Good Sunday to one and all. It’s retro day on the blog as we take you back to a few decades to celebrate the wonderful 70s! Temps will certainly be all about going retro over the next few days with readings in the low 70s likely Sunday into Monday. Before we get to the actual weather… let’s take a stroll back to the days of bell bottoms and polyester…

Ok Ok… that’s enough of the 70s. Feel free to chime in with your 1970s thoughts… that is for those of you who were around back then! ![]()
To the weather we go…
The local weather is straight forward the next few days with readings in the low 70s. I think you have gotten the idea of that already.
All eyes from the national weather world will be on Ida down in the Gulf of Mexico. Ida will become a Hurricane and is a real threat to make landfall sometime over the next few days. Here is the latest from the National Hurricane Center…![[Image of 5-day forecast and coastal areas under a warning or a watch]](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT11/refresh/AL1109W5_NL_sm2+gif/024615W5_NL_sm.gif)
The models have been split on whether to take this storm ashore or let it meander around in the Gulf this week. Given the overall setup… I am becoming more of a fan of this thing making landfall instead of just wondering around. It is a very complicated setup in the gulf as we have a storm system that is ahead of Ida. You can see what I am talking about here…
The interaction between these two will be fun to watch over the next 24 hours and I suspect once this works itself out… the models will all get on the same page.
The actual impact on our weather is still not known… but my gut tells me we will see some moisture from all this mess before it’s said and done by the middle of the week. It will make for some fun following the next few days. ![]()
Coming up Monday… I will be taking a look at some winter thoughts and showing you guys some new data I am looking at.
You guys have to be stoked for that!!!!
Have a great Sunday everyone and I leave you with this thought…

Take care.

You forgot John Carpenter’s Halloween haha. Aside, glad about the warm weather.
Thanks chris! You’ve always been such a big tease when it comes to winter weather outlooks! I can’t wait to hear your opinions. After all, it’s nice to hear from other forcasters, but you’re our weather dude! It’s not a winter weather forcast until we hear it from you!
By the way, some of the models show the moisture from Ida missing most of Ky altogther.
could chris’s winter outlook go 70’s (76-77),(77-78) on us as well?
The pattern over the next week or so looks very mild to normal for this time of year, of course i am just a weenie what do i know, i do know that if we need a mild november like november 2000 to get a december 2000 repeat then i am more than ok with that!!! i was 10 years old then and had just started following weather and built my first igloo in the december 4, 2000 snow event which i measured 4” at my house, my parents remind me often of that first snowstorm that i got excited about because my obcession with powpow was just begining! i side tracked but december 17 to like jan 3 or 4 of 2001 for like near 3 weeks lexington was below 32 i believe.
Thanks for the memories….(oh wait, that was Bob Hope, wasn’t it?) 😉 Anyway, what a beautiful day yesterday was! Wow! Today looks good, and so does tomorrow….indian summer actually has been ere this year!
Chris, can’t wait to read your winter forecast! I a hoping that we can see some similarities to the winters of 76-77, and 77-78! Been a long time siince we have had a really good snow here! We are certainly due at some point this winter, but, you are the weather guru, so we will await your thoughts! In the meantime, get out and enjoy today!
Happy Sunday, everyone!
nw trend with hvy rains for tuesday continues.

Hi Patty. Hope all is well. It’s hard to get excited about winter with all the letdowns we have had over the past few years. We are due though which keeps me hanging on.
gfs falling into line with this as well. I could see how some of the highest elevations end this as a period of wet snow wednesday morning. Shane’s forecast area in WV may see some accumlations of wet snow.
Mountains could see some wet snow for sure… not so sure about the coal fields because the thickness isn’t looking quite optimal for snow. Also with us being in the 70’s this week the ground should be very warm, which would hurt accumulation.
I’m about ready to pull my golf clubs out it’s so beautiful outside today! However, can’t wait to hear your winter thoughts, Chris! Seen LOTS of Wooley worms this year, and I’m beginning to wonder if maybe it’s quantity rather than color that indicates we are in for a long, cold and snowy winter. Hmmmm… I’ll be tuning in tomorrow for sure. Have a great Sunday, folks!
I just looked at the 12z GFS Bufkit data for Beckley, Bluefield and Lewisburg. If it verifies a lot of people are going to wonder where all the snow comes from…
hmm…what about the partridge family, and nah-nu, nah-nu…LOL…from Mork and Mindy or was that from the early 80’s…lol…
shane…dont be saying stuff like that you’ll cause someone to go into cardiac-snowstorm arrest…lol…I will be glad to see the snow flying as well, but you have to admit it sure is a bee-u-tee-ful day out there today…
i was just listening to joe bastardi over at accuweather, and he seems to think that Ida will hit the coast around pensicola fl. or mobile Al. Then move east north east and become a powerful Nor’Easter!! with snow in the west Va. mnts. that could exceed 2ft.!!! wow. talk about extreme!!! this could be a very interesting winter to say the least…
Hi Mike M! I know what you mean. I was getting there though with October being as cool as it was. Right now I’m trying to get over the H1N1 bug! You know my luck, I caught it.
And the 18z’s want to throw Ida back out into the Atlantic after stalling out in the deep south. Ida continues to baffle the models.
I’ve seen a LOT of Wooley Worms, as well! I HOPE this means we are in for a snowy winter. I’ve seen the typical black and orange Wooley Worms with the black on either end, orange in the middle. I’ve also seen one all orange Wooley Worm. What this means is anyone’s guess! As I said, I’m wishing the sheer *prevalence* of the Worms is an indication of an upcoming cold and snowy winter.
The GFS 16 day plots have shown a tendency to warm for that period about 8-10 days from now and a little less precip. That is the time frame that has been advertised as a chance of some frozen precip. A few days ago it showed a chance of 1-4 ” of frozen. That 1 inch still could materialize but unlikely at this point. But now that is after looking at only the KDVK site which is Danville. http://wxweb.meteostar.com/sample/sample.shtml?text=KDVK
According to the ‘Folklore”(I think I’m right, but if anyone needs to correct me, feel free!), here’s the “Woolly Worm” deal:
All Orange/Brown: Very Mild Winter
Mainly Orange/Brn.w/Black on Ends-Mild Winter
Black ends, orange/brn middle: ‘Normal” winter(or half & half-whomever you talk to..?!)
Half black/half brn/orange:Moderate Winter(could be snowy/mild??!)
All Black: Cold & Snowy/Blustery/Wet
All White(“tannish”/blond color): Snow..Ice…Harsh Winter
I haven’t seen a LOT of worms this yr. in my neighborhood (not like usual…but then again, hubby’s been sick, so haven’t been able to take the mutt’s/kid’s walking around the block, where I usually see them..), but the few(about 9-10 or so) that I HAVE seen have all been solid black…kinda skinny, not so “woolly”??!- and I have seen 2 all White ones…
Plus…this year, there’s been an influx of those brown “house spiders”(the ones w/ the long legs that scamper real fast when you try to stomp them…lol)-I haven’t seen but maybe TWO in the past 5-6 yrs…??! My cats wake me up every night, pouncing/chasing/eating them, then ‘getting sick”-ew!?-usually on or near my bed….:(
Alo..Ticks…this year, maybe 3 or 4 seen the whole spring/summer…?! Usually whenever you go outside and they’re EVERYWHERE, that’s a sign of a mild Winter…?! (I think my Grandpa told me that once?!) I also noted not many bee’s or wasps, etc, this year as in summer’s past??! I saw ONE Bumblebee the whole summer…maybe 3-4 honeybee’s (nd our backyard is full of Clover, soooo..?!)-one hornet the other day when I mowed the yard, and still not sure it was a hornet…(he sure chased me, tho!)
I think this will be a GREAT Winter…I’m predicting our first ‘snow'(flurries, whatever..) around Nov 22-24, give or take a day…??!-I’m probably wrong, but, hey…?!;)- gotta have HOPE, right?!;)
Hey Chris your doing a great job and miss seeing you on wkyt… Can anyone give their thoughts on the upcoming weekend forecast for maybe around the Hopkinsville area as I am finally getting to go hunting. Was wondering what the weather wil be like so I know what to pack and if the deer might be moving. Any thoughts would be helpful!! Thanks everyone and keep up the great work Chris!!!
