Good FRIDAY to one and all and welcome to an early start to the weekend. It has been a long week so I have dubbed today as part of the weekend just for the heck of it. ![]()
We have a couple of things to cover with this blog. The storms and heavy rain threat… chilly shot early next week and the bad past week to be living in a town called Kirksville.
We start with the weather today. Warm and humid conditions will be with us as temps hit the low to mid 80s. The combination of the high humidity levels and the afternoon heating will lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms… especially across the south and southeast. Locally heavy rains will be possible with these storms and you can follow their development on radar…
There is some good news with the weekend forecast in that the front moving through here Saturday looks like it has some giddy up to it and will not check up. That should help prevent low pressure from developing along the front keeping rainfall totals from potentially getting out of hand. Still… the front will spark numerous showers and storms across the entire region Saturday into Saturday night and will produce some heavy rains. Here is what the models are now spitting out over through Sunday morning…
That is still not good… but is a whole lot better than what they had been showing. Any area getting an inch or so of rain across southeastern Kentucky would certainly be prone to seeing possible flooding again. We will continue to monitor where the showers and storms set up over the next few days.
Behind the front comes a big time chill down. Highs will be cool in the low to mid 60s for Sunday and Monday… even with sunshine. By Monday morning… temps may reach the upper 30s and give some of the colder locations some light frost.
The rest of next week looks dry right now as temps surge toward the 80s for the end of the week into Memorial Day Weekend. We will need to watch for a sub tropical or tropical system trying to develop near Florida during this time as those bad boys can alter the overall pattern if they can crank. ![]()
It was one week ago today that a deadly tornado touched down in Madison County. The town of Kirksville was left beaten and battered. This past Wednesday, the town of Kirksville was hit again by a deadly twister. This time it was the town of Kirksville, Missouri. Here is some amazing video from a storm chaser…
WOW! Bart is one lucky dude after that close encounter!!!
I also found some good footage showing the damage from the “local” Kirksville…
Talk about an amazing weather event… deadly tornadoes striking the towns with the exact same name within a week of one another! I would love to go back and see if something like this has ever happened in the US. If it has… when? You may not be able to find where this has happened in the same year, let alone just a few days apart. Maybe some of you fellow weather geeks out there can do a little research on this. Hint Hint
Have a great Friday and I will update as needed. Take care.
Chris, just the namesake alone is enough to send chills down my spine. Is there some other kind of meaning here that we haven’t figured out yet?
Everyone enjoy their Friday..it should be decent across the board, spare the aforementioned storms in southeastern Kentucky.
=Aaron=
The folks doing the good surveying of the tornado damage missed some of the heaviest damage from the tornado. Take a look at the parking garage just to their left in the video, and also look at the houses that were destroyed at the end of highway 1295…including the area where the two deaths occurred. Those houses are completely demolished.
THe guy inside the parking garage at the time, from what I hear, was actually underneath a car, working on it, when the tornado passed through….the building still stands, but so does the car he was working on, and he himself. Pretty amazing stuff.
Morning Chris. Thanks for the update. At least the whole weekendis not going to be a total washout! Nice to know.
As far as the cooler weather and the possibilityof frost, I kind of knew it was coming…blackberries are blooming, and it thundered in February. My mother always told me that if it thundered in February, it would frost in May! (I have paid attention to that, and she was right! 😉 )
I only hope that the rain does not totally shut off now, and leave us high and dry once again all summer. But a few dry days will really be nice!
Have a GREAT Friday, everyone. Be careful out there, and come on down and see us for the boat races this weekend on Lake Cumberland! We’d love to have you!
That is really messed up!
I sure hope we don’t get anything subtropical or tropical heading up through the Gulf next week because if it happens that could mean trouble for the areas recovering from flooding. The Jet Stream next week looks to be off to our north, so if a tropical system rolls in it could stall out over the southeast. Something to keep an eye on for sure.
Sadly, the last few days when I’ve looked at GFS modeling…that’s what it looks like to me. A tropical disturbance moving in off the ocean…not a tropical storm, just a low pressure area that could bring rains.
WEll a severe thunderstorm warning was just issued for my county. From the looks of the radar, it is going to be here very shortly….nothing yet, just a dark cloud to the southwest, but it is headed this way….
Not surprised…it is a very humid 82 degrees here right now.
Yup, a lot of bigtime storms coming north out of TN.
Can anyone tell me how severe these storms coming out of TN are expected to be. I am home alone with three small children, all who are afraid of storms.
Well, that big mass of storms moving into Metcalfe and Monroe Counties is pretty nasty looking. I’d say that flash flooding and lightning will be the main threats. It’s slowly moving northeast…but this stuff is going to die in a few hours…
I doubt they will be like last weeks storms these look like your late spring summer garden variety type Tstorms but with all storms they can be bad
Thanks Andy, I can handle storms just not tornadoes.
Casey county next to get popped.. these are hail storms and flash flooding storms. Be careful…
Whew! That was a pretty good storm….at least, it was where I was! I had just left for lunch, and the storm didn’t actually GET here until after the warning had expired. Thought that was kind of funny….
We had quite a bit of wind, and very heavy rain. But there was a lot fo fierce cloud to ground lightning. And, of course, loud thunderclaps.
We had a pretty good gully washer, but it finally went on. Now, back to the southwest, it is looking dark again…hope this one holds off until I get home! Oh yeah, we lost power at work for a short time, too. But Andy is right…this was more your pop up type of storm, though it was a pretty stout one!
I have not seen or heard of any serious damage from it….
Wxman, come to think of it, the sky had a lot of yellow in it when I left work to go to lunch, when this thing was coming up. I didn’t see any hail, but I would about bet that someone did.

Just wanted everyone to know Tim made it through surgery today fine…he is sore, but doing good. thanks for all your prayers and thoughts…
Glad to hear Tim is doing well.
SPC issued a tornado watch for SW Ohio just across the river until 2AM.
Squall line in Illinois looks to me like it might sweep down through Kentucky later tonight.
I’m so glad to hear Tim is doing fine. Tell him, all his weather blogging friends are thinking of him. And Thank you for letting us know how he is doing. Keep us informed if you have the time.
I do think the line will hit parts of the state tonight, but I think heavy rain will be more of a concern than severe weather.
Tell Tim that I’m glad that the surgery is over and I’ll continue to pray for his quick recovery.
Glad to hear Tim made it through surgery and am praying for you guys. Tell him his weather buddies say hello.
Glad to hear Tim is doing alright! Wishing him a speedy recovery.
line not moving that fast either.
Wonderful! Hope the recovery period is very short with no pain!
