Good Wednesday to one and all. Well… showers and storms really got cranking on Tuesday with widespread severe weather across the state. These storms were big time hail producers with some areas getting golf ball sized hail to go along with damaging winds. It looks like today will feature more of the same!
Tuesday was a good example of the state of the atmosphere around here… anytime it has even the slightest chance to rain or produce storms… it goes to the max! This continues to be a super charged pattern that is likely going to continue through much of the summer.
A front is slowly working it’s way into the region from the north and northwest and is providing the focusing mechanism for the showers and storms to go up. With a good supply of moisture around… we have to watch for the threat for flash flooding along with the threat for severe storms. This will especially be true as a wave of low pressure moves across the area later today into tonight. This will likely cause the rain and storms to become much more widespread. On Thursday… another low will develop along the front just to our south. This should keep the rain and storms cranking up… especially the farther south you live.
At any point today, severe thunderstorms will be possible and you can track all the boomers here…
The Storm Prediction Center has the entire area outlined for the potential for severe storms today. Here is a look at the latest radar, outlook and watches from the SPC…
The damaging wind threat will be much greater today than what we had Tuesday. The potential for a few supercell thunderstorms may try to get going as well. If they do… the threat for tornadoes will be on the increase.
I don’t want to forget about the flash flood threat as a general 1″-2″ of rain is likely to fall across the area through Thursday. Local amounts of 3″+ will be possible for areas getting repeat storm action. Here is the GFS rainfall forecast…

Holy Cow! My prayers were answered – it’s actually raining and I did hear a clap of thunder! Woo Hoo!
Rolo, it’s good seeing you post again! I don’t check in as often as I do during the winter and could have missed some of your posts, but when I have been here, I haven’t seen your comments as much and you’ve been missed! 🙂 I’ve also missed reading your thoughts about the Triple Crown races, too!
nothing but sun here
Im sorry Andy – we still have the whole day to get through! Maybe you will get something in a bit!
Really hard rain in Wilmore nearly all morning- still steadily coming down. Blinding downpours during peak of storm. Nice light cool breeze!
Question: Is this it for the day? Or is there more of a weather maker coming our way?
Sure we do. We got a thunderstorm last night with intense lightning and and thuderstorm earlier.
Oh- just answered my own question- should have thought to look at noaa.gov before asking! 🙂

There is a new MD out for Chris’ neck of the woods. The cold front is also farther south already than I expected. So maybe southern and southeastern KY will be where all the action is later today.
Several….lights were flickering too.

Thanks for the info guys. Thats my area as well. Lots of Thunder & Lightning and a little rain so far…
Hi everyone! We got a t-storm this morning about 7:30 here, with some heavy rain for a few minutes. Than a pretty good shower about 9 that lasted for about 10 minutes. Mostly cloudy skies all morning, but now the sun is coming out, and I will wager that we see some storms a little later.
Looks like Adair County is getting one cranking right now. Has red in it, so I am guessing heavy rains? If it heads east, we will see some here.
Rolo, great to see you posting again!
Parts of my area got in on the heavy hail yesterday afternoon, too. We had golf ball sized hail, and very heavy winds and rain in the county. It almost seemed to cut a path through the county, much like a tornado would. Where I was at, we got some thunder, and lightning, and a sprinkle. While up the road about a mile, they got the heavy stuff. A friend of mine got pictures. If she emails them to me, I will upload them to Chris.
Everyone keep an eye on things today. Chris, I know you will be right there with us, keeping us updated. One of these days, I will figure out how to tweet, and sign up to follow you!:D
