Good Sunday afternoon, gang. A clipper is diving into the bluegrass state and will zip across the state tonight. This will bring rain into our region into the evening. That rain will then change to a period of snow tonight into Monday. This means some slick travel could develop in time for the morning rush hour.
The change from rain to snow will first happen in the west and north into this evening. That change will then slowly work toward the east and southeast overnight into Monday morning. The GFS is trying to show a small enhanced band of precipitation just behind the departing low…
You can also see how moisture lingers across central and eastern Kentucky into Monday as the low bombs out to our east. That’s a setup that can put down some light accumulations of snow around here. The GFS is seeing that possibility…
As the light snow settles in and the clipper moves east, temps will quickly crash into the low and mid 20s. Let’s do the math here… wet roads followed by some light accumulating snow and temps in the 20s. That can sometimes be a nice recipe for icy roads to develop. We will see if that’s the case late tonight and early Monday.
Another little disturbance dives in from the northwest Monday night and early Tuesday and could bring a swath of light snow with it.
As we go through all this… the possibility of an historic blizzard is increasing across the northeast. Look at the snow forecast from the European for areas around NYC and Boston…
40mph-70mph winds with that? The NWS in Boston thinks it’s possible…
That would be unreal to experience. Out of curiosity, if I organized a blizzard chase one day… would any of you be interested in going?
Back to our weather… another clipper will move in here late Thursday into Friday with rain to light snow.
What happens with next weekend is still to be determined. Today’s model runs have backed off the big storm idea, but they can’t show something each and every day. The problem we’re seeing with them is how they handle energy coming out of the southwest. They are leaving that energy behind, missing the deep trough digging in from the northwest…
Of course, the models were doing something similar with the Friday storm and the one getting ready to slam the northeast. We still have plenty of time to watch it. Storm or not… that’s a lot of arctic air coming next weekend into the first week of February.
I have you set to do some clipper tracking…
I will update things again this evening. Take care.
cannot receive any significant snow from a clipper.
my this has been a long winter.
might get a little bit more lucky
in February.
I’m in on the blizzard chase CB!! Just say the word!
Hoping the flash freeze materializes enough for a snow day in Franklin County tomorrow.
I too am dreaming of a snow day Monday!!
Count this Fayette Co. teacher in too!
I would definitely go on a blizzard chase
I have never left a comment, but have followed Co’s blog for a long time. I am in Southern Indiana, just across the Ohio River from Louisville. We missed out on the Friday night snow and are still in a snow drought. I am hoping for a little snow here tonight! I would pay a decent amount of money to go on a blizzard chase!!!
I will be with you on that Blizzard Chase.
Nope
Heavy rain on radar. Not a drop falling at tates creek and manowar. Im out in the yard flying the drone taking pictures and video of the snowcover
Ooohhh…I like the idea of a blizzard chase!
I would love a snow day tomorrow.
Other People’s Snow ain’t for me. Fencetucky is like on of those little bus or train stops that gets skipped over time as far as big snows.
Whether or not the big storm that’s on the models for us next weekend actually develops, it’s wonderful to look at on the screen. That is a very, very good setup for us. Don’t jinx it.
What big storm??..There’s nothing showing up on the model’s for next weekend..As Chris said the energy is being held back..Needs to be kicked out early if we want something to develop..
We need the Men in Black to zap us with their pens each week to stay positive 🙂
Blizzard in the NE….who cares? I’m more concerned with getting the first bit of accumulating snow in my yard this year, though I’m confident that is not going to happen this time around and probably not this year at all.
I would definitely participate in a blizzard chase trip.
Packed and ready for that blizzard chase Chris.
Maybe TG will let us crash at his place.
I would definitely go on a blizzard chase, have been following this site for the last year and a half and really enjoy your forecasting. Hoping we get a big snow next weekend. I am ready for it!
Cheers
Blizzard chase?? Haven’t been on one of those since me & Ang went to the Dairy Queen in Mt. Pilot, sounds fun. Just a tip on the upcoming weekend storm……..Thelma Lou & I are planning another night on the town!
As usual were on the warm side and got rain falling.
Blizzard warnings.for NYC 20-30+ inches exp…wow!!!
See that moisture out in western Kentucky? This sucker is already digging its heels in. Hope those folks are ready up there in the northeast…this is gonna be interesting.
Not really, but I did drop by Dairy Queen yesterday for one of those Oreo birthday cake blizzards. Mmmmmm.
I’d love to go blizzard chasing…I mentioned taking a drive up there with the family but they said no. Probably a smart idea!
I am in a good spot here in Philadelphia. We are expected to get between 14-24 inches. Live about 35 miles from the blizzard warning line in NJ.
Wow…Show some pics for the one’s that forget what snow looks like..
Go get a cheese steak before the stuff hits! 🙂
You know winter is slow here when Chris talks about a blizzard in New England. And, no, I didn’t get ANY snow Friday night.
Yep, we are in OPS mode.
Sad that the only snow we can see is snow in other people’s yards
Then move to areas that are prone for that type of weather. The “World needs ditch diggers too, you know.”
Hey Connor, we’ll get a group of people together who want to move to a snow prone area. While we’re doing that, you arrange financing and new jobs for us upon our relocation. Great deal huh? I’m super excited!!!
p.s. definitely no soup for you!!!
Count me IN on the blizzard chase!
My son is taking my daughter back up to college today in Manhattan NY which is in New York City they left at 8am should be there by 9:30-10:00 tonight. My son will drop her off head to New Jersey and spend the night in hotel at New Jersey. Not real sure what happens from there I just don’t think he’ll be able to avoid the blizzard. Luckily he has his hotel booked for tonight and maybe for the next 2 days lol. They’ll both be fine her in her dorm room and him in the hotel I told both be careful and enjoy the possible historic blizzard. Being that said my wife is far from amused!!
NYIT?
She goes to LIM Laboratory Institute Merchandising. It’s a fashion design school/merchandising.
Count me in on the b-chase! Fly in ahead of the storm and out after! All get a good hotel at a strategic location. Pre-plan a few locations and then bam be ready to go out quick. You have my email and know if I say I am in will follow through for sure!
Make my blizzard a butterfinger and I’m in.
Oh check yes on blizzard chase.
I’m in for the snow chase/ severe weather chase/ flood chase let’s go!!!
What is the world coming to when we can’t even get cold air from a clipper? I’m used to southern storms bringing rain, but clipper rain may just be a new low.
Yeah, I remember the days of cold snowy clippers too. We don’t get snow around here though. This winter is beyond disappointing.
Anyone have an idea of how much accumulation between louisville and bardstown might occur? I don’t want my wife getting stuck in traffic like she did friday.
check out the wave 3 blog
they have a video about this event Brian hoke I guess that is his name does the commentating.
I’d like to experience what NVC and Boston are about to get, but I’m pretty sure I’ll have to move in order to do so.
As for our weather, I’d have bet big money we’d see 25 inches of snow this season in and around Louisville. The Pacific SST’s are as good as we could hope and basically mimic what we saw last seasons. Alas, nothing. The strong Pacific jet just didn’t relax in December and it gave us a lot of warm weather.
By my estimation, we have about three weeks left to see true winter. Once we get past Valentine’s Day, the sun angle is too high and snow just doesn’t stick around. In fact, last year the two weeks from Super Bowl Sunday until the 14th were our best of the winter.
The MJO remains in favorable territory and the Pacific SST’s look great. Now, we just have to see if some moisture gets into the game. It would help if there was some blocking showing, but that has been absent for much of the season.
Went out blizzard chasing in ’93 with a video cam filming from the back of a pick-up truck. The wind was so fierce that I could barely hold on to the camera and keep myself upright. I was younger then, so I don’t think I could do that now. Still, if a bunch of you go, keep the rest of us informed.
Any chance of a snow day for Harrison?
My sister and her husband just moved to Philly not too long ago. She’s been upset at their lack of snow this season after spending her whole life hearing how much snow they get in that area.
Earlier today, she texted me to gloat about the 14 – 24 inches predicted to fall in their neck of the woods over the next couple of days.
“Jealous” doesn’t even begin to do it justice for how I feel 🙁
I remember the blizzard in 93! We had just moved to KY from TN we had 32″ of snow. Most I’ve ever seen at one time and never seen that much at one time since. But I would be more than happy too!
We have three four seasons around here Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Mud. Winter sucks here.
Four not three four. Lol
this tonite in morn is going WRAPUP I can see couple inches in spots!!!
The front that is bringing some showers in here right now is starting to look like a big spinning wheel….starting to crank things up a notch?
Looks like an all rain event to me. Weather.gov is forecasting a low of 31 for the night. Since they have a history of being about 4 or 5 degrees to low, I’d say that my call for all rain is accurate. I could be wrong, though.
Chris or anyone knowledgeable …this big storm about to hit NY area, did the models predict this? How far out?
Definitely count me in too❄️⛄️! I’m moving further north just to get some winter….
