5am Saturday Update
Good Morning… again. Shortly after posting my update the NWS has now issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of central and southeastern Ky this afternoon into tonight. Here’s a look at the counties included…
Areas within and near the advisory may pick up 1″-2″ of snow during this time. Take care.
Previous Update
Good Saturday to one and all. We have a fast movingย clipper diving southeastward across the state later today and this will deliver a streak of light snow for some. There isn’t very much moisture associated with this system and that means only light snow along and just to the north of the weak low.
This system won’t have much with it until it arrives into Kentucky late this afternoon into the evening and hasย a shotย to deliver a light accumulation of snow. Here is the area that has the best chance at picking up an inch or two…
The prime time for flakes will be late this afternoon into the wee hours of Sunday. This isn’t a huge deal… but the ground is frozen and that means some roads could become slick and even snow covered.
Highs today will hit the upper 20s and low 30s with some flurries flying before the light snow streak.
Sunday will see improving weather as sunshine returns and boosts our temps into the 30s. The next system develops in the plains states on Monday and will throw some milder air and rain our way into Tuesday. This is when another arctic boundary slips through here with much colder air and a few snow showers into the middle of next week.
I will have another update later today and will send out tweets about today’s snow streak. Don’t forget to click on the tracking tools at the top of the page.ย Have a great Saturday and take care.
Thanks Chris! Maybe will get another snow day or two next week! All is content and well in my little snow globe world here in the southeast.
Thanks for the update! Action has died off in the comments last couple of posts. Anyone have any thoughts on next week? Crackuweater is showing temps into the 50’s, but based on one of Chris’s earlier tweets, I believe he may beg to differ. Would love to see some thoughts on this in the next post and know if there is anything in the pipeline that warrants closer attention.
I think next week will be mild except wed. and thu.
Yea, it appears that we are headed into a pronounced warming period soon; wish could get Chris to say what his thoughts are; I know that the GFS has been pretty steady the last couple days with the blow torch; highs here north of nashville well into the mid 60’s for a while after next week, hope that is incorrect but like I said, it has been on the GFS and cant really find any other sources that would refute it from happening…
Sorry, but I feel it pretty hard to believe it will be mid 60’s end of January/beginning of February. :/
I remember CB saying something about all that arctic cold that will be coming down…I believe he said something to the effect of it being a force to be reckoned with, or something like that. Don’t think it will be mild for long.
Good morning everyone!! Local forecast here is giving me 1/2 to 1 inch of snow today. It’s not a lot, but it’s something.
Woohoo, E-Town is in the sweet spot it seems ๐ Love surprises!
from NWS in JKL…
* SNOW WILL DEVELOP LATE IN THE AFTERNOON OR EARLY ON THIS EVENING.
THE SNOW COULD BE HEAVY AT TIMES. THE SNOW WILL TAPER TO SCATTERED
SNOW SHOWERS OR FLURRIES OVERNIGHT.
* 1 TO 2 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED ON AVERAGE. LOCALLY HIGHER
AMOUNTS AROUND 3 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE NEAR THE HAL ROGERS PARKWAY
CORRIDOR AND ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS NEAR THE VA BORDER.
sounds nice…
sounds cool blizzardtim ๐ we will take snow . hope noone has to be out and driving when it gets bad this afternoon and evening. my family and i were out in it trying to get back home thurs night when the last one hit, and roads were alful in spots. road dept was working, but theys just so much they can do, with so many roads.
been with the blog since chris was with wkyt. are you the same tim that had to have some sugery done a year or so ago, i think that one posted under the name tim at the time? i was just wondering. just trying to keep up with who all is still here from the wkyt blog. they are a lot of names i can remember from way back. bubbag, rolo (a good friend of mine), coffeelady, mj, wxman (a fellow ham operator ๐ )and a few more when i see them.
will be following your updates chris today for the upcoming snow event.
yes sir! that is me.. I added blizzard to it last yr. I think, because there was a couple other guys named Tim that was posting comments at the time.. yeah we’ve been with the blog since the very first one!! way back when…lol.. some other names to add to the original gang. would be Vinny, chelle, chas, bernie, shawna, and several others…
yep!
thats more of em ๐ hope all is doing well.
Nice little clipper. Doesn’t look very promising after that or chris would have said something.
The advisory is hugging Warren County! Wonder if we will completely be missed ๐
GFS looked colorful near months end.
Yep, that and the other models have been “really” good with outlooking snow ๐
hey all, whats UP Chris G!!
yea alot off traffic since the ole days of the blog, alot of youngsters aboard now which is cool.
this clipper looking NICE!! I can see decent snow from this QUICK HITTER, it going to MUSHROOM as it hit the mountains. like it!!
rolo always love seeing what you have to say. Be sure to keep commenting because the OLD SCHOOL will be here!!!!!!
looking for the old school snow
get em out, a sleading we will go
just dont bring us old school ice
that sorta thing just isnt nice
whats up rolo! hows it going
Rolooooooooooooo!
dont want no duster
we want a bubba buster
i take that back. a old plymouth duster car would be cool to have.
Maybe we need to get Rolo to sacrifice a goat to the the snow god? Nah, goats are cool ๐
The snow is fading here in Paintsville but I’m hoping to see more tonight….we’re on the line between Chris’s chance and good chance so I’m hoping to be included in the higher amounts…..we shall see!
Today: I’m more concerned about today’s event because it was sunny this morning, which is going to fool people into driving to the mall, stores, etc. Then the snow is going to hit and cause a traffic nightmare. Also.. two days ago it was warm, then went to cold. This time, it’s already been cold. So the ground is frozen solid. 14 degrees this morning. Which means the snow will stick instantly today and it’ll be slick!!
I continue to see signs of a possible ICE even later in the week. Waiting on today’s 12Z GFS to look for continuing trends..
Please, not ice…I’ve never recovered from 2009.
I saw that before this last snow shower event. I was thinking maybe a rain/snow mix. We don’t need ice. Also, the GFS looked good for the end of the month. I know it’s too far out but it’s fun watching the changes in model guidance.
Unless it’s forecasting for tomorrow I have no faith in the GFS.
snow will not develop till later today don’t let the radar fool you. The best lift and forcing should be along I-64 today which is where the 12z Models develop a period of snow. This is from Lexington to Ashland.
So you disagree with chris’s snow map?
Thanks Mitch. I was wondering ๐
Man mitch, your disagreeing with LMK on this one big time. Haha, not a big deal, I agree with you, this will build more north than they are saying.
good morning from the town of wayne, wva at 11:55am the sky is partly cloudy with the temp right at freezing. i said yesterday that the clipper would mainly be from the ohio river and points south with the greatest accumalations from i-64 and points south and that is basically chris snow map for the wwa for later today and tonight. we shall see. i also said a coating along the river and then up to 2 inches from i-64 and points south. we shall see how it all plays out. as for the outlook for the rest of the month, a brief warmup, albeit a dirty warmup, from monday through tuesday then another 3 or 4 day prolonged cold spell, in other words up and down for the rest of the month then a more pronounced cold and snowy period for feb. into march and possibly some of april.
i have always said that after such a late start to winter that our spring may be delayed quite a while this year and that is exactly what i think may happen this year.
any one up for snow on easter this year? heck what about mothers day? don’t laugh yet, its not to far fetched the way things are looking at the present pattern we are in. thanks for reading what a weather weenie wannabe has to say about the future in the wonderful world of weather. god bless.
getting a little bit of light snow/flurries here at my place in knox co. with that batch of snow moving across the southern counties right now..
Thinking about going to Mt Sterling for a movie this evening but I don’t want to drive in the snow. What do you all think?
It’s up to 30 now in Lex with sun shining.
What part of Knoxville did they find the referees for this game?
By the look of the radar, it should be snowing here. Nothing is hitting the ground though.
NOTHING DO with REFSA, all to do we aint got a GREAT POINT GUARD, and we been spoiled in that area.
TEAGUE not top 10 PG right now and that and not having a POST player will be our downfall. why u see a GOOD DEFENSIVE TEAM like UT stopping us, just aint got neither i refered to above.
to weather its CALED VERGA itsa not reaching ground yet.
No argument there. Just referring to calls at end of half. No charge, T on Cal, touch fouls on cats, no call muggings on Tn.
Hope Mitch is right about snow thismafternoon.
I hope chris is right;-)
It’s 30 degrees here with a dewpoint of 20. Humidity is 67%. Still nothing but verga. I fear the moisture will be gone before any snow hits the ground. Any thoughts from anyone
Lookin’ like a bust. ๐
That’s what I was thinking, but was really hoping I was wrong ๐
I think CB said late this afternoon and evening, so too early yet, if anything happens.
Thanks Bubba. I was just worried that mine was supposed to happen earlier since I’m in the western part of the state. I’ll be patient and see what happens ๐
Latest RUC model favors precipitating snow east of I-65, I’m not saying that will happen. Does show up to 2″ possible for areas around London and Jackson.
Lexington may get in on a little bit, possibly 0.2-0.5″.
poor ole clipper don’t look chipper !!!…
