Good Thursday evening everyone. Wow!! What a day of weather across the bluegrass state. Thunderstorms developed along the arctic front across eastern Kentucky and now the snow and cold takes over.
The upper level system we showed you with the early morning blog is working out of Tennessee into Kentucky this evening. This is causing widespread snows to break out and accumulations will come quickly. A widespread 1″-3″ of snow is likely for most of the state into Friday. Locally higher amounts are possible.
Winds will continue to gust to 30mph or higher and this will cause some blowing and drifting snow out there. Temps will continue to fall into the upper teens and low 20s.
Travel conditions will continue to worsen through the evening and overnight hours. This should lead to significant issues for motorists into early Friday.
Don’t forget to check the radars, live cams and current condition tabs at the top of the blog. Your tracking tools are always on! I will have more updates as needed and will continue to crash your twitter timeline. 🙂
Keep posting those reports from where you live. Take care.
Banding!!!
this may be a silly question but what is banding?
It was when the vort max was moving through. A lot of lift was ahead of this, and it caused very intense snow bands to show up on radar. Gave my area VERY nice snowfall.
Spoke to my sister in Indy 19 and about an inch of snow, not much going on yet in Pikeville.Just saw Chris and Tony on Wsaz what a team!!!!!
1/2 inch in Bowling Green.
Thanks Mitch, got your report via e-spotter.
you’re welcome. No more talk of a snowless winter now!
been snowing pretty heavy here in barbourville for little over an hour now and the ground is coated…and its still coming down fairly steady
Depending on what part of Bville 😉
I do not like the look of the radar in western ky, over the last area it is starting to shatter. o well at least i got close to an inch.
“last hour not area sorry”
Roads are really beginning to get crazy slick around the Frankfort/Lawrenceburg area. Even hwy 127 becoming snow covered in spots.
Be safe out there people!
Clipper still there for early sunday
I can’t believe some places still had their high school b-ball games with these conditions.
will this be a wet or dry snow
We have a coating of snow here, but it’s enough to make the roads slick. Traffic was moving slow, but people were still sliding. Glad I made it home from work!!! Looks like the snow has stopped here with maybe more on the way.
Winds gusting to 35mph & blinding snow in Frankfort (BLIZZARD CONDTIONS 🙂
Would you please send out another update from Frankfort in a couple hours? I teach there and would really like to know the conditions before I go to bed. Hoping for a snow day tomorrow!!
I would say Franklin Co. schools will be closed. Just based on rural roads in dangerous shape.
Looks like the GFS is showing two pretty decent storms for the next two weekends. COLD – warm w/rain – COLD – warm w/rain – COLD warm w/rain…..This is how the rest of the winter will be. Just a matter of getting the cold in here before or with the precip.
For those of you who are getting into the action, because we sure are not here in the Lou. area, becareful out there.
bjenks, me thinks differently. I live in east Louisville. Little snow- quarter inch -I’ll give you that but I don’t see how we are missing out. My driveway is a skating rink and the road in my subdivision is not far behind. I would prefer my kids go to school tomorrow but if my ‘ecosystem’ is a danger, I can only imagine the rural roads. Winter weather has many forms!
I live in Louisville. Schools released early here today, sure because of the unknown and all of the buses. My street/driveway are ice covered. Will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow morning with JCPS?
quick glance at long range euro shows a more favorable pattern for the first half of FEB.
Snowing hard on Lakeville in Magoffin County!
snow seems to be breaking up across southern and south central ky…blah…
CB said we would have a short break with the snow and that it would begin again overnight.
According to the Sentinel-News there black ice on I-64 in Shelby County. The Sentinel-News said there are multiple reports of accidents around the county.
All roads are snow covered, including the US highway 127, here in Anderson Co. Lots of accidents.
Just sent the report in via eSpotter.
Take it easy out there.
FYI, we got it. Thanks for the report.
Snowing pretty heavy here right now!! Bring it on!!
I would say about an inch or so of snow in east Frankfort, the wind will make a accurate measurement almost impossible.
Not a lot here in Bardstown/Nelson Co. thus far, but our streets are slick here just behind the Court House/Justice Center. I went outside to get my cat, Fred, inside, and fell right on my butt just as I caught him out on the street!
my wind speed indicator has froze up. never seen that happen before!
out here in western KY we have 2.5+ inches on the ground and right before night we had about 1-1.5 inches and at this moment the stuff is coming down really hard
seems like you all have been in the sweet spot this time around, the area from paducah to bowling green…
Well… the “voice of reason” has gone from being the naysaying “a dusting to an inch” to now saying “an inch or less”. I would so love to get a couple inches here in Lexington just to shut him up!
Sure will be interesting to see who’s right… the BM, or the Legend!
The Legend, of course! CB is the very best!
Streets are dry in my neighborhood in Metro Lou. Cold but no snow. . Storm in the works next week?
Storm right not is mainly rain with snow on the back side with cold and dry weather to follow. The GFS shows a couple cold snaps with warm ups in between. We get our moisture when it warms up. Just our luck…
slide your SUV to my neighborhood just a few miles east and we can take the kids hookey-bobbing.
We are so excited that it is snowing! We hope it keeps up all night and this weekend! Thank you, Chris for keeping us updated!
It’s snowing again and has been for a while. Temp is 22 with a wind chill of 7. Roads are slick and those who have to travel need to be careful.
Dry air seems to be taking over on th radar….are we still expecting accumulations in EKY? Its snowing here now but not sticking at the moment.
We had a good thunderstorm roll thru here around 4:30 or so. We had hard rain, thunder, small hail! It is snowing pretty good now with the wind really blowing the temp is 32 deg. I am ready for the snow and a SNOW DAY for tomorrow!!!!!!!!!
power was out in several places in Ashland from the storm!
temp 22 here in etown with a wind chill of 10. Snowing pretty hard right now.
LOL…my yard sure hasnt had no snow love so far tonight…maybe a dusting around 6 .just flurries since then…i definetely have not been in the snow zone tonight
Got close to an 1″ here in my yard Tim. Radar hasn’t shown it but its been light snow and snow showery stuff. Roads are a disaster!!!!
well glad you all got some, you guys over in pulaski usually are on the lower end…looks like im on the low side this time…so far anyways…
no school tomorrow in knox, whitley! that means knox has a 4 day weekend…
Any more accumulation over night? Laurel Co. still hasn’t called off school!
We may have a half inch of snow in north Madison. I do not think I can recall having less than one inch of snow at this point in over 30 years.
Wild. Sure, we might get enough to breach an inch by tomorrow, but this low to this point… The good news is the strong wind could help dry out the roads- IF the snow is minimal and dry, from this point.
Though not likely, it would be ironic if that is what happens and the roads are mainly clear in the morning. There would be a lot of red eyed students and teachers in the AM 😉
We will probably are looking at another Swiss cheese coverage map, when all is said an done.
By red eyed, I mean tired.
not seing much on this side of the river either. i know better and am going to bed early. no red-eyed teacher here!
My kids thought they could play games all night, but just in case, we are making them go to bed at a semi normal time.
I recall a similar event last year, where the high winds helped dry the roads and had some red eyed kids in the morning for Fayette and Madison county.
Still, less than one cumulative inch and approaching mid January is stunning, even by my dark force standards of cynicism. 😉
Wish I knew what ScottCo. Was going to do for school tomorrow…working on a project with my son and it’s gonna be a long night. we had a beautiful band of snow showers come through a little while ago but it has stopped and the roads look somewhat clear now. Everything else is white…
it sure seems as if the majority of the snow is consistantly falling west of I-65 around the storm in the great lakes! I wonder if that shifts east thru the night? or dissipates ?? chris, mitch, wxman? any ideas on that..
How’s the clipper for late saturday looking?
In Northern Roane County, WV, the temp is dropping. At 5pm it was 48. Now, at 9:15pm, it is 36. That is a 12 degree drop in 4 hours. As a matter of fact, it is dropping faster now. A few minutes ago, I watched it drop 2 degrees in 10 minutes.
Earlier this evening, I saw a bit of lightening and heard a loud rumble of thunder. It’s hard to believe it will be snowing soon. I see it on the radar, though. Our turn for snow is coming soon!
In Lawrenceburg, a good inch of snow, with gusty winds…schools in Anderson Co already called off for tomorrow…be safe…
It seems that the bulk of our snow will start over night as our winds kick in
Possible, but I think CB mentioned the main heavy stuff was with this front. I following the script, we should be approaching sporadic light snow and squalls. In other words, hit and miss snow coverage. Factor in a strong wind and we could perhaps see roads mainly covered in salt, rather than snow in the morning.
WX was right, they might have saturated the roads and also to avoid the debacle of our last Swiss cheese event.
My grammar and spelling is Rolo level 🙂 😉
Where is Rolo, BTW? Goat get him?
Just kidding with Rolo, since his message structure is almost like an avatar in words 🙂
I think CB said the eastern part of the state would get the most overnight.
More to the point: Madison and Fayette kids and teachers: Go to bed! 😉
We have snowball dances and archery tournaments and all other kinds of fun stuff to do! We don’t need no stinkin’ snow day!
Heck, we just came of Christmas break for jeepers sake!
I prefer to go and get it over with. Getting out in May would be nice for a change.
Agreed. Based on the trend for winter so far, that will probably be no problem.
No school in Powell Co!
I wonder if that radar will fill in again???
About a inch, brings the grand total of the season to about an inch and a half and that may be a generous estimate. The last few years spoiled me with those over achievers, but i guess this season will be different.
I hope tht radar does feel back in. It looks like a big empty hole over us here in the Ashland/Flatwoods area! Bring on the Snow! I am sick and could really use a snow day from work/school tomorrow!
Clipper appears gone
AT LAST!! I was beginning to think all my snow was coming as rain, but it finally switched and now have a solid dusting. Based on Chris’s tweet, should be more to come. Didn’t want to post earlier and be negative, had to sit back and have faith the forecast would pan out!
Are you referring to the weekend clipper? If so, it “appears gone” based on what? Just curious.
sorry, meant this for jonb.
It is nice to finally see winter arrive. Does anybody know if what the long term outlook is for the rest of the winter? I love this site.
snow here in western KY looks like a blizzard the wind must be gusting up to 40 MPH with heavy snow
Looks like the snow dome is in full effect over the Lexington area. On the radar the stuff moving in from the west dissipates right when it gets here and it is snowing up jack to the east. I haven’t seen any snow falling here for several hours now.
roads was bad around 7pm cst from parts of 65 north from nashville , and cumberland parkway eastward towards sommerset. from somerset to london was a little better. road crews were out working on roads salting them, but at times roads were still bad. i am proud of road depts on getting things done, so people like my family and me can get home after been gone almost a month.
from most of 80 towards london from sommerset, roads were little better shape
not near the snow in london and manchester that points west of sommerset saw
my yard is white, so I am happy.
no school in Estill Friday
