Good Tuesday everyone. What a rain event we are seeing across much of central and eastern Kentucky. A slow moving cold front and the leftovers from Tropical Storm Lee continue to combine to produce heavy rains. This is a super slow mover that will keep rain around through the rest of the week and likely into the coming weekend.
We have all your tracking tools to follow the progress of the heavy rains. Before we get to that, here is a breakdown of how things look to play out.
– A swath of very heavy rains will be working across the eastern two-thirds of the state early today. This will continue to increase the threat for flash flooding as many areas should pick up another 1″-3″ of water.
– The rains will actually develop farther west as the day wears on as the center of “Lee” moves in from the south. We need to watch for a corridor of heavy rains developing on the western side of this system today into Wednesday.
– The low cuts off from the main flow and will hang around here into the coming weekend. This means a daily threat for showers and some thunderstorms.
– Temps will continue to run WELL BELOW normal during this time.
Time for some tracking…

Have a great Tuesday and take care.

I would ASSUME the worst drought Lexington has ever had (since records) would be 1930, with only 24.89 inches of precip that year. That’s NOT a lot at all (for here). I think for some areas of the plains that’s actually a normal annual rainfall.

looks like the heaviest band of rain is close to louisville area as of this writing. lot of breaks in the rain , and not as much coming out of tenn, coming towards eastern ky. that can be a good thing.
maybe nws saw something like this may happen, as why they cancelled the watch for most of eastern ky.
I sure wanted rain as of Sunday morning but now I’ve seen enough! At least it’s coming down at a very steady rate and there is no scary wind and lightning tagging along for the ride. Our horses have been running like wild things since the temps dropped. They love it. My little poodles…not so much. 🙂
Yes, 1930-31 is considered the worst drought to affect Kentucky followed by 1953-1954, and 1940-1941.
i live just out of the city limits of Flatwoods ky and my rain gauge is showing 4.3 inches of rain since abt 5:40 pm Sunday and 3.2 inches of that fell in abt an hours time on sunday. Very soggy here but we did need the rain. Curious to see how much more we will get here. We had drained our pool below the skimmer to get ready to winterize it and with this rain it is back to where it was before or even higher. lol guess we will have to drain it again. Stay safe!
good morning from the town of wayne, wva. at 9:40am the sky is rainy, albeit light rain, still rainy with a temp of 57 degrees. funny with the rain at how the temp has pretty well been steady for the past 36 hours within 5 or 6 degrees. a stiff nnw wind at 15 makes it feel like a mid fall day out there. so far since sunday at 4;30pm 2.5 inches of rain has fallen. 1 inch on sunday, .75 on monday, and so far .75 today. so the first call rain fall map for wayne that you put out on sunday looks great as of right now. thank you for your time and may god bless you and your family.
This is great snuggle weather 🙂
Well, as much rain as we got yesterday the ground seemed to handle it.. The creek next to my house is still running small and barely any puddles anywhere. It was getting REALLY dry around here.
And great chili weather! We had the first pot of chili of the season last night and man was it tasty! Perfect weather for it.
It is a perfect day for chili.
I’ve got mine cooking in the crockpot right now.
I’ve compiled a list of rainfall totals from various counties of eastern KY for the past two days.
These are from our dedicated folks at the CoCoRaHS network…
Casey – 4.53″
Boyd – 3.51″
Madison – 3.38″
Jackson – 3.20″
Wayne – 3.20″
I’ve got more, but you get the picture….
I am glad there are no major flooding problems yet. Actually, here in Magoffin County, the creek beside my house is not even running. If you go to the National Weather Service page in Jackson and look at the radar estimates for Magoffin County during the past 2 days, my area has only gotten between an inch to an inch and a half of rain (I’m in the light green). It is really weird, there has been lots of rain north, south, east and west, but we never got many of the good heavy showers. It rained all day Monday, but only a really light rain. We can have flooding problems here, so I don’t want a lot of rain, but I hope the creeks do get to running good, sometimes our fall weather can get dry. But anyway, thanks Chris for working so hard to keep us all updated, you have a wonderful website! Looking forward to your great winter forecast!
Wow, lets hope this isn’t the trend for precipitation this winter because it seems like some of the forecasts that were missed last year for EKY that did just the same. I don’t mind it missing us as long as its rain but snow is a different story LOL!!! The rain seems to be over here in EKY for now.
🙁 at Chris new tweet.
Has anyone seen the most recent winter weather forecast from Farmers’ Almanac…?
yea BAILEY saw weatherchannel mention that system. its cool watching low spin over ky right now. new development on border.
i just went and measured my rain in the cat litter bucket, and i got a little better then 2 and half inches of rain. still measuring with a same tape measure. i put the bucket outside in the yard night before last about midnight.
The Farmer’s Almanac has been so terribly off this year that I don’t even look at it for fun anymore. It hasn’t even been close. Usually, by chance it’ll hit a week here and there..but no dice so far in 2011.
In Lawrenceburg, we topped out at 100 on Saturday afternoon, and hit 55 this morning. 2.54″ of rain so far and falling. Wind N at 30 so far. To say we went polar opposite in 2 days would be an understatement.
Kingdom Come State Park about 10 miles from me reported over 7 inches of rain. wow!
I just saw that precip map over on nws Jackson website. Incredible cutoff .. 1.6 in parts of Breathitt and 6-7 inches just a county south!
Chris, just wanted to let you know that my rain gauge is showing nearly 2 inches of rain here in Somerset since about 4 yesterday afternoon til about 5:30 this afternoon. Prior to that, I would wager that we had at least another inch or so. (Other gauge was broken, and leaking. Had to buy a new one.) Anyway, we’ve had mostly steady rains, with some embedded heavier bouts.
Definitely a soaking rain.
