Good Thursday folks and welcome to a day of Summer! Today could easily be the hottest day of July… not that that says a whole heck of a lot considering how cool the month has been. Is this the day someone sees a 90 degree on the ol thermometer? If it doesn’t happen today… it may not.

Today’s “heat” is not the big story as the cold coming in for the weekend will take center stage as we will be seeing the potential for record cold across the region. That holds true for much of the midwest and Great Lakes states as well.

Before we get to the temps… southern Kentucky got hammered again Wednesday with more heavy rain producing showers and thunderstorms. Several areas picked up a couple inches of rain adding to their very wet week. Any morning showers or storms across the south will move out and most of the area will be dry today. With all the humidity around… there is the chance for a stray storm or two and you can track those here…

Most of the day and most of the state will be dry today. Speaking of dry… it is the bluegrass region of the state that is actually getting pretty dry and because of this… it’s the area that has a fighter’s chance of flirting with 90 today. Watch the temp battle with our updating map from Kentucky Mesonet…

Here is your latest 5 day forecast…

How does that grab ya? I thought so… Here is the breakdown…

1. Today will see temps in the mid and upper 80s with a shot at 90 in a few areas. A small threat for a shower or thunderstorm will be with us as well. The severe threat from the SPC from yesterday is no longer.

2. Friday features a wave of low pressure rolling up the Appalachian Mountains as a cold front moves through here. Combine the two and you get showers and some storms that can lead to some locally heavy rains. Winds should be rather gusty as well as temps stay in the 70s to near 80.

3. The cold front blasts through here Friday evening bringing some true summer chill. Lows by Saturday morning will be in the lower to mid 50s. Saturday will see clouds develop… it will be windy and we have a chance for a shower. Temps in the low 70s for highs may be the max that we can see. If the clouds are more widespread… forget about getting out of the 60s for highs.

4. Sunday will see highs again in the low 70s after a chilly start that MAY feature some upper 40s for lows. WOW!!! The same may go for Monday morning  too. We have to clear the skies out at night for temps to settle into those levels.

5. Records are in serious jeopardy this weekend!

6. Next week will feature temps warming back into the low and mid 80s by the middle and end of the week as the humidity levels surge! This will lead to a wetter pattern that is likely to take us through the rest of the month.

That’s all I have for you guys today. I want to say thanks for all the nice comments about me coming back to WKYT for a day tomorrow. I appreciate each of you more than you know. I was amazed that the Lexington Herald Leader had it splashed on the front page of their website all afternoon and evening Wednesday. Heck… we didn’t get it all worked out until around noon and they had a story on it by 1pm. hahaha That’s some scoop! But, I am looking forward to it and getting to see all my old friends once again.

Have a great day and take care everyone.
