Good Monday, everyone. It’s now secret that we are in a snow drought across the bluegrass state. To illustrate the point… I haven’t made a “Call For Snowfall” map since back in November. We have two weeks left in January to try and make up for lost time. Can we do that? A series of clippers look to be our main hope in the short term.
Let’s start with what’s going on today before we get to the clipper potential.
It’s another snowless day in our region with mostly sunny skies and temps hitting the upper 40s and low 50s. This is making for great weather for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Tuesday will find similar temps across the region with clouds on the increase. Those clouds are developing ahead of a cold front that swings in here Tuesday night into early Wednesday. That may try to pop a wave of low pressure along it just to our east. Colder air comes in behind this system with the potential for some light snow or flurries.
A southern system will then develop and likely miss us to the south and southeast by Thursday and Friday.
The most interesting setup for the next week comes later this weekend when a ridge pops up the west coast, allowing for a strong disturbance to drop in from the northwest…
That’s a good looking setup for a stout system to develop, but the trend of this winter says to not get excited until… well… you get the idea. 😉
The overall idea of a very cold pattern developing is a good one. Check it out…
That’s from the CIPS Twitter feed and underscores the idea of a very cold period returning. What is CIPS?
The CIPS Analog Guidance is an impact-based weather resource that objectively finds similar historical events to the upcoming numerical model forecast.
I will get back to regular updates later today. Make it a good one and take care.
i think a very cold and snowy period is coming and based on past winters i also think a double digit. snowstorm is probable this year.just because of the dynamic atmospheric set up. wind energy moisture and coldpattern devoloping around here.
No snow is fine with me – I have to work outside in that stuff. Hate it.
33 degree rain is much better
A lot of snow is fine with me – I have to work outside in that stuff. Love it.
Haha. I agree.
Right on Bjenks!!!
Lucy at least wants a chance of it so she can spot the ball and break some hearts. Even football season is near done.
Did the season even start?
Bet the Packers wish it did not! Discount double choke!
Speaking of choke, my outlook of two 2″ to 3″ events might choke as well and be too high.
Rather sad such a low outlook could be overstated. Jeepers.
Let it snow! Let it snow! C’mon man!
It’s getting to be that time of the year for SKYWARN Storm Spotter courses preceding the spring severe weather season.
For starters, NWS Jackson KY will have their first course Feb 9 (in Stanton KY).

NWS Morristown TN has their first session Feb 5 in Morristown.
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mrx/?n=skywarn_page
Check NWS office websites for Paducah, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, Wilmington OH and Charleston WV for their SKYWARN courses within their service areas.
Spotter training schedule for ILN CWA counties is located here (nothing scheduled for Kentucky counties yet):
http://www.weather.gov/iln/spottertrainingschedule
While I do not have time to become an actual storm spotter at this point in time, I am thinking about attending their annual big spotter training event. Last year it was in Dayton and in 2013 it was near Cincinnati so I figure this year it’ll be somewhere in the Columbus area. Road Trip!
Edit: looks like that Big Event will be in Columbus on March 7th. Hmm…
Did I miss something? Small chance of light snow or flurries, and 6 days from now a “MAYBE”. I don’t think we will break this drought with that outlook.
Relative to zero it is. This blog has declined from the early years of big snows or bust, to debating an inch of snow in relation to nothing. Double jeepers.
MEHHH…
I raise your MEHHH with a MEGA MEHHH! 🙂 ……… 🙁
Its said when we start to watch for clipper systems. I highly doubt we see a good snow this winter.
As I stated last week when the talk of these systems coming the next couple of weeks, they r goin south….yawn
When the talks started, i meant to say
well if its not going to snow Im just happy its not raining. my arthritis hates the rain. 🙂 and my kids are loving this sunny weather.
You do a great job Chris. This site provides some great information.
However, you have one of the most depressing comments sections I have ever seen. Constants with the it will never snow. As early as November and then all the way to spring. The only time it was not like this last year is when the snow hit. Pretty good comments section then. You could guess who would post and would not. You knew which comments and posters would be gone. Then the next storm showed up. Models posted about it and then nothing. So it missed and the same comments began popping up.
I guess I just miss reading some of the good posts instead of the same thing all the time. Forums were just a part of why I loved coming here. I may not have posted much but I did read a lot. Guess I need to take a long break and check back in a few months. Keep up the good work.
“However, you have one of the most depressing comments sections I have ever seen”.
The scope of what you’ve seen must be staggeringly small. This place is the Happy Fun Tree of Candycorn Land compared to almost anywhere else. If you want to feel better about this little corner of the web, take a hop, skip, and a jump and head over to Topix-KY or just any ole commented story on WKYT. We’ll forget the rest of the entirety of the web exists for the sake of this point.
No soup for you!
I think a lot of the old regular posters got ran off because of zero tolerance for debate on here. CB does a pretty good job of moderating what he thinks is inappropriate, but a few other people thought they could up their status with CB by trying to play moderator.
You used to be able to come on here and get some pretty knowledgeable interpretations of the latest maps in between CB’s updates, but if the maps may have changed since CB’s latest update or they saw something different than CB, then they were accused of being a hater. Many of the posters being attacked never said one negative word about CB, but were attacked just by maybe seeing no snow, more snow, or less snow, than CB. A few did go over the line and CB took care of them, but some other people on here over stepped their bounds and ran off other knowledgeable regular posters off.
That said, some appeared to be perhaps unintentionally hijacking CB’s blog, so it kind of goes both ways.
We are in new territory though for the blog. A winter so snow wimpy even the models are not buying into it with their usual hyperbole.
Hey Bob. Hope all is well. One of the issues with the comments section in recent years is the intentional trolling of this site by a select few. Their intent was to cause phony fights and to try to drive traffic away from this site and to their own site. Believe it or not… some of these fights were from the same person taking up different posting names. He created fake names to bash things he was posting under his real name so he could then promote his poor attempt at a weather blog. That’s a sad, but true story and is just one of many.
I’ve had lots of “comments” that originated from TV stations and NWS offices from our region. The intent was similar… to try to drive traffic away from here and to what they were saying. While they keep trying to do that… this site keeps growing in popularity. Why? Because I’m right all the time? Of course not… I miss the mark on many occasions. But, I am ALWAYS here for you guys no matter the weather and no matter the season. I never take a day off and will update numerous times a day and more so on active weather days. I do this while STILL doing my real job in TV.
To all the people I outlined above… if you want my business… outwork me! Don’t just try to create fake drama or badmouth me… get to work and beat me! Put in the time and effort I do with this blog and all my weather jobs!
Mini rant over. 🙂
Right on Chris! There are several of us at my “first responder” agency that turn to your blog when severe weather threatens our area. You do good work, call it the way you see it, and generally have the weather dead in the rights from a few days out.
Keep up the good work!
……. It was Rolo!!!!! 🙂 😉 😉
I agree CB. No use in allowing them to use your site to get traffic to their site.
I trust you completely in making the decision on what should or not be said on this site. It’s your site by the way. A few others had taken it upon themselves to make that decision and it wasn’t their place to do so. Ran off a few people that truly wanted a weather discussion and had not intent on trying to belittle you or drive someone to their site.
I think Bubba was right, it was that Rolo guy causing all the trouble. Always predicting dome busters that never happened. lol Depressed everyone.
Enjoying the 60 degree temps models have been horrendous with temps
I’m going to have to head outside Andy. Not stepped out today and missing out on a good one. Agree that models have been bad. Weather guys have a tough job.
Agree Andy. They have been horrible with the cold and the mild. They aren’t biased in any one direction… just flat out spitting out terrible data anymore. Makes it tough on me. ha
Seriously guys, I love snow but who needs snow when we have beautiful weather like we have had the last 3 days and counting. 60 degrees now and I am LOVING it!!!!
60 degrees and sunny in January. Our weather is so messed up. I wouldn’t have your job CB for nothing. It’s sooo interesting but so unpredictable. Times have changed. The seasons are not as stable as they use to be. I love all the seasons. Ky is the best!!
During winter, CB should be a roadie and resident met for Jimmy Buffet! 🙂 Maybe get a discount from the over-priced, but tasty Margaritaville 🙂
Well if we can’t have snow. I’ll take the 60 degree weather with full sunshine in January. Weather reminds me of a John Denver song, sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy…..
