Good Thursday everyone and thanks so much for stopping by the blog. Here we are on the 6th day of November and we have had one heck of a run of Indian Summer weather. Highs have been in the 70s for almost a week now but those days are quickly coming to an end.
Get set for a MAJOR pattern change and it is coming close to the time we said to expect it… toward the middle of the month. It may actually be a few days ahead of schedule… but who is counting? ![]()
We hit the low to mid 70s out there today under partly sunny skies. Winds will really crank up and this is BAD news for the forest fire situation across the area. We have DENSE SMOKE ADVISORIES out for parts of the state as several fires have popped up. One was a 350 acre blaze in Estill county and the pattern has been keeping the smoke hugging the ground. Today’s wind will help the smoke situation out some… but may act to increase the size of the blazes.
A cold front moves in later tonight into Friday. There won’t be a ton of moisture with it so only a broken line of showers moving through. A quarter to a half inch at most and if you see those amounts a big congratulations will be in order.
MUCH colder air will move in for the weekend. Highs Saturday will struggle to get out of the 40s with a mix of sun and clouds and breezy conditions.
A weak system may try to drop in Saturday night and Sunday and this may just enough moisture with it to produce a rain or snow shower during this time. Check out the GFS for Sunday morning…
That would certainly indicate the chance of a rain or snow shower. I think the chances are rather small at the moment… but it’s a chance nonetheless. Highs Sunday will be stuck in the 40s again.
Overall… we are heading into a stormy and cold pattern over the next week and this should carry us through the rest of the month. Another interesting storm will be developing quickly to our southwest late in the weekend into Monday. This one will take a farther south and east track than the current storm bringing a blizzard to the upper plains. In the short term… here is how I see the next week…
Let’s talk about that map for a moment. The first storm raging into the high plains is bringing about our THIRD Blizzard Warning to the country so far this fall. That’s pretty amazing. The second storm is one that is looking a bit more interesting as it is now forecast to take a farther southeastward track as cold high pressure builds in to the north of it. All of this may set the stage for an early season winter storm for areas just to our north and west. It is VERY early in the season to see something like this happen. Can Kentucky get in on some of this action? Possible but not likely. Can we get some wintry precip? You betcha! This may especially be the case when the precip moves in Monday and then again when it leaves late Wednesday. In between… a cold, soaking rain. Check out what the GFS is trying to do to us…
Monday Morning
Monday Evening
With such cold, dry air in place… there is a chance the precip could start out as a little sleet before changing to rain. That is certainly a long way from being etched in stone but is a trend to watch for in the coming days. The blog will continue to update this system with each post.
Beyond that… there is another storm that will roll our way by the end of next week into that following weekend and could bring more interesting forecast challenges.
Ok… I am done for now. Have a great Thursday and take care.

well hopefully some of that snow in the Northern Plains into Canada will lay down a good snow pack for us.
Michael S…..I agree. As long as that snow pack is in the north it could help keep our temps down later in the winter season. Our winters either have cold rain as precip or cold temps but not both at the same time. That snow pack may help keep our temps down lower for the precip to turn to snow! We can only hope!
Chris, I am loving these updates. Man I missed them. Getting really excited for winter 🙂 😉
Thanks Chris for the interesting update…what are the chances for snow on Thanksgiving?
This morning on WKYT, Todd said the last time we had this many 70 degree days in November was back in 1977. Bill said that turned into the worst winter in memory. So what do you think about that comparison, Chris???
Our trees are really dropping leaves so we have gutters to clean. Bring on the rain!!
This morning my weather forecaster said we have not had this many consecutive 70+ degree days in early November since 1977! Could this be a sign of winter to come?
Doesn’t appear to be an over-running event Tuesday…so no ice storm at least.
The comparison with ’77 is fun to talk about. I wouldn’t put any stock in it climatologically, but it’s fun to talk about.
Hi KP! Actually we have had several years with this many 70 degree November days.
2005- 7
2002- 6
1999- 8
1994- 6
1990- 7
1987- 7
1985- 6
1977- 7
1975- 8
1971- 8
Today will mark the 6th day of 70s for Lexington. While 1977 is on the list… is a far cry from the last time we had this many days in the 70s. 😉
Take care and have a good day!
Chris you are soooo on the ball. How did Wynter like treak or treating did dad get to go???????
Chris,
I’m a tropical weather guy, hence my love for summer. Any thoughts on the track of the Tropical Storm down in the Gulf? Any chance that could impact our weather in the next week or so….and how? Could be interesting if the temps are cold….

WELL IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR WHEN IT ALL STARTS TO HAPPEN……
I can see how life is going to become very busy for me from the 15th of November to the 1st of the year. We are going into a pattern where winter will come on strong and Eastern snow lovers will enjoy plenty of snow and wild weather. The NAO will be tanking negative after the 1st of the month and should stay on the negative side of things through December. For those new to this blog, the NAO is the North Atlantic Oscillation index. When the index goes negative, it usually means some sort of blocking is going on and storms tend to develop along the Eastern Seaboard. It can lead to snowstorms for the East, depending on if the amount of cold air. I am actually getting my snow blower out this weekend and getting it ready for the winter.

Chris has been saying this for a while, lets hope it all pans out so we all can get a SNOWSTORM this yr.
THis is why I choose Bailey for my forecasts… Kyt LOST HUGE when he left…. as the ole saying goes, the proof is in the pudding!!!…LOL…:)

AMEN!!!! We miss Chris. I was so hopeful when he was on WKYT a couple of weeks ago. Chris come back! Our weather needs you!
Thanks for the article and pics Tim! Did anyone happen to see the video of the severe storms that rolled through Oklahoma? There was so much hail on the ground that it looked like snow. There were pics of the wall cloud shown as it rolled through also. It was very scary looking!
I heard on the radio a little while ago that the Dakotas had 40 inches of snow and 80 m.p.h. winds. Wow! How in the world does the snow even land on the ground with the wind blowing like that. I can’t wait for Chris to let us in on the winter forecast. I hear that it’s going to be a cold, snowy winter.
hey chris!! seems like time is flying by. cant believe that its already almost winter 08. wow. its so sad not to see u on wkyt. i never watch it n e more. Well ok except when you are on there. ok on to weather. that is pretty cool. i took a trip to ny and saw the first flurries of the year. very exciting but too cold to walk in lol. i am excited for when we get our first snow. my dad was just telling me about the snowstorm going on in north dakota. im soo jealous. oh and im pretty close to estill county. We were driving through morehead and we saw and smelled smoke. it was weird and we were wondering what was going on…
Ever hear that story from your parents about how they had to walk to school in knee-deep snow? Problem is, back then their knees were much closer to the ground. They’d always follow that story up with, “Now Stop Your Complaining”.
During the past 24 hours there has been so much snow in the Black Hills of South Dakota that the snow is not only knee high, but waist high! No kidding, folks. The snow has come down at a rate of nearly 2 inches per hour since Wednesday night. At last count, Deadwood, S.D., (same place as the setting for the made for TV series) had received nearly 40 inches. Furthermore, winds have been gusting over hurricane force, making for very frightful conditions. Rest-assured your parents never walked to school in weather that bad

notice 2002 and 1977 our on the list both of winters came out winners for snow. things could shape a lot like 2002 for the month of nov and hopefully into dec where it turned cold and snowy quick.
the cold is coming is tim by the end of the month.
