Good Tuesday, everyone. This may be an historic week of weather across the commonwealth of Kentucky. Record high temps, heavy rain, thunderstorms and high winds will combine to make this Christmas an unforgettable one. This could go down as the warmest Christmas week on record around here.
Buckle up and let’s get after it.
Rain and thunderstorms will exit the region from southwest to northeast as the day wears on. Highs today could reach record levels in some areas if we can get some afternoon sunshine.
Additional rounds of showers and storms will fire up late tonight into Wednesday as winds really begin to crank. Highs Wednesday will reach the mid and upper 60s for many. Again, records may fall. Showers and thunderstorms will continue ahead of a cold front into Christmas Eve. Heavy amounts of rain are possible through this time. The Hi-Res NAM shows some local 4″ amounts…
Can we get some strong thunderstorms Wednesday into early Thursday? That’s a possibility and something we will have to watch closely. With or without storms… winds are going to be an issue. Gusts of 40mph + will be possible during this time.
The NAM is checking that front up on top us for Christmas eve. Winter really isn’t that far away from us. Check out this temp map…
Some of the other models are a little more aggressive with the push of chill and keep our Christmas Day temps into the low and mid 50s. Rain and thunder moves back in later in the day from the southwest. Heavy rain then carries us into the early part of Saturday as even warmer air fights in.
The Canadian Model looks a lot like the map I put on here last night with the total rainfall…
That would cause all kinds of high water issues if that comes to pass. Let’s hope the warm air pushes that band a little farther north. If it does so, highs Saturday and Sunday may push 70 degrees or better. Record highs could be in serious trouble… again.
The actual storm system doesn’t move through here until Monday and Tuesday with more heavy rain and some thunder. Temps finally come down behind that system.
Looking for winter? The Ensembles are trying to flip the pattern
A huge flip is going to come at some point in January. I just don’t know that it’s as early as the Ensembles are showing. As always… We shall see.
I will have another update later today. Make it a good one and take care.
A third year of bad winter weather was unlikely, this will be a very mild winter!
Wow! All this record warm tons of rain. 60 s and 70s at Christmas. Why move to florida? We ve got the warmth. As a winter weather lover, i m very sad to see this weather. I do indeed dream of a white Christmas they sure are rare to come by here now. Maybe some day the cold and snow at Christmas will return. Merry Christmas Chris thanks for all the hard work.
Chris, wasn’t the winter of ’95 similar to this one (so far)?
Not complaining at all about the lack of cold. I would be okay with seeing about two weeks of cold and snow and moving on to spring. We missed out down here in Knox co. of the snow that the others in the state got last year so a lack of snow is nothing new here.
How much snow did you end up with last year in Knox county?
Probably less than 5 inches total. Sleet cut into totals on all the big events.
I`m not getting my hopes up about the pattern flip the week after next.
Probably not a total flip..Maybe we go back to normal temps for a while..Maybe we get lucky an can time a cold shot with moisture..Pretty much luck when it come’s to snow in Ky..Will say enjoying the warm weather..Could get use to this..
Getting a little scary

Nah we’ve been through much worse. It’s impressive for December standards I wouldn’t consider it scary at least not for us.
Well spc is talking about possible tornado outbreak..Seen forbes give a tor-con of 6 for western ky..7 for west tenn..Pretty high if you ask me..
Yeah I heard good ol Greg Forbes was giving high Tor-Con values. However did not realize western KY was at a 6.
As a Winter weather fan. The old phrase ” misery loves company”. Is what is keeping me going this year, knowing that everyone east of the Rockies is baking. It is a little easier to take knowing Winter is a thousand miles away instead of just being missed by 75 miles or less. Which has happened a lot where I live. Merry Christmas to Chris and everyone on the blog.
Slightly off topic but is there an inexpensive device that measures something along the lines of possibly ground tremors (don’t want to say earthquakes) and definitely explosions? I’m in Bourbon County and we hear those mysterious booms/explosions almost daily.
(sonic booms from meteorites, per the officials, but every day??)
My neighbor swears that today her whole house shook. My windows rattle every now and then but she is really rocking and rolling up on her hill. We need evidence that we aren’t crazy. I don’t know what would measure air/sound events or ground tremors. No mining out here. Just farms. Thanks. 🙂
Well, I’m not minding the warm weather. My electric bills last year were as brutal as the weather. I would like to get some cold and snow eventually, but only for about a month, LOL!
Enough cold to knock out insects and allergens is all I need.
Chris, could you keep weather in atlanta ga, Montgomery alabama, new orleans and houston in your weather thoughts jan 7/8th and han 12 /13th? Gonna be taking a trip going that route those days, id like keep up with what’s going on those days.
This warm christmas weather i saw happen when i was young i remember, early to mid 80s sometime, then it got cold and snowey sometime in early janurary.
