Good Sunday to one and all. Wow is what a lot of people across central and eastern Kentucky are saying today after severe storms ripped across the region. The Saturday afternoon boomers knocked down trees and took out power to more than 200 thousand customers.
The Louisville and Lexington metros were the hardest hit areas as winds topped 70mph in many cases. It could be a while before all the lights are back on as power crews are working overtime to get things back up and running. This means signal lights will continue to be out of sorts, so use caution.
Where do we go from here? Let’s break it down…
– Low pressure continues to wrap up across the mid atlantic states today. This will throw back some occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms across central and eastern Ky today.
– Temps today will range from the 70s east to low 80s in the west where we will see more in the way of sunshine.
– This slow moving low is likely to throw a few more showers into eastern parts of the state Monday. Highs will again range from the 70s east to low 80s west.
– Winds will gust up from time to time over the next few days.
– Tuesday looks like a winner of a weather day with highs 80-85 with plenty of sunshine and low humidity levels.
– Temps will spike into the mid and upper 80s for Wednesday as we await the next cold front to swing through here. Winds and clouds will begin to increase during the day.
– That front arrives on the scene Thursday with showers and thunderstorms of the scattered variety. Temps will head back down to the low and mid 80s.
– Friday is a big day as we kick off the high school football season in Kentucky. It looks as if this front tries to put the brakes on with scattered thunderstorms as the early call. Highs in the low 80s look good.
– There is an increasing threat for another big amplification in the jet stream late next weekend into the following week. This could mean another severe weather outbreak from the midwest into the Ohio Valley that would be followed by a substantial cool shot.
Let’s get to today’s version of “track whatever is out there”…
Current Temps

I will have updates as needed. Have a great Sunday and take care.

Yesterday’s storm was fierce in Bourbon County. I was at a community picnic on Stoner Creek and people were out on pontoon boats, canoes, and kayaks up until the storm got pretty close. A few of us were watching the radar and since there were no warnings, we assumed there would be rain and nothing else. We went ahead and made sure all the boats were docked and all the people were on dry land, and then the bands started playing and the food was served. I saw many people checking their phones to see if any warnings were issued and the general feeling was that it must not be too bad. Wrong!! That storm hit with extremely strong winds and the lightning was nonstop. It was a very dangerous situation and thankfully everybody was able to get back to their cars before the tents overturned. With all the trees around the creek, it was impossible to see how black and scary the sky was off to the west. A severe thunderstorm warning was definitely needed for that system. It would have been great to know that we were in danger sitting out there under huge trees.
Didn’t even sprinkle in Bowling Green!
Thanks, Chris. We really got the storm here in Somerset last night closer to 10:30 or so….the lightning itself was blue. The first strike we saw like that, we thought it was a transformer getting hit, but all of it was that way during the brunt of the storm. Ours was obviously not as bad as Louisville and Lexington, but it sure did make for an interesting light show!
Thanks for the imput about the NWS, Chris. I am in Versailles and we had quite a storm roll through here about 7:00, but no warnings. Lights went out briefly at my house, but came right back on. I thought maybe my weather radios had something wrong with them! Keep up the good work, Chris.
I drove down Spears Mill Road between Paris and North Middletown and it looks like a war zone. Huge trees are uprooted and some are right next to the road – just pushed aside enough to let cars pass. There is a new barn that has its roof peeled back the big door on that same side is totally caved in with a huge missing chunk of siding.
Various friends are posting photos of huge trees on top of power lines and saying they still don’t have power.
This was a BAD storm. By far the worst this year!
Is LMK gonna go and survey any of this? I think some areas may have seen tornadoes.
