Good Thursday everyone. This has been the most incredible run of wild temperatures I can ever remember around here and we aren’t through yet. We touch on the crazy temps, take a look at where we go from here and show you a busy tropics.
Today will make 4 in a row with record low high temps across parts of the state as temps head into the low to mid 60s across the central and east. Normal highs are in the low 80s for this time of year and this cool spell comes on the heels of a record setting heat wave that got September started off. This is an unprecedented cool pattern for so early in the season.
Really think about this for a second… we go from setting record highs in the upper 90s and low 100s for three straight days to a streak of 4 straight with setting record low high temps. All of this in the SAME week! Impressive is an understatement for this extreme temp pattern.
Where do we go from here? The headlines provide some answers…
– Today will feature the upper level low spinning across the Ohio Valley with more clouds and scattered showers. Highs will be back in the low and mid 60s for many with the west into the 70s with some sunshine.
– Friday will see us TRYING to come out of this nasty weather with a few more rays of sun poking through the clouds. This instability will try to fire up some afternoon or evening shower and thunderstorm action. Highs should range from near 70 in the north and east to upper 70s west.
– The weekend will continue to see this upper level low weakening out. Saturday will still have the chance to crank up some scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon hours as temps return to the low and mid 70s. Sunday should see a mix of sun and clouds as temps continue to warm into the mid and upper 70s. The west will see some low 80s over the weekend.
– The weather for early next week looks similar to Sunday.
– A cold front arrives on the scene from the north on Tuesday into Wednesday with an increase in showers and thunderstorms. This front may also usher in another bout of cooler than normal temps.
You can see this well on the GFS temp departure map for next Thursday…
The GFS Ensembles are pointing in the same direction…
We will also be watching all the action in the tropics into next week as this may play a part on the overall weather patten across North America. There are now three named storms to keep an eye on…

Time for our favorite part of the blog… the daily dose of tracking toys. ![]()

Thanks Chris for all you do. Come on white stuff!! 🙂
Nate needs to head for Texas and put out those fires.
clocking in.
I think Nate will head to Mexico and miss Texas. Seems to be the norm with tropical systems in that part of the Bay of Campeche.
Looks like it will not make 61 again today in Lexington. The only other time Lexington has seen 3 straight days of 61 or less for highs in September was 1975. Then it was six straight days, but it was in late September. I would say the cool maximums are really unprecedented for this early in the season.
Despite the early heat, could we be headed for a “Top 10” coldest September month?
If so, I would love it. On four days of not running any heat or a/c and being comfortable in the house. That rocks!
good morning from the town of wayne, wva. it is 11:55am under a very ominous looking sky but so far so good, no rain in the air or on radar. yesterdays shower at around 4pm brought the weekly rain fall total to 2.75 inches. we recieved .25 inches yesterday. it almost looks and feels like a mid fall day out there with the low clouds and the cool and dampish feel to the air. if you did not know any better you would think it was late october. except for a few hours where the temp tumbled into the 50s earlier tuesday morning, the temps have pretty well been in the 60 to 68 range all week since monday during the day and night. we will wait to see what the rest of the day decides to bring us now. thanks for your time and may god bless you and your family.
Listening to police scanners. Serious situation unfolding in Binghamton NY. Downtown ordered to evacuate. The Susquehanna is overflowing the flood wall. All-time record high water level for the city.
good afternoon from the town of wayne, wva. at 4:30pm the sky has brightened up a little today to allow a few peaks of sun to come through but it did not do much to help the stagnant temps that we have had going for us most of this week. currently under mostly cloudy skies the temp is 64 degrees after a high today of 67 degrees. this marks the 4th straight day with temps stuck in the 60s except for tuesday morning when the temp did drop into the upper 50s for a few hours. no additional rain has fallen so far today so the storm total for the week still stands at 2.75 inches. thanks for your time and may god bless you.

sorry for the double post!!
and all the missed spelled words!!
Thanks Chris for taking my idea to Twitter re: which weather you prefer, 100 and sun or 60 and … Jake helped inspire. 😉
Don’t count Nate out yet.. models still don’t know where that storm is headed.
Anyone else tired of seeing the rain clouds circling counterclockwise? On the plus side (for me, since I’m in SE KY), at least they’re now doing it in IN and OH, but still – weather coming from back over and over again from the east is both tiresome and weird.
Glad I could inspire. Lol.
