Good Friday to one and all. Today marks the day for some BIG changes. The weather side of it will bring showers and thunderstorms to most of the area today and the potential for record cold temps for the upcoming weekend. On the personal side… change takes your friendly weather dude back to WKYT to do an evening of weather!
Let’s start with today’s weather and move ahead. As mentioned… showers and storms will be ongoing across most of the state to start the day and this will continue on and off into the afternoon hours with a gradual decrease in coverage from west to east late. With a good amount of juice and a cold front moving through… locally heavy rains will be possible with some areas picking up an inch or so of rains. You can track the showers and storms here…
That takes us to the weekend and something we have been locked on for more than a week. It was the middle of LAST week we were posting runs of the 10 day Canadian Model showing a huge shot of Summer chill moving in for this coming weekend. We said at the time the pattern was favorable and sure enough… here we are talking about the chance of record cool temps.
How cool can it get? Here are a couple temp maps from the NAM…
The numbers you see there are from the earlier run of the NAM… the newest overnight run was actually a few degrees colder! Needless to say record or near record chill is coming to much of the region in the heart of summer. Record low highs for Saturday are in the low to mid 70s in many areas and those will LIKELY fall as some areas have a hard time getting to 70 because of clouds and spotty showers. Record lows for Sunday Morning are in the low and mid 50s and those are in serious jeopardy as well. We do have to clear the skies out at night for that to happen, though.
This continues to be one amazing weather pattern for much of the country and is one that will be remembered for a long, long time. If you are looking for a year that is matching this one in a number of areas. 1976 is at the top of the list right now.
How does the rest of the forecast look? Let’s ask the 5 day…
If we look farther down the road into next week… we find temps returning to the low to mid 80s for a few days. Humidity levels will increase too and this will lead to some showers and storms by mid week. Just as temps try to get to normal… we have to watch for another big dip in the jet stream to bring the chance for more below normal temps. The European Model shows this quite nicely…
Sunday July 26th
That’s all I have for you today. I hope you guys tune in to see me tonight on WKYT. I will be doing all the showers starting at 5 and going through 11. Don’t forgot about Fox at 10!
Have a great day and take care.
Bust out the jackets for the mornings this weekend, it’s going to be down right chilly for July.
Rain, thunder and lightning here in Lexington for about 10 min bring on the fall temps
You’ll be doing all the “SHOWERS” lol or SHOWS lol Got rain on the brain lol 🙂
Chelle, that caught my eye too. Chris will be doing all the “showers” from 5 to 11, and don’t forget about FOX! What is going on down at WKYT??? 🙂
The news last night advertised Chris’ return while saying T.G. was back in the hospital. I hope he’s doing better today. Get well T.G.
The thunder woke me up at 4:45. That’s okay. A wet summer is way better than a dry summer. Bring on the chill.
Love seeing the rain this morning. Grass was starting to go brown.
intresting to note as well is that 76-77 is a potential analog year for the 09-10 winter.
Thanks for the reminder Chris, I had forgotten about Fox @ 10 tonight. TG back in the hospital? That doesn’t sound good. Prayers and best wishes for his full and speedy recovery.
Now on to this summer that isn’t. The last time this happened was the summer of `76? What sort of winter did we have after the coolish/cold summer? Anyone remember? I seem to recall a very snowy winter in Western KY around that time but don’t remember the exact year. Just whe you think you’ve lived long enough to begin to understand KY weather…..:)
Safe trip to and from Chris.
They’ll take good care of TG in the hospital. Bless his heart. It’s going to take some time, but he’ll get better.
TG, you are still in my heart and prayers.
Chris, I’ll be watching tonight for sure!
Can’t wait to see Chris…not sure if I’ll be home but have set to dvr.
Prayers go out to TG, sure hope he is doing ok!
’76 was a snowy winter I believe…if I am remembering correctly. We had to dig a path to the smoke house for wood and coal and the snow bank was taller than me…of course I was 8…lol
CB I am more than ready for winter, if we could even get half of a late 70s winter in here I’d be thrilled! 21.5” last season was good but my thirst for blizzards is going to take me to the san juans or alaska range I need TONS of snow with wild west views!
An interesting bit of trivia about tomorrow’s date is the fact that July 18th, by the record books, is the only date to never have a high temperature below 75°F in Lexington. Looks like that record will fall by the wayside tomorrow! Let’s hope this cool weather is harbinger of things to come for the winter, and that it ends up being a late 70’s type winter and not like 2004 around here!
I was pondering on the same thing, and we old-(ER) folk..LOL.. all remember what that Winter was like…Hmmmm..
Just saw Chris’ twitter update. Glad he’s seeing a few more days at KYT, but hate it for poor TG. Prayers still heading in his direction.
OK I have an outdoor wedding scheduled for 8 with pictures to begin outside at 5. Will we make it? Help!!
Where at?
I had heard TG was back in the hospital. Prayers go out to him and his family. How wonderful you are able to help out and stay a little longer. You’re the tops, CB!!!
I can’t remember those winters so please fill me in!! Are you saying big snows possible???
I was a senior in high school in Lexington 76-77. We had more snow than usual that winter, but the winter was really known for the extended cold. We went over thirty days without the temps getting above freezing. We had a big snow on Super Bowl Sunday, and the ground stayed white until March. We did not go to school in January and February due to the energy crisis. The next year,77-78, was the “mother of all winters,” the stuff of legend.
Lots of snow is great, but 30 days below freezing?! Ugh, I want no part of that.
I rememeber that winter well! We missed so many days of school that year that they made up packets of work to do at home. It was a winter to remember.
Chris is on TV (5 pm). Woo-hoo!!!!!!
I’m watching, Chris. Please stay forever!
Get well soon, TG. Prayers are still going up for you, my friend, for your speedy recovery.
Where did your hair go? lol.
Richmond. I think we are ok now. I have had a lot to do and just now getting free to look at the weather again. It is beautiful but windy.
CB It looked so natural to see you on WKYT. I agree with Char, can you stay forever? TG, prayers are being sent your way. Get well soon. Thanks Chris for everything you do.
Chris, glad to see you back home on 27 tonight. You and everyone else look so happy to be on together. It’s like the good ole days seeing you on.
I wish they would do that now instead of making us go all summer!
I couldn’t tell you what the winters were like those years in E. KY., but here in Nelson Co/Bardstown…WOW!!! :)- I remember being out of school..oh, golly??!- I know we went bck to school after Christmas break-one day-then it snowed, and I don’t think we saw the classroom until about the first part of March???! It was one major snowstorm after another…both ’77-78 winters?! The reason I recall 77 is because our good friend of the family & neighbor was stricken w/ a Brain Tumor this one morning when there was like nearly 16-20″ of snow-the EMS couldn’t get up the hill to her home (they lived on a little “back road” just barely up the road from us?!), and her husband called my Grandpa to bring his IH “Scout” (that thing could GO ANYWHERE!) so that he could push the ambulance up their steep hill, then push them back up & out the road, as they’d gotten stuck trying to climb the hill to their home to get her…(btw: said niehgbor had surgery & survived the tumor, and died of nat. causes a couple yrs. ago @ age 87…) I would sit @ listen to either the local OR the Lex. AM station in the afternoons, awaiting that blessed “No School Tomorrow in…..” announcements! LOL!
It’s been a loooonnng time since we had a Winter like those…and believe me, I am SO HOPING for one of them this coming winter!:) Seriously! 🙂
The business I’m in felt a massive lost with the passing of Walter Cronkite. He was before my time, but he set a real standard in the journalism industry. God rest his soul.
Glad you’re getting to visit with TG.
Tell him we all said hi and to get well soon.
Oh, wow, it’s so good having you back, CB! Please don’t leave again. You and TG make a great weather duo!
Looks like I got home from Colorado just in time to see Chris back on the TV…what a nice surprise. Also looks like I brought back the cool weather from the mountains a well.
I am glad to see you back on WKYT. It really does suit you better IMO. But you gotta go where Chris feels the most comfortable. WKYT is reminded today on what a great asset they lost regular access too.
Just my luck, I leave to go to Sevierville for a few days and Chris comes. Good luck to T.G. and please stay a couple of weeks Chris so I can see you when I get back in a week.
Your soo vain…you probably think this weather is about you, bout you…
Chris, you look great my friend! It is nice to see you on the air. Please give our best to TG.
On 2nd look…maybe its much more blonde than before.
TG is a great weatherman but WKYT needs to bring you back to the station and back to this wonderful state.Chris Bailey is the man when it comes to weather.
Chris,Can you make a prediction for the weather this winter that is connected to this weird summer?
