I 75:
air 33.2 wind NNE at 4+/- mph
pavement 35.6 subsurface 35.0
RH 92%
Could be a very interesting and tricky commute in the morning for I 75ers…be careful!
I remember the superstorm of 93 well. 18-20″ snowfall in Morristown, just east of Knoxville. Now that was a snowfall…. On I-75 just below Chattanooga, folks had to be air lifted from their vehicles to local hotels and other various stories of that event. Folks don’t get your hopes up for another once in a lifetime event like that one…….that’s not gonna happen again for many years, if ever, in this region…..the climate HAS changed since then.
Yea, my family and I lived in Morristown back then, not too far from where the Morristown office of the NWS would be built. We were huddled around the otherwise seldom used fireplace until the power finally came back on. Never will forget seeing some snow drifts almost up to window level. A neighbor’s old garage door was warped enough to allow a few millimeters gap under the closed door; the blizzard conditions caused big snow piles inside the garage through the tiny gaps!
I’m a non believers about the warmer climate theory. Our climate comes in cycles. I can remember back in 90’s they were saying Florida would be under water by the turn of this century.
I don’t think it’s so much a warmer climate, but a changing climate. It seems as though that the patterns of moisture, temperature, etc… just doesn’t come together like it did in the past. We used to get systems coming out of the south that had a quick rain to snow changeover and produced some large snows. Now they all seem to be a long period of rain with a small window of backside snow. Something has changed. We are looking at two decades of no significant snow.
And a relative lack of severe cold since about 1994 (click link here). Last winter and this winter have had some below zero weather, but nothing like in 1994 and in previous decades.

I live in se Floyd co just a few miles from pike co line and in march of 93 we had over 2 1/2 feet in my yard. The following yr we got almost 2 feet the first week of April! Would love to see it happen again!
Just got back inside from a 5 mile run through Marehaven, McConnell’s Trace and Masterson Station on the NW side of Lexington… roads in the subdivisions are getting super slick and look like sheets of diamonds! It’s gonna get interesting for some tonight! Be safe out there!
Absolutely pouring snow in greenup….everything is white
Getting to the point where I am finding myself
becoming rather apathetic about snow chances and won’t get stirred up till there is a reason to. Just a few short months till spring!
Well, it’s blowing scarlet and grey in my house! Way to go Buckeyes!!!!
