Good Saturday and welcome to a taste of winter weather. The bottom has fallen out of our recent toasty thermometers and we have a few flakes flying about the air today. This is just the early stages of what looks to be a pretty healthy winter in the making.
Friday set record highs in the mid and upper 70s across much of the state. Those numbers have dropped by more than 40 degrees by early today. If we throw in Sunday morning wind chill numbers deep onto the teens…
It will feel 60 degrees colder than what we had on Friday. Let that one sink in for a bit.
Highs today will generally range from the upper 30s to low 40s, but it’s never ever going to feel that “warm”. Dress for upper 20s and low 30s during the daylight hours and low and mid 20s this evening.
Northwesterly winds will usher in lots of low-level moisture and the potential for a snow shower or flurry. The greatest risk continues to be across central and eastern parts of the state. There is an outside chance the highest mountains in the southeast can be dusted late tonight. Areas just to our east in West Virginia have the best chance at picking up some very light accumulations.
Track away…
Keep in mind, flurries don’t show up on radar. 🙂
Sunday morning lows will be close to 20 in some spots with those wind chills deep into the teens. Highs may not get out of the 30s in the central and east. That will set the stage for another very cold night on Sunday with lows reaching the upper teens and low 20s by Monday morning.
Seasonally chilly temps will be with us for Monday and Tuesday.
Another system comes in by Wednesday with rain becoming likely. What? Rain LIKELY? That’s certainly how it looks, with lingering showers into Thanksgiving…
Highs for Thanksgiving look to be in the chilly low and middle 40s.
A weak system may also impact our weather by Black Friday, and is something to watch for.
The colder pattern then throws a system in here by late Saturday into Sunday, as we wrap up the holiday weekend. The GFS has almost a clipper look to it…
The European Model is much more impressive…
This pattern continues to look like it is loading up for some fun and games for December. It’s full steam ahead toward a HUGE block across eastern Canada that allows much of the United States to grow cold and stormy.
November 28th…
December 4th…
Look out below!
I will have another update later today. Have a great Saturday and take care.
At 330 in Richmond, the winds have dramatically increased almost instantly. Some rain as well.
Rodger’s ready for some cold and snow. Just hoping it’s not all Lucy holding the football stuff. Rodger in Dodger
Thanks Chris. We really enjoyed your winter prediction on WKYT.
Nicely done. We are ready for the snow, not so much on the ice!
Go Big Blue!
well, big snow fans might not like the forecast 😉 Looks like back to drive-by snows and salt piling up more than the snow. Just as long as we can miss on the ice- all good 🙂 Lots of warm air aloft chances though if the cold and warm air battle later in winter.
We are loving the “holiday feeling” weather this weekend from Harlan….well at least my family does.
It also bodes well for us in KY for better chances of snow and cold in the near future if we can continue to build the snow pack on the ground in the northern US. Some parts of MN just picked up over 20 inches. I hope this snow pack will continue to build over the next few weeks.
Spitting snow here in greenup…BTW I honestly think we will.be surprised by a nice snow this winter
