Good evening, gang. Kentucky is still staggering after being clobbered by one of the worst winter storms to ever hit the state. Flooding rains followed by 1-2 feet of snow all within a 24 hour period is about as bad as it can get around here. To top it all off… we have record cold likely tonight.
A deep snowpack and clearing skies will allow for temps top drop below freezing. Some of the coldest air ever recorded in March will be possible tonight…
In order to get that cold, we must keep the skies clear!
In the longer run… things are looking much better into the middle and end of next week. 60s?
I will have a full update ( if I can still function on no sleep) later tonight.
Take care
Thanks CB!
You were one of the very few last week calling for this NOT to be the beginning of spring. Nailed it! π
For folks thinking they can shovel in the morning, it will mainly be ice after the super cold. This snow is not like the fluffy stuff two weeks ago. Shovel now are be stuck. That or a jackhammer π
or be stuck…. North Madison ended up with 14″. I expected sleet to be more a factor, but of course was wrong.
I drink a toast to the Goat Busters who held their ground even when it started snowing. True grit! π
Hear, hear!
8 inches in my part of Richmond (near Lake Reba). Not bad, I’ll take it.
That’s only about five miles as the crow flies. That is a huge difference. Jeepers.
about 1/4 inch of ice under the shoveled snow… and we had about 1/2 inch of sleet as well. How ’bout you?
We went from rain to mix and then snow at about 645. We had over three inches when others in town or more south reported rain and sleet. That is a crazy sharp cut off.
I think that was it. We got in on the snow several hours after you.
I would have been a lot happier if he had been wrong. π
I learned from the last snow how hard the snow can get after it freezes.I had to take a hoe and a garden rake to break it up before I could attempt to shovel it.What I had put in piles would melt and refreeze then it was like hitting a rock.
Feeling lucky that we only got about an inch of sleet and about 6 inches of snow.I worked all day clearing the snow from my hill.Thin layer of ice but at least it will have a chance to melt easier once it warms up.
I really hope the snow lovers have been satisfied. If these two snowstorms don’t do it I don’t know what it would take.Looking forward to days above 32 degrees. Its already 18 on my thermometer.
Thank you Chris for getting the information out to people before the last minute.
Thanks CB. You are in the epicenter in central KY. If you need a break come down to Knox where it doesn’t like to snow as much.
Thanks, CB, for your tireless dedication. You really are the best!
Thanks, Chris, for all you do to keep us informed and safe. Hope you can get some sleep soon!
Hear, hear for our man of the hour … or in this case the season … Mr. Bailey! Try to get some well-deserved rest.
I know I am looking forward to those warmer temps next week. My students are getting cabin fever during the school day (whenever we are in school). π
You nailed it Chris! 16.5 inches here in greenup…unfortunately we have no electric :(….thanks for all you do
We came out really good in Somerset. Caught a huge dry slot before the transition that kept us from flooding and kept our snow totals way down. Got about 4 inches of snow with minimal flooding. It was worse in some form or another all around us. Still nailed our totals of 2-6 inches Chris. Bowel Movement kept shaving the totals cause the arctic air was slower to arrive but grossly underestimated the moisture. Funny to watch him play catch up.
Highs in the 60s? Looking forward to that! Thanks, Chris.
Well after getting 25 inches in Radcliff and shoveling all day long and my lower back needing traction I can honestly say that my 41 yr old body has had enough. This storm has left me speechless!
Quite the storm…unbelievable
For those out of the viewing area…
I believe at least some of the local (Lexington) stations stream their evening newscasts. Hereβs the wkyt link: http://www.wkyt.com/home/misc/3927621.html
Depending where you were in the bottom half of Madison, you received anywhere from 5 to 10, which is exactly as forecast. Hell, our rather large neighborhood was 6 on one end and 10 on mine.
Thankfully, the snow that fell was 80% powder, so the advertised wet snow was never an issue here. I’m still annoyed with the non-forecast freezing rain in place of sleet, and the large miss on the flooding impact but overall this was still a solid job on the event.
I’m enjoying the quick media blitz WKYT is doing with CB vs. the other local mets. Entertaining. Though, it is funny that these two storms came after he had completely given up on winter and wished as hard as he could for spring. Lesson learned, I hope. π
Madison Mesonet station however, needs some calibration. it’s sitting at FOUR degrees right now at 8pm. Every other station around us is 11 to 17. That -32 from the last cold snap is looking totally bogus now.
Even few major mfg. plants and county govt. offices shut down this time versus the Valentines Storm. Interesting. Toyota still laughs at these events.
Everyone stay safe and stay warm.
Oh no… I still want spring and have for a month. haha

I am a faithful reader and die-hard Chris Bailey fan, but have never posted. This blog, along with all the regular posters, has really taught me a lot. I remember reading Chris’s winter weather prediction months ago. He said we could have several double-digit snowfalls. I was really doubting his winter weather forecast prediction in January, then BAM! I don’t know how he does what he does, but he is very good at it and I am thankful we have him in central KY! Thank you, Chris!! Now lets get this warm up going and bring on spring…
Agreed. I have read his log since he was at wsaz in huntington wv. Wish he was still here. They called for us to get MAYBE 4 inches. We got 12. That’s not even in the same ballpark.
CB had us in 8-14 and even said he thought his numbers could be low. So my family prepared for that. Good thing because we have no power.
Thank you for keeping my family informed and safe.
I agree WSAZ and the other locals under estimated the amounts pretty bad. They had my area Putnam in the 3 to 6 yesterday evening. I ended up with almost 11. Chris had us in the 8 to 14 almost 24 hours earlier. That’s why I still follow his blog.
That’s called trying to eat their crow in little bites π They blew it with their outlooks several days out like all but CBs team in Lexington viewing area and then too stubborn to relent and look silly. They tried to have it both ways, but eagerly call others out. Such is the soap opera of the met bidness’. π
As much as I enjoy reading your updates I personally think you have earned a night off from another update. Get some rest and thanks for all you do.
Chris Bailey hit the bull’s eye on this one! Thank you!
March 15th is when im ready for spring. But been ready fot few weeks now.
Kudos, Chris. You nailed this one while the other guys were downplaying their forecast totals.
Get some sleep Chris, You rocked now go rest!
Since this blog started years ago on WKYT.COM, then Chris moved it to his own website, then Chris moved to Huntington, and we all kept following his thoughts, and now back to Lex. All those years of watching storms miss us (for the most part) we did get a few decent 3 to 6 inch ones of those years, but nothing huge….But this…….THIS?? Amazing! I feel like I’m in a parallel universe or something. Not only did the dome get busted, but so did the 1970s winters. Who woulda thought?
OH, and ADAM – about the 1998 storm….That same storm gave Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington deep snows. It came from the Atlantic moving east to west…So Cincy and Louisville recorded 2 day record snows out of that and KLEX didn’t? I distinctly remember that the majority of the very heavy deep snows fell well within 2 days, the snow “showers” that remained only added another inch or two…In fact….It started at around 10 pm that night or close to 11 pm, and it was heavy heavy heavy! The next day around noon, I walked ACROSS my yard to borrow a shovel from my neighbors and it was almost up to my waist!
Been reading this blog since the beginning, waiting for this event and now it’s come and gone. I suppose I’ll be right back here next winter hoping to top these last 2 weeks some how. Oh well, brI ng on spring and some golf.
Thanks Chris. At our house in Somerset we wound up with about 5 inches of snow with a pretty good layer of ice underneath. As much as I love the snow, daylight savings time begins this weekend so you talking about some much warmer weather makes me smile! Right on time, as usual. Get some rest, Chris. You and your weather team deserve it! Thanks for all you do. Hope everyone stays safe and warm tonight.
I got caught up in the snow and forgot all about daylight savings time coffeelady. Thanks for letting me know. It’s one of my favorite times of the year. Just wish it was a little warmer.
60’s woooohooooo
Shorty shorts
Just got back inside after taking the dog out for a late night bathroom trip. There was frozen fog clinging to the trees and a layer of fog in the low lying areas, rather eerie looking but beautiful at the same time. My temp in northern Jessamine is sitting at -1 already and it’s just a little past midnight, gonna be a cold one.
