Good afternoon, gang. You know your friendly weatherdude loves his wintertime… But, I could get used to this. I’m on day 3 of a 4 day weekend and my weather timing could not have been better. Gorgeous skies and pleasant temps have given me the chance to get back into my outdoor running mode! I like it (Don’t judge me :))
As far as the future weather goes… winter is ready to fight back in over the next few days. We get a cold front in here later Tuesday into early Wednesday. Some rain showers will be ahead of it with the potential for a few snow showers or flurries behind it.
The southern storm that follows that up still looks like it stays away from us, but the European Model now has it grazing southeastern Kentucky…
As always… we shall see.
The better shot at some snow comes later this weekend as a system dives in from the northwest. Watch how this thing digs in as a big ridge jumps out west…
That’s a setup upstairs that can lead to a fairly potent system trying to develop. As I started earlier, the seasonal trend suggests a hearty helpingย of “wait and see”.
Enjoy the rest of your day and take care.
What a spectacular day. 60 with full sunshine. Cant beat that for mid January.
I like winter, but the last few days has me in spring mode.
Thanks Chris. Hopefully we can get the snow machine cranked up and running soon! Have a greAt Monday evening everyone!
Awesome January weather day indeed. It was like spring outside and it has been awesome! After these past few days, I can honestly say that I don’t care if it snows or not the rest of the winter as long as we get a steady supply of days like today in the mean time.
Enjoy it guys we usually paid for it . Only time will tell.
Winter is on life support, and not expected to pull through.
Easily the worst winter I’ve seen in terms of warm temps and lack of snowfall. This is the product of climate change, whether it be natural or influenced by man. You rarely hear it discussed by meteorologists, at least publicly. But I wonder when we can finally acknowledge the obvious.
In the meantime, I’m enjoying the weather and I laugh at the models that suggest another cold outbreak. Looking forward to spring in February.
How do you like the blowtorch now?
Ohh yeah bring on the blowtorch.
Guys u act like its the first time it has hit the 50s in January. I can remember it hit 70s on Christmas day back around early 1973 or 74 and what did we get 77,78,79. The winters at that time were harsh. This warmer climate is hog wash!!!
Well, for me, it wasnt that it hit 67 in Nashville today it is that I come on here and other websites and here and see people saying and posting maps about how cold it will be and then nothing happens. Now, dont misundestand, this is not slight on Chris, he is one of the few weather guys that forecasts the way he feels and not what the NWS says verbatim, it is more about the general state of affairs. Now, like you stated, I know it is only the end of January basically and we have another month to go but I know that once we get to February, with each passing day, the chances of what we all want decrease and decrease.
^^What he said^^
Both NASA and the NWS have both confirmed that globally, 2014 was in fact the warmest year on record. Climate change is real whether you choose to believe it or not. Now that doesn’t necessarily mean our winters and summers will all be warmer nor does it mean we will get no snow, but facts are facts and that in turn does not translate to “hogwash” as you call it…
They already backed track on the data and we are talking 100ths of a degree. Sun activity has over a thousand times more impact than anything man-made, but the actual logic seems to go amiss. Logic gets in the way of fat cushy grants, green investment portfolios and wealth redistribution. ๐
Oh yeah, no soup for you! Besides, one less hot bowl will make the temperature less warm ๐
Winning!
Never said anything about man made Bubba. Climate change happens in natural cycles. It happening in cycles all throughout history. Ever heard of “the little ice age”? Or the years of warmth before that happened during the medieval period? History proves itself time and time again. I’ll take that soup now! ๐
And what exactly was last year’s very cold winter?
Manbearpig approved! No soup for either one of you!
So why are the models off? What criteria for them has changed? If we’re barely supposed to reach 50 and then push 60 and beyond, it seems something in the models could be tweaked.
I am so disappointed in this whole situation; I am over this Winter. The question I want answered, beyond, “the models are stuggling with so many pieces of energy” or “there are two very active jet streams.”
This goes well beyond that in my opinion, one of the ways I think we can prevent this from happening next fall, is to determine how so many people could have been so wrong.
I thought this was the year that we finally get some snow in the middle TN area but alas, outside of the next three weeks, we are done. By the time we get to the end of Feb early March snow is really hard to come by.
Guess I just need to move to one of the snowbelt regions of the US, this is going on over a decade that we have had more than 5″ in the Nashville area.
this year there is no snow belt.
except maybe around the Great Lakes and the Rocky Mountains.
the plowing industry has lost a lot of money this year.
I guess it’s like a farmer trying to survive during a drought.
If we get snow this year I’m thinking late Feburary or early march, this seemsto be a weak winter after the last two fairly harsh stuff.
Lets hope one big one can hit and then bring on a early spring?
The big issue is that we aren’t getting much precipitation of any kind. Parts of western Kentucky are already in moderate drought and that will likely spread eastward over the coming weeks. We really need this pattern to change and get some significant rain, or snow, or things could get really ugly come April and May.
I think we are going to come in well under the winter snow forecast predictions…30+ inches predicted for us in Harlan County…not unless we get hammered with a big storm…
if its not going to snow.
let’s enjoy this warm weather.
I still feel that is going to get cold coming up soon.
now will it produce any snow
I do not know.
I think the way all these systems have been just rolling or scrapping by us in the south is setting us up for a thumping. We have artic air in and out and big systems developing in the south. I think it’s just a matter of time before they hook up.
The tides will turn, the dunes will shift, and one day soon our wheels WILL spin helplessly in the SNOW. You gotta believe.
Then I can whine about shoveling my driveway ๐
