Good snowy Friday evening, folks. Our overachieving band of moderate to heavy snow continues to work across Kentucky and is putting down a thumping snowfall. I’ve already had reports of 1″-3″ snows from the Lexington metro southwest along the Bluegrass Parkway and more is on the way. Many roads are snow covered in these areas.
It’s possible to get some isolated 4″ or 5″ reports before all is said and done. The favored corridor for heavy snowfall continues to run from southwest to northeast in the areas I have been highlighting for the past few days. I don’t have time to make a new map for you, but you get the overall idea.
For our rainy friends in southeastern Kentucky… a switch to snow will take place later tonight with another band impacting your area early Saturday.
Track away and keep the reports coming…

Thanks Chris but I don’t think we could pay snow to fall in this area! But we always get the rain! Gonna have to figure out a way to build a big rain man,(maybe out of mud?)
A agree we don’t have no problem getting rain here in eastern ky I would move but I think the rain would follow me
Mud man. I will supply the mud and the salt we can toss in that Knox County has wasted.
Hoping SEKY sees more than cold rain. SO frustrating seeing no snow!
Surprised Bullitt and Spencer Counties haven’t been put under an advisory. I have 2 inches at my house with a moderate wet snow falling.
Overachiever is right. Heavy snow in the Metro. It’s very nice !
Snow done over Hartland neighborhood – not a lick of snow in the past hour plus.
Meant snow “dome” : )
if the radar trends continue
I could see Louisville getting a couple inches or more.
Roads are bad in nelson county. Wreck has traffic stopped on Louisville Road. Not a single plow or salt truck out.
Once again we will have to be happy with the consolation prize of rain. Played out as expected several days ago.
Yea I think jackson always knows we are getting the rain and not snow
Nice snow falling in Frankfort, one inch plus on the ground!
Congrats river counties, in stealing our snow once again! lol That’s quite alright as we would rather have cold rain anyway. 🙂
Just drove from Sadieville to Lexington . Was snowing so hard could bearly see the road (75) and the flakes were the size of half dollars ! When I crossed the fayette county line the snow got lighter and lighter and by the time I got home ( tates Creek area) it had almost stopped and looked like a mix of rain and snow and 34 degrees . Hey at least I got to see some real snow like the old days.
About an inch of snow now in my part of Lexington! The snow has decreased in intensity the past hour and looking at the radar trends, a dry tongue is trying to take place and you can see a back and forth battle. PLEASE don’t allow the dreaded dry slot take over, you can do it snow!
I am very surprised in how this has turned out so far, the roads are NASTY here and even circle road is covered in snow with people driving 20-30mph!
About a half an inch of rain here. Its really the only thing we measure here anymore.
1.2″ in NE Louisville so far…
Ironically, the ONLY weather station saying parts of Louisville could get up to 2″ is the one usually going against the grind for snowfall totals (WDRB FOX41).
All others are saying a Trace to 1/2″ or dusting to 1″.
I guess they are going with the idea it couldn’t be more if the NWS doesn’t issue advisories. lol….like CB said “act of congress”
It was pouring the rain in Irvine about 5 minutes ago now it is a very fine snow that’s falling. We all know about Kentucky weather!
I live far western side of ky nothing going on here. May get our share of snow before daybreak.
I thought the track was further south, so north and central KY was getting nothing and SEKY would see snow?? All we have in SEKY is a cold nasty rain!! Will SEKY see any accumulating snowfall?
To answer your question, nope, same ole 6 & 7 every winter. Temps fell to 37 about an hour ago and low and behold, the temperature here has just risen back to 40. This beginning to be quite comical!
Hope everyone who wants some snow gets at least some. Here in NEKY we are at 34 with a rain/snow mix. Nothing is sticking, just messy, cold rain falling with some big snowflakes falling every now & then. So good to hear some places already have a couple of inches and more coming down. I’m happy for ya! If you have to travel, please be careful out there.
I’m seeing reports of 4.5 inches of snow in Hardin County KY (E-Town).
2 inches in southeast Jefferson County of Louisville and still accumulating. Score one for the new GFS. NAM = fail.
very true…the new GFS did really well with the snow totals.
NAM, not so much.
yeah southwest Jefferson County
is going to be the County winner this time.
I heard vine Grove has nearly 4 inches
not too far from you guys
EPIC WIN for south of the river- if little to no snow is what the models said 😉
Congrats to all you guys getting snow. Rain in lee co. I watch with envy.
Just went out to pick up some dinner in Lex. Snow coming down pretty good. Main roads are slushy and slippery, side roads are snow covered and pretty bad. Don’t think the city did much to get ready for this one.
Knox county prepared for it 3 days ago. The sad thing is its all washed away by rain.
This sux. Unlike most people I actually like snow. To bad we can’t get any in southern Laurel Co. Rain, rain, rain…
Measured 4.75 inches now in Cecilia close to Howe Valley in Hardin County. And still snowing hard.
Close to .25″ here (if round up). You will have 5″ if you take ours 🙂 Winning!
Here in northwest Lexington (Leestown Rd) it’s snowing pretty good and has been for a while. First it was really heavy, then got lighter, and now picking up again. Everything is covered! I’m REALLY surprised honestly!
Whoop! Whoop! The transition in Richmond from rain to rain is happening as I type! (NOT a typo.)
Yep, sucks being south of the river. Go past the river on 75 and winter wonderland in Lexington (so to speak) and ditto for Winchester- once you cross the river past Boonseborough.
KENTUCKY WINTER WEATHER SUCKS. Wheh! fell better now 🙂
fell feel whatever
Kind of like when I loved in London (the other London), never go south of the river.
Coming down hard up here on the ridge in Greenup…over an inch already and cooold
Snow total is up to 3.5 inches in Spencer Co. KY. This is as of 8:30 p.m. with moderate snow continuing to fall.
Everything covered on my side of Lexington near Ashland. Been out walking the dog since five. Bands of heavy snow keep working through. Too bad the ground is so warm, otherwise we would have a decent snow on our hand. As is a lot is melting. That being said, it is one of those absolutely gorgeous snows sticking to every little twig. Silent movement under all the streetlights. Side roads are covered. It is beautiful, and I needed a little bit of beauty. Hopefully it sticks around a little while!
Funny! My wife is in Winchester and sent me a picture of it coming down hard with about 2″ on the ground. She is worried about the trip home and does not believe me not the same here. I told her get to the river and she will be safe from the snow.
South of the river is the protector of all things snow! Kazaaamamm!
Roads don’t seem that bad.
Snowing in Bowling Green very hard. At least an inch. That’s way south of the river
Not the same topography issues nor same area of usual misses. Channeling Dr. Evil: There is a freakkkn’ dooome over the Richmond/Berea area. Probably reenforced with lasers and hot lava.
My wife’s folks in Bowling Green also reported snow at a decent clip, although mainly sticking to the g*r*a*s*s and not so much to the roads at this point.
Nashville has been all rain until about an hour ago; now a rain/snow mix, perhaps a little sleet a while ago.
Yea – but the sun will be out tomorrow and temps in the 40s based on the forecast……but I don’t care, at least it’s snowing and it’s beautiful 😀
I don’t need no pretty snow- just the suds from my Buds 🙂
2.5″ in western Franklin county. Still snowing hard.
Close to an inch in Middlesboro…of rain that is…
Winning!
That made me laugh! The “winning” part struck me funny.
Heavy rain still in Huntington WV. It is amazing it rains here at 33 or 32 degrees other places get snow at 34 or 35.
I cant believe someone actually had the nerve to comment on Chris’s Facebook page that he blew the forecast! I mean he was the only one talking about inches of snow for most of the people getting snow now several days in advance!
The sharp cut off is a killer, so after many events missing people can get frustrated in spite of the forecast not being wrong.
The models had Richmond and Berea in the center of activity, but as usual very wrong for this area. The models sucks for snow around here. Is what it is.
That river thing is weird…….Since you’ve been mentioning it on the blog for years, it does seem more often than not that it stops at the river…but that doesn’t always happen. There were a few times I think south lex and richmond got more snow than my area in northwest lex
A few clippers behaved that way with some heavier bands.
Still snowing in Lawrenceburg, with a good looking radar…..close to 2″ so far….
As of 11:15…..3″ in L’burg…….outside looks like a picture postcard….
Nothing but rain in knott co. Looking at radar be lucky to see a festive flake
Gotta be at least 2-3 inches here in Bardstown. Roads are bad outside the city. Wife was stopped from an accident for 2 hours while the roads got worse and worse. I like the snow, but not when my wife is out in it.
Your wife was stuck on 245 by chance?
No on louisville road. Wrecks on BOTH ways into Bardstown. Its crazy out there.
I can’t believe Greenup isn’t under an advisory yet
I spoke too soon…under one now lol
I actually enjoy the rain….Yippee..Don’t have to have a team of Iditarod dogs to get be off this stinking hill…When you get older you will understand..
SEKY has been left out for two winters now. Hopefully February can bust the streak. The news was talking about no measurable snow in Lexington for 66 days, yet we have not had snow in SEKY since the less than 5 inch total that we received in the winter of 2013-2014.
not had a 5 inch snow here since feb storm in 2012 here in northern clay county. southern clay had a nice storm last year but the sharp cut off left my area of clay county with rain. i got a inch and half next day after cold air finally turned the rain to snow, and fit the wet ground.
felt like ive been left out of much snowfall since i came home from texas in novemeber 2012.
…we need a downtown richmond cam :)…
Unfortunately there’s a reason you don’t have one. 🙁
We have close to 3″ in Shelbyville and no Winter Weather Advisory! Even Spencer County to the south of us isn’t under an advisory. Roads are partially snow covered as well as the snow continues to come down.
Oh yeah! We now have snow covered roads, 1 inch on the ground, and more snow on the way. Yes, it will melt tomorrow, but it’s here now, so get a good look, or get up early and take a walk or build a snowman, make snow cream; just enjoy.
Depends on where you are at. The foks in the southern part going on two winters now with very little snow fall.
I have given up hope for snow in my area…still rain here! Any snow chances in the future for SEKY?
If you don’t have good gloves or mittens and a scarf, you have next week to get that taken care of. Chris will fill you all in with the details soon I am sure.
I hear it’s gonna get down right cold
Festive snow in north Richmond. Not much but it looks nice coming down.
2-2 1/2 inches in Nicholas Co and still coming down! It’s a heavy snow and providing nice cover everywhere. May get to go sledding tomorrow with the grandkids!
We are up to 4″ here. It is still snowing but it is starting to slow down.
5″ on the ground in Georgetown and still coming down hard.
I’m not sure about the river thing. I live right ON the Kentucky River–like it is 100 yards below my property in Woodford County. I technically am on the North side of the river. We tend to get more snow than Lexington. I had a hard time getting up my driveway this evening.
Id say we have close to 4 inches here in Bardstown and still snowing.
about 4in. In Frankort, hope better results for next storm Se KY
Thanks Todd but that is almost certainly not going to happen.
So much for the inch or less forecast from many of the local “weather” guys. I have about 3 to 4 inches out in Masterson Station. Will get back with you on official measurement but by eying it we have at the least 3 inches. I really get tired of the weather apps and warm biased meteorologist. Just because you believe in global warming doesn’t mean it will never snow. I am really disappointed with the NWS getting the winter weather advisory out late and also disappointed with the prerecorded forecast on the radio saying rain turning to snow after midnight. Even the radio host was saying 35 degrees with rain in Lexington earlier today when it was 34 with snow/ and sleet. LOOK OUTSIDE! This is really dangerous misinformation to drivers who rely on this information when all they have is the radio on the road. Anyway I love snow and yes it CAN snow in Lexington. #DEATHTOTHESNOWDOME !
once the backside gets in to SE/E KY there be 2-3 inches fall in sum localized areas that get in the swath.
I’m just amazed at the winter wonderland outside my house…..It’s beautiful and calm and if we get nothing else the rest of the season, I’m so glad we at least got this. This is a decent little snow..It’s got to be at least 3 inches, if not 4.
I agree entirely.
Looks like the only snow I’ll be seeing this winter is on the cams that are posted. Thought moving to the KY/OH border would mean more snow, not less!
The snow band is falling apart as it crosses the border in WV, as expected. Congratulations to my fellow snow loving bloggers in Kentucky. I enjoy looking at all the pic’s and webcams of the snow. It is just boring looking at rain all the time Wayne Co WV.
Eastern/Southeastern Kentucky it looks like yours is coming.
Is that another band I see setting up behind the initial one?
i have 4.3 inches of snow here in mount washington in bullitt county. snow has ended but was really intense for several hours. don’t worry i have afeeling everyone will see snow before february is done. big weather changes on the way. hats off to chris and kentuckyweather center…
No snow here in Indy.
Officially 4.25-4.5 inches in the Masterson Station area. Awesome!
