Good Thursday everyone. The wild weather we have been talking about for the past few days gets cranking out there today with the threat for severe thunderstorms across most of the state. We have that to talk about and the chance for snow next week! ![]()
Let’s start with the severe threat. We have a potent low developing today across the lower Mississippi Valley and this low will ride northward toward us this evening and overnight. Warm air will surge into the state today with temps heading into the 70s. Instability ahead of this low will be strongest across the deep south where a major outbreak of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes will be likely today. For us… the instability won’t be as great but will likely be strong enough to produce scattered severe thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening hours.
Here is the latest outlook from the Storm Prediction Center…
Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats with isolated tornadoes possible. Watch the clouds today as if we can get mostly sunny skies for much of the day… our severe weather threat will increase. You can track the storms here with radar…
As the low moves overhead of us tonight and early Friday… heavy rains and very gusty winds will be likely. Friday will see showers ending during the afternoon with temps only in the low 50s.
Saturday looks good as temps head toward the 60s under sunny skies. The next system will be rolling in late Sunday with increasing clouds and showers and thunderstorms developing. Temps ahead of the front will soar toward 70. Enjoy it because winter is going to be moving in quickly Sunday night and Monday morning. Temps will drop more than 30 degrees in just a few hours time as a wicked cold air outbreak moves in.
Early next week looks ugly and similar to a similar cold and snow shower outbreak that hit is during the same time back in 2007. Check out the GFS for Monday…
Morning
Evening
Those maps show widespread snow showers with temps struggling to get out of the 30s for highs Monday. Oh yeah… the model does TRY to put a little of the white stuff on the ground Monday…
Wow… does anyone else feel like crying? ![]()
Tuesday will see some snow showers and flurries trying to continue with temps again struggling to get into the 40s for highs.
GFS Tuesday Morning
With an early bloom to a lot of plants and trees taking place right now… we have to really be on guard for the possibility of a freeze next week. The best chance would come Wednesday morning as temps dip into the 20s. Brrrrrr!
The blog will be watching the severe weather threat and will update as needed through the day and will go live if needed so check back. Have a great Thursday and take care.

All these killing freezes in April each year…must be “global warming”!!
Hey, did y’all see the 5% Tornado area includes Louisville, Frankfort, E-town, Bowling Green, etc?? Wow…can’t wait to see the updated outlook at 9:00.
Good morning Chris, and Wxman. Nice to see that someone other than me is up and at it early! 😉
Thanks for the forecast update, Chris, but please tell the snow to go elsewhere! We don’t need it OR the freezing temps now. but, it always happens. Oh well…
Chris, or Wxman, do you guys think our severe chances will increase any, and if so, ballpark on when you think this stuff might decide to roll through here?
Well, got to get to work, will check in when I can. Chris, thanks for being there if and when the bad storms get here! I am glad to know you are watching the situation!
Man, why is spring having such a hard time getting into gear. Why are we having these winterish systems still out there causing havoc on everyone’s attempt to move on from winter. Grrrrr!! Hello, mother nature, you’re out of whack again as per usual
The IR satellite channel shows clear skies and full insolation across almost all of Kentucky and Tennessee this morning. Therefore instability should be higher here than what we had during the last system. The question is the track that the low will take. I think we have strong storms during late evening…
36.7 was the low this morning by 7:30 it was 39 and now its 52.8 what a warm up in just a few hrs
I have a feeling it might be a long weather day!
Be safe everyone.
Thanks for the reply, Wxman. I will keep and eye out. Just hope thay don’t get too bad!
I WANT SPRING AND WARM TEMPS!!! NOT hot, but warm. Too early for hot….but warm would be nice!;)
We had frost on all the rooftops this morning. It sure does warm up fast with this sun angle though!
same thing with the floods in fargo. global warming. that’s the easy line these days.
lake wind adv east today.
yup, full sunshine here the models had a lot of junk ahead of the low in terms of clouds and light rain but i’m not seeing it. the low track will be about the same as last time.
I’m with you coffeelady! I want spring weather not this snow stuff! I’m all for it in the WINTER but that season is gone! At least I was hoping. Well, I guess I’ll have to take Chris’ advice and enjoy my thursday! Off to walk!
Good Morning Chris and bloggers 🙂
I am going to take a weather spotters class on the 14th., down here at the library.Hopefully I will learn enough to be able to understand those maps alot better.Already 74* down here on the border and clear skies….so far so good.Have a nice day everyone!
As much as we hate to have this cold weather, it’s better than my friend in north Idaho has it, she emailed me this morning and said they got 6 MORE inches yesterday. Now, that’s screwy weather!
as I said come in and track those storms live at http://www.spotterchat.com its a awesome site for those people who like storm spotting etc
NOTE:
use the update version
also the guys over it are going to soon add rooms for JKL and LMK weather offices as well as MRX and PAH
That would be 6 MORE inches of SNOW! Sorry ’bout that.
NAM and GFS 12Z runs both take the low directly through Kentucky. This would drastically decrease the severe threat here. I expect the Slight Risk zone to be trimmed back in the next update.
Just as in these cases though, it goes both ways. I have a hard time with both sides, when its cold (OH, where’s “global warming, and the other side..nothing) and when its hot (nothing from one side and shouts from the other). UGH!
Clouds are here in Knox County has just recently happened and its breezy to just like you would expect ahead of a storm but radar looks good so i dunno
I hope you are right!
We are getting a lot of dark high clouds here in Corbin!
Lookin pretty scary outside.
NWS considering a Tornado Watch in the next couple of hrs. along the I-65 corridor/western KY.
It’s gotten awfully warm and humid here in Nelson Co.in the past hour. Took my dogs for a walk and don’t know who got hotter and worn out faster-me or them!?;)
spc update with increasing severe threat ahead of main line to our sw.

looks like Storms popping just to the SW of Knox
MItch, I was just looking at that line of storms in Tennessee. They are looking kind of wicked at this point. Are they going to roatae up our way? Or do you think they will rotate too far to our east? I really can’t tell at this point.
the couple of cells that started to the SW of knox went straight north if that helps any
Tornado Watch now issued for western kentucky
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/watch/ww0109.html
SPC has now put south of I-64 in a 10% risk foro Tornadoes.
Just had a very heavy storm move thru Bardstown, headed almost due N.
I relaly needed to find this info, thank God!
