1pm Update
Good afternoon gang. I have no changes to my thought process from earlier as a wintry mix and ice targets areas along and north of Interstate 64 this evening into Saturday. The models are a bit wetter across the north and that’s an area I expect a light to moderate ice event to unfold. This may end up causing some issues and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this upgraded to a warning for some areas.
Midday temps range from the low 20s in the north to the low 40s to the south. That has trouble written all over it!
A full update comes your way a little later this afternoon. Take care.
Previous Update
Good Friday everyone and welcome to a wild weather weekend across the bluegrass state. We have the potential for everything from ice to strong thunderstorms over the next few days. This may not be the snowy pattern many of you crave… but it’s far from boring.
We are going to start the weekend out with a major temperature gradient from north to south. The spread may be greater than 25 degrees later tonight as low pressure works across the Tennessee Valley. Moisture will be streaking in from the west and southwest later this afternoon into the evening hours. There is a ton of low level, arctic air in place across the northern half of the Ohio Valley and this stuff is very hard to push around. Milder air often gets shunted over top of it, leading to the potential for a mix or ice.
Here’s what I’m currently thinking in terms of precipitation late today into early Saturday…
The lines are not rock solid as it will all depend on where that 32 degree line sets up. It will move north a bit overnight as the low gets closer. The freezing mark should then crash back in as the low is to our east. The GFS has been steady of late and the other models are going toward it.
The latest GFS shows how the precipitation type varies from one time to the next…
That same model run continues to point toward the northern half of the state as being the prime area for light ice accumulation…
That is something we must watch VERY closely as it only takes a small amount of ice to create some BIG travel problems. This is a situation for us to track hour by hour as the precipitation moves in later today. All your tracking tools are at the top of the page. Radars, current conditions and live weather cams will all come in very handy through Saturday.
That system moves out later Saturday with the next one slated to arrive Sunday night. Temps will spike up well into the 50s on Sunday as a gusty southwesterly wind blows ahead of a strong cold front. This front will have a nice push of cold air behind it…
We will need to be on guard for a squall line of strong or severe thunderstorms rolling from east to west Sunday night into early Monday. High winds will be the main threat with the storms and behind the front. A few snowflakes may even fly later in the day Monday.
Is that a wild enough weekend for you?
I will have updates as needed through the day so check back. Be sure to follow me on twitter for some rapid fire thoughts. Your reports will become invaluable in helping us determine what type of precip is falling where, so keep those coming.
Have a great Friday and take care.
The one weekend I have plans to travel, what does it do?? EVERYTHING. It’s my karma. Always.
NWS Jackson actually acknowledges the possibility for snow Tuesday into Wednesday after originally saying we would be abnormally warm next week….wow, they have backtracked fast!
Per Brian Goode “Quick mention of the outlook for next week…models were trying to show a storm setup next Wed…it is back to a colder solution today with perhaps even a clipper next Thursday with some snow. As I have stated, we cannot trust the models beyond 3-4 days right now. They are REALLY struggling this year…and this is the worst performance of them I have seen in recent years. We will just have to take this winter one week at a time. “
Thanks Chris! Does not look that bad. If you don’t like ice just sleep in and you will miss it. That will give you a couple of hours to stay up late on Sunday to see the strong/severe storms move in. This way you won’t lose any sleep over the weekend. Ha Ha!!
Can’t wait to see what February brings us. Odds are that we are on the same rollercoster we have been on since late November. The cold looks tohold on into the far northern states and Canada for the next few weeks.
I am going to stop Thinking Snow!!! But I am not giving up.
I have been trying to “Think Snow”……….but I think I am done now also!
Ready for spring! Enough of this craziness!! 🙂
yeah, might as well break out the lawn furniture, bbq grills, and get the pools ready…LOL…. 🙂
I just might! Haha! It does look like the back side of the system might skirt the BG area with a little ice Saturday morning though………..
suppose to be sunny and in the 60’s !!! Down here in the TROPICS of southern ky..
Technically, it has been spring 😉
And the hubs is leaving for Key West. Can’t wait to watch as these systems develop.
I usually don’t do this, but I have to give some props to WXman for talking for over a week about the exact setup the models are now finally showing today. If it had turned out to be in the 60s today and tomorrow a bunch of people on here would have given him some ridicule.
Bravo to him and others who aren’t afraid to stick their necks out while making predictions in the comment section of this blog. It makes it fun and interesting to read.
WXman usually hits the nail on the head, at least for my area. I put more trust in his forecasts than any of the other Mets.
I agree completely….he was warning us of this almost a week out. Thanks Wx man 🙂
Thanks everybody. I’ve been told that even a blind squirrel will occasionally find a nut. 😉
If anybody has access to the local news stations out of Cincinnati, tomorrow will be a good time to watch. Those folks are about to find themselves in a MESS.
Im thinking Louisville might be having a possible mess on there hands also it’s going to be real border line for them. Looking at some of the sites just north of Louisville by 15 maybe 20 miles tops and there readings are in the mid 20’s. If I was the NWS just to be safe I would include the counties right along the Ohio River on the KY side.
Yep, and I know which one has made the blind squirrel comment. In my opinion he needs a cranialanalectomy.
Just a taste of one Super Bowl Commercial….
Might need to copy link to URL….you will LUAO….It is also pretty cool Dogs are smart though…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ntDYjS0Y3w&feature=player_embedded
That commercial is very funny but my four dogs think they have to sing along, so I have to quickly change the channel.
huge temperature spread across the state already…17* in n.ky. and 36* here in knox co. in southern ky…gonna be a wild weather day on I-75 north and south across the state today.
Another frustrating winter seems to be our lot! Areas just to our north who were in the same boat as we were are now making up for lost time in the snow department, and what do we get…? Its particularly frustrating given the amount of cold air that’s out there, and that we can’t seem to tap into it. Winter (at least what I call winter), has lasted a grand total of 3, maybe 4 days this year. Could we be on tack for the least snowy winter on record around here? Top 5 seems well within reach… 🙁
Be patient people. 🙂 Winter is not over….just a little late.
Mother Nature is a female, afterall. 😉
Yes WXman,,, Mother Nature is a chick and she’s making me mad!! I mean,,, is it TOOO much to ask that she throw us a winter bone????? I just want 1 good snow!!
Ha ha. Not.
😉
So, SPC says no organized severe weather is going to happen anywhere in the U.S. Sunday night.
Anybody wanna’ take bets on how many tornadoes we’ll see on the Storm Reports chart Monday? 🙂
Before I bet, tell me what you think…You did well with the ice!
Well, The Euro takes the low from Kansas City to the Great Lakes by the wee hours Monday morning. The GFS follows a similar path, maybe a wee farther south. It kind of has a “double barrel” look at the surface. To me, everything looks ripe for a severe squall line.
Instability is lacking. It’s 4:00AM in january..so you wouldn’t expect instability. That may hurt.. but the 110 knot jet streak nosing into Tennessee, plentiful 850mb and 700mb moisture, and neutral tilt of the front as it slams into Kentucky all argue for at least some wind damage, if not some tornadoes in western KY and southern IN. I’m betting on 4 tornado reports… and widespread wind damage reports come Monday from this region. And we won’t even be in SPC outlooks for severe weather prior to it happening. 🙂
Um, I’m pretty sure we’ll be in the outlooks that are forthcoming.
I hope so man, I really hope so. 4:00AM on a Monday morning is prime time to catch citizens offguard with something like this. We need to get the word out there about the possibility, starting now.
See that they did a day 3 ammendment? West KY is now in a slight risk.
Yes… I can’t believe it! They found Kentucky on the map!
P.S. you totally rocked the afternoon AFD. Thanks!
I would hope so. but knowing the SPC we might not have any type of map until 1 am Monday.
Hope history won’t be repeating itself. Way back in January 1890, parts of TN, MO (including near St Louis), and western KY experienced violent tornadoes. One of very few times KY has had January F4 twisters. As it is, this time (2012) St Louis is in the colder air, they are now under Winter Weather Advisory.
Guess you can’t blame the SPC for not issuing watches in 1890 😉
28, and for January, thats a lot haha
Does anyone have any connections up in central Indiana? Headin’ up that way and need to know how much ice and snow is CURRENTLY on the ground…and how much will fall on top of that tonight…any head is appreciated greatly…
I by chance had just looked up a couple of Indianapolis tv station websites. Can’t guarentee they will have live streaming coverage like during tornadoes, but the ABC affiliate posted updated pics/video reports only 30 minutes ago (prior to my post). You might also try the Indianapolis NWS website.

Hey WXman,
As I’ve stated before I’m a weather newbie. I know nothing except what I read on here and see on television. What kind of snow/rain/ice is Eastern Kentucky (spec. Floyd County) looking at from Sunday through Wednesday. I ask, because I have family that will be trying to come in, stay in, and leave on those days. CHRIS BAILEY if you’re reading this then PLEASE feel free to share. Also ROLO and the rest. Thanks!
I think Floyd Co. is in good shape. I wouldn’t expect a lot of icing there. They should stay rain for most of this storm.
wow ! 22* covington……52* in Middlesboro
32 here in E-Town
That is just crazy isn’t it?
Wow, 12z GFS looks very, very good for severe weather outbreak in the area early Monday morning. I would begin anticipating a strong squall line to move through early Monday morning.
Looks like a rain event in Frankfort area temp up to 35 & rising. Ice will be atleast 30to 40 mile north of I64.
Will the lines Chris initially make hold true…..for once I’m hoping for no winter precip in Johnson! Ice storms are absolutely the worst and I’ve had my fair share for a lifetime!
As CB said, will be something to have to monitor based on temperature profiles. Surface temps and pavement temperatures will be crucial.
Still not expecting a serious event for Louisville, but the ice will be closer to our area than I anticipated. Precip will be light. Ice is ice, though. At the very least, watch that first step. Could be a lu-lu.
Do expect some travel troubles further north. Power outages? Hard to say. Should not be a widespread problem, but could be some outages nonetheless.
Main roadways should be ok here in Louisville Icy patches cannot be ruled out, especially on secondary roads. This would only be for a brief time for us.
I also expect the SPC to begin issuing statements regarding possible severe weather chances by possibly this evening. I would at least put our region in a slight risk category. Tornado chances in a 5% category right along the river. That would be a decent probability considering the time of year.
well temp. is up to 50* here in knox co. now with overcast skies…yawn..
PHONE CALL:
ME: Hello, Yes I want to order 6 wks of winter.
THEM: We’re sorry the number you have dialed is no longer in service.!!
LOL…pretty much sums it up down here…
I am thinking ahead to Sunday night/Monday morning. I think it was in January (maybe Feb.) 2008?? that we had widespread wind damage here in Mercer Co. from a severe storm/front coming through. I will never forget the details (but the date I am trying to remember). Straight line wind knocked over about 20 trees on our lane here by Herrington Lake. Me and the hubby ran upstairs to get our infant and get to the basement- a 20 foot cedar tree got snapped in half and thrown down our yard several hundred feet and I saw it through the window when the lightning hit…I bet some of you know that date- I think damage in Mercer and Anderson Counties to some roofs/churches. Anyway, my point being…..I hope a middle of the night event would be warned about in advance, especially since it is in the Winter and not spring when people are expecting it. We had a weather radio. I will never forget that picture looking out the window at trees flying straight in the air.
Feb. ’08 (or ’09?). Anderson Co. went under not one, but two tornado warnings that night. Tore up the county fairgrounds pretty bad too and wiped out all the flagpoles for the veterans’ memorial in town.
It was Feb 2008 – I was in the hospital trying to have a baby at Floyd Memorial in New Albany…and we had a “code wind” evacuation because of tornadoes. Won’t ever forget that! Ha!
Thanks! That sounds like it….I have been trying to remember the date for a while now.
By the way WXman- impressive call a week out. Also, I could not imagine being in labor having to move into a safe area/hall of the hospital!
It was horrifyingly scary.
This one hit Lexington too and man was it scary! I remember hearing the sirens and running to the basement right before the power went out. We were okay, but the next day when we drove around, the street two behind ours had 7 HUGE trees completely uprooted. One had fallen into a house and several on cars. A few more streets over and it was the same thing plus damage to the roofs of houses. Straight line winds were to blame and I think that’s the first time in my life I realized how much damage just wind can do!
What abt the Ashland/Flatwoods/Russell area? Will we have to worry abt any ice here? Temp 31 deg here at 3pm.
LMK extends Winter Weather Advisory farther south…
I also like Chris’ map that he posted. I think it’s spot-on.
Snowing now in Chicago – Wrigley Field webcam, with sound.
http://www.earthcam.com/usa/illinois/chicago/wrigleyfield/
There was a skidsteer clearing the snow from the sidewalk, but haven’t seen it lately.
well even I cant remember a winter thiw DULL, that said most winter last decade been dull but this takes the cake.
watching golf seeing GREG NORMAN makes me feel old, man trhe shark was the man back in late 80s early 90s.
I
My goodness tell me about it!!! Rain, thunderstorms, and temps in the 50’s and 60’s right thru next Thursday ! Rolo..Wake me up when winter decides to return to southern ky !!
Sprinkles
50 degrees
At 3:17 Fayette County and surrounding counties were included in the Winter Weather Advisory… If I were you WXman,, I’d be tooting that horn! Good call on the ice potentia,,, Days agol!
Nws forecasts 50s thru week. no sign of a start to winter in sight and I’m through with it. Bring on spring and reds baseball!!!!
Would not be surprised based on current dewpoints and the 12z soundings Covington area ends up seeing some sleet mixing in or even all sleet for a few hours. this would keep ice accums down under 1/4 inch.
Any chance for snow in Covington?
33.4 degrees in Frankfort, temp dropping last 2 hours??????
winter storm warning now in dayton, but i dont think its anything big glazing of ice with 1-2 inches is what it looks to amount to.
