Good Monday, everyone. A few weeks ago, I mentioned how this pattern reminded me a little of the spring setup from 2007. That featured a very warm March with a disaster of a cold snap in early April that also featured some snow. Well, that’s exactly what I have in the forecast for this week.
Today features a cold front dropping into the region with gusty winds and a few showers. Temps drop quickly behind this front and should take us back into the mid and upper 20s by Tuesday morning. There’s an outside chance of a snow flurry before skies clear overnight.
The next system working in for the second half of the week is a monster. This is going to unleash, for the time of year, bitterly cold temperatures. The arrival of all this is likely to be announced by high winds and some showers and storms on Wednesday. The simulated radar from the NAM…
The European Model has a similar round of rain and thunder, then has the cold diving in for Thursday…
From there, a clipper… That’s right… a clipper drops in from the northwest into Friday…
That’s absurd to see in April and should be a snow shower maker across our region. The WeatherBELL European and the GFS both show snows flying…
Friday is the opening Day at Keenelend and there’s a decent shot at having some flakes flying. The same thing happened for opening day in 2007.
The cold behind this system is astounding…
The GFS continues to suggest historic readings into the upper teens by Saturday morning…
Ugly!!!
I leave you with your Monday tracking toys…
Enjoy your Monday and take care.
What was the summer like in 2007?
Nooooo!!!
No!!!!!! Almost every Japanese Maple was killed in 2007. I wish the seasons would just act like they are supposed to.
Chris Mercer, thank you for that frost/freeze info yesterday. I wish we could get that sort of thing ‘stickied’ on the site somewhere as it’s both helpful in literal terms and also in giving the readers some context about how often this actually happens in April.
Copying and reposting for awareness.

Frost and freezing conditions in April are normal for Central Kentucky. It was the unusual warmth in March that makes this seem bad.
Here is some data for Lexington:
Last Frost (36 degrees or less)
Average: April 27
Latest: May 27, 1961
Last Freeze (32 degrees or less)
Average: April 15
Latest: May 20, 1894
Last Hard Freeze (28 degrees or less)
Average: April 2
Latest: May 10, 1966”
A hard freeze certainly looks inevitable. I really doubt the teens that the GFS is trying to show, especially with the clouds/rain/snow that is suppose to be around. None the less, significant damage appears likely.
Here’s to another early, lousy growing season!
The lone positive of 2007 was the significant reduction in flying critters.
I hate hot drought years. I hope this isn’t one, but I wouldn’t be surprised since the last few years have been so wet……I can’t remember, but I think 2007 was dry. In fact, it seemed like a couple of years in a row were pretty dry.
yep 2007 turned very dry, i remember the lake by my house getting very low that year, hope that doesn’t follow 07 pattern?
We are already trending dry here in SE KY, but still about even for the year-to-date. Only 2.54 inches here in Harlan for March–very dry for March standards
I’ll gladly take a semi-drought year as opposed to having to mow the yard on average 3 times per week (to keep it from becoming a hay field after 2-3 days) like I have had to do the last 4 yrs.
As has been mentioned multiple times, After the historic cold spell in April 2007 where highs couldn’t get out of the 20’s for several, the summer was dry and the thermometer hit 100 degrees in August. My recollection was I tried to attend a Reds day game on one of those days and it did not go too well for me.
In 2007, the agricultural losses were HUGE across the East.. this is not looking good.

We went to Florida that year and headed back home on Easter Sunday. The Florida weather had been decent up to that point but I remember wearing jackets to pack the car Easter morning. We kept on watching the car temperature reading drop the whole way home. There was also some snow on the ground that year and the cold was devastating to certain types of vegetation. Let’s hope its not a repeat.
Well – we didn’t get the big freeze last weekend that the weather maps were forecasting about this far out and I’m sure hoping we don’t get the one this weekend. I know the weather today is much nicer and warmer than many forecasts were calling for and it didn’t get anywhere near as cold last night… so I have my fingers crossed that this is like one of those big winter storms that just melts away the closer it gets to us. Hopefully the cold does the same!
