Good Thursday evening. We’ve been in a very busy weather pattern for the past few weeks and this shows no signs of letting up. Mother nature is going to throw a lot of action our way over the next several days. So, let’s get after it.
A band of light snow and flurries will work across northern and eastern Kentucky late this evening into the overnight. This can put down a coating for a few spots. Temps behind the front are very cold and the north will settle into the mid and high teens by morning. Everyone else will be in the 20s.
That temperature spread is going to become fairly dramatic late Friday into Friday night. There could be a 20-25 degree range from north to south during this time. Precipitation will be moving into the area from the west into the afternoon hours. The forecast temp gradient being shown by the GFS has not changed over the past three days.
Here’s what it looks like today…
The model continues to show southern and southeastern Ky spiking into the 50s Friday night, while areas along the north hold near freezing. Temps then crash into the 20s across much of northern, central and western Kentucky by Saturday morning.
That suggests the potential for a mix and light freezing rain for areas where the temps are at or below 32 degrees. I get the fact the NAM is milder… but it is also trending colder than what it’s been showing. I don’t get the fact that so many are totally dismissing the GFS temperature profile when it has shown the exact same thing for several days. This isn’t the GFS from 5 days out… it’s a day away, so it has to be given some weight.
We will see how this all plays out… but I want to make sure to give you a “heads up” to the POSSIBILITY of a mix or light ice across parts of the region.
The hits keep coming our way by Sunday night into Monday as another potent storm drags a cold front through here. Here’s the European Model…
That setup could bring another round of strong or severe thunderstorms and gusty winds Monday with cold and snow showers by Monday night. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. 😉
I will have a full update later tonight. Have a great evening and take care.
Frozen precip for the BG area?
No. We should be in the 50’s Friday.
That is what I figured! Thanks!
From what I’ve seen on other met’s sites, they’re predicting a major severe wx outbreak again as early as Sunday evening. I guess we we’ll see..??! 🙂
Seems the infamous 33/32 rule is locked in.
Hey BubbaG..Between that and the snowdome, I’m ready to give into an early spring! Seems like spring has been putting up a pretty good fight with all these thunderstorms and winter has given up!
Hang in there Patty. We still have February to go and all that cold air up north has to let go sooner or later. Let’s hope Feb is the opposite of Jan.
I know, I keep thinking we’ll get our winter. I just don’t see it happening!
I like how CB is sticking to his guns on the next few days…
GFS at hour 384 is impressive….The 28th through the 2nd look to be pretty stormy…..Once again wishful thinking. These models can’t be trusted at all this year. I am going to start nowcasting for all future weather events.

Seattle uses it streets as there sledding hills. Don’t they have parks or golf courses…LOL….Looks like fun…
Severe event is likely Sunday night-Monday.
What sort?!
Euro shows blowtorch for first half of feb. No opinions on this, just informing of what the model shows 😉
Looks like someone else saw the euro weekly control. much different than last week’s which looked good. Not buying it 100% at this time.
Regardless of whether we get a big snow or not, you have to admit this has been a pretty mild winter. Of course some cold days are going to be here, but the warm has pretty much won the battle so far. January is historically the coldest month and it has been a dud for snow lovers. One good thing is that my gas bill that came today is a record low.
exactly temps 2-3 above normal for the month.
So far, those who have predicted above avg. temps for this winter are winning out. 🙁 Oh well, at least I hope when it gets spring that we will continue to have slightly above avg temps and only avg rainfall. If it’s not going to be snow, I don’t want the rain and all the mud that goes with it.
Hey, all you bloggers! There is a chance that we could see Aurora Borealus (sp. so you can correct, as needed, ha) , (just think Northern Lights). If ! we get them as they say (Spaceweather.com), and it’s not cloudy this weekend, there could be awesome sights in the night sky), it’s wait and see; could be awesome if not cloudy–might be clear, if no snow is coming… I’ll give over Northern Lights for SNOW!!!
Looks like wait and see until mid-day Friday or later for NKY to see how much icing we will get. Local met I trust suggests northern counties in Ohio (i.e Tommy) will get the most, but 0.1-0.2″ of ice is possible.
I figure ILN will put out a Freezing Rain Advisory in the AM for some of their counties, including at least Boone-Kenton-Campbell but we shall see. Looks like a borderline case at this point.
I can believe it! its 10 at my place now, this low level cold is very entrenched and i doubt we hit higher than 30 at max saturday.
