Good Saturday to one and all and welcome to the weekend. Some changes are brewing out there today and this will lead to showers and thunderstorms. It will also knock the temps down over the next few days. Speaking of changes… August is likely to feature some different weather around here.
In the short term… an increase in tropical moisture today will lead to a good shot of showers and thunderstorms. These storms can briefly go severe and put down a lot of water in a short amount of time. We’ll have to keep an eye on these for possible flash flooding.
Track the storms here…
Temps today should stay in the mid and upper 80s for highs in most areas.
Sunday will feature some more scattered showers and storm action as our temps hang out where they are today.
Hot weather will surge back in for much of next week as highs head back into the 90s. This is how the month of August starts… but isn’t likely to be an indication of how the rest of the month goes. The various forecast models are really beginning to hone in on a cooler pattern for the eastern half of the country once past next week.
A recent run of the GFS shows this very well for late in week 2 of August…
The same models are also pointing toward a stormy transition from the heat to this cooler pattern.
A little look into the tropics finds Don now a thing of the past as Emily waits in the wings. A very nice disturbance well out in the Atlantic is likely to become the first Hurricane of the season in the coming week. Here is where it’s located right now…
Give the pattern ahead… this system may threaten the southeastern U.S. next weekend into early the following week. That is certainly something to watch for as a busy tropical period of just getting going.
Back here in the bluegrass state… I will keep an eye on the storms of today and have updates as needed. Have a great Saturday and take care.

Congrats to Don Kirkpatrick for 31 years of service to the NWS at LMK. He is retiring today.
lot of years of keeping public informed for safety. Congradulations.

Thanks, Chris. HOpe your week has been a good one. I really hope that something comes along and helps out those folks in Texas. they really need the rain. We could use a little here, too. We have not been in on the scattered stuff that has been going on this week, so we are pretty dry here.
Mr. Kirkpatrick, congrats on your retirement, and thank you for all your hard work over the years. Everyone have a GREAT Saturday. Thanks again, Chris, for all you do.
Agree big time…
Hoping for rain here in Nicholasville. Not looking good so far…

A little thunderstormy here in Salyersville.
Looking forward to that cool down for August, but I’m not optimistic.
August has always been a stubborn month for heat.
watching the radar I have no idea how it did it but..it only rained enough in my part of knox co. to just BARELY wet the ground…
we only had slightly more than that
Wasn’t it supposed to be a cooler than normal summer? So whew…what’s normal around here, if this is cooler?
Same here – although I did have to use the windshiled wipers when I went to Rite Aid…
but our power went out for about 45 min as well
This is defintely not normal for here. Not sure what happened to a cool summer, but June and July have been hot. If August turns out to be cool, that still mean over half of summer was above normal.
