Good Friday, everyone. It’s a day of tracking winter weather across the bluegrass state and surrounding areas. Moisture will increase quickly from south to north and that means a wintry mix develops this morning That mix will then give way to a band of snow later in the day into tonight.
The setup continues to favor a healthy snow band oriented from southwest to northeast across the heart of the state late today into the wee hours of Saturday morning. That band has the potential to overachieve in some areas. For that reason, I have added the “locally higher” qualifier to the coating to 2″ area…
That new call for snowfall also shows a little more potential across the southeastern mountains for Saturday morning.
Whatever falls through this event will be very wet and we will have some melting. Still… we really need to watch the main area I’ve highlighted in the darker blue. There was a strong trend in the overnight model data to suggest the possibility of some higher amounts.
Given the trend of the winter and the marginal temps… I am sticking with the more conservative approach for now.

I will have updates as needed throughout the day. Make it a good one and take care.
The temperatures have been too warm for us to receive any snow accumulations from this. If it snows hard and long enough, it may stick for a short period of time, but it will quickly melt. I love snow and this season has depressed me………..
I`m going out on a limb and project that Nashville and Memphis Tennessee will get more snow than Kentucky, this season. Even Texas is getting 4 to 6 inches from this system.
“The temperatures have been too warm.” “Even Texas got 4-6 inches” hmmm..sounds like an oxymoron. Has it been below freezing all winter in Texas? I must be missing something.
The storm was supposed to gain strength as it moved this way, so how could it have been stronger in Texas?
Areas of Texas have consistently gotten much bigger snows for many years than the bulk of the state and including this one. Our location for the warm air flow knocks our snow chances down and creates the foundation of our fence.
Not all the same air flows, but what will drive it NE is the same air flow that creates our own oxymoron: 33/32. We usually get the fringe action from these. Well, over the past 17 years anyway.
Like real estate it’s location, location, location. And a little luck.
Nothing changed, change in climate is impossible by any means. Things are exactly the same as they were 17 years ago or 6000 years ago at the beginning.
Whut choo talkin’ bout Willis?
Ain’t no talk here about CC. No Manbearpig believer here. Snap!
6000 at the beginning. Hmmmm. Yeah. I’ll just move along.
I remember reading somewhere Nashville has not had over a inch of snow in over 1400 days..Yet we whine..lol
Pretty sure Nashville has had a few several inch snows in the past four years. They last about one day, but they got them.
Not going to get hyped up about this system, however, we will need to keep an eye on precipitation trends today to see if this storm is capable of any precip backbuilding. Already seeing a little of this in northern AL/MS.
What’s happening with the precipitation in Northern Alabama/Mississippi was forecast to develop. Its a small area of low pressure developing and with the aid of the jet stream. Precip is breaking out that should head NE that really is the main show for mid afternoon through evening depending on where your at in Kentucky.
How much snow would be enough? Just curious…..
Enough for my boys to build a snowman !
Looking ahead…..next weeks system is still on the GFS. Suppressed and to our south. Look out northern Ga/Al. Seriously? What a joke.
More like snow oppression! Warm air is a cruel dictator in the winter.
Nothing to see here. Of course I am talking the Louisville area. I am more concerned about the storm that is seven days out. That one has moster written all over it and there will be cold air to play with.
Remember it is the new trend.
Thanks for the update Chris. I am glad you finally got to put out a first call map. Longest map drought in blog history. LOL
Agreed. For the first time this year, I do see “potential” in that one and it looks somewhat like the setup of the 1993 monster….though I’m confident that won’t replay itself. If it should, their would most likely be a sharp cutoff at the TN\KY state line….snow to the south. lol
The southern fence, it exists also!
Ice, ice baby. Doo du du doo du du doo doo.
Bjenks, I wouldn’t be so quick to write Louisville off for this evening. Hi-res models are bringing Louisville into the accumulating zone for snow. Some got some possible banding developing whether that happens or not is yet to be seen.
We have sleet and snow mixing right now in Somerset. Started about 7:30 or so. But the temps feel like they are getting colder. I’m sure it is just the dampness, but it is a cold sleet and snow mix falling here right now. Would be nice if we got in on the heavier bands later tonight. Ah well, have a great (and safe) Friday everyone! Thanks Chris.
Snow shower in the brodhead ky area,
Snowing hard already have a dusting.
Getting ready for my big date with Thelma Lou tonight boys…nothing to see here, so nip it! 🙂
Snow in brodhead?? I’ve been outside in town since 730 and I can count all the flakes ive seen on one hand.
Well I have a broad head address but I live up on the creek and we had some hard snow showers, I guess it is a thin line
You tryin’ to bring that puny forecast into MY house!

My prediction: the snow is gonna hold off ’till after the wild game dinner tonight at Ewing Baptist Church.
Made smoked pork tenderloin, smoked venison backstrap with my own spicy rub, and will probably smoke another venison backstrap with an anise/licorice rub. Gonna be some good stuff.
Radar looks good, must be in the air, not here on the ground in richmond…right now radar shows nice snow in bowling green, but looking at cam…it’s not doing much if at all.
CANT help it, alot like my bengals…looks good on paper, not very good results!!!!
Berea reporting in. Some large floaty flakes, then intermittent sunshine and a small temp spike, now back to no precipitation. Despite what the WKYT radar indicated, it has not rained a drop here since 7 A.M.
I’ve seen worse starts, let’s keep the momentum going.
I haven’t seen any specific mention of how this system impacts traffic for Lexington area.
Will there be bands hitting during rush hour?
Kinda, sorta, important for the viewing area.
CB stopped posting kymesonet maps, but according to them, all 1.5m temps right now are between 33-36…and some going up.
That is because the moisture is now moving in 😉
Graupel falling southern Jefferson County in Louisville
Nothing happening here yet, but the day looks an awful like like a winter day. Its just missing one thing! 🙂
Freezing temps 😉
Little rain mix in knott co this morning. Sun now out.
This winter has flat out stunk! I know we still have another month left of winter but I’ve just about given up on any big snows around here. The Ky Snowdome is alive and well people!
