Good Saturday everyone. ‘Wow’ is a word I would use to describe the weather from last night into today. Ice and strong thunderstorms continue to push across the bluegrass state early this morning with the cold air slowly winning out today. We also have another big strong system set to swing in Sunday night and Monday with another round of wild weather.
There isn’t much more that I can say about the situation out there early today. Ice is a big problem across northern Kentucky with heavy rain and thunderstorms exiting parts of southern and southeastern areas of the state. I suspect the freezing line will crash to near or south of Interstate 64 this morning and give this region a taste of a mix or some light ice.
Temps across the board will drop into the 30s and should hold there much of the day. There would be some light ice hanging tough into the afternoon hours in the north and northeast. Be sure to check the radar, current conditions and live weather cam pages at the top. They have all you need to track today’s changing condition.
Spring air is going to surge in here on Sunday as temps warm well into the 50s and may even top 60. Winds are going to gust as a strong cold front works in from the west. This will spawn a squall line of showers and thunderstorms that races quickly eastward through the state. Some of these storms may be strong or severe with damaging winds the main threat. Here’s how the NAM sees it playing out…
That’s a nice cold shot of air chasing that squall line through the state. Temps will drop all day Monday and there could be a few snowflakes flying by. Is this a wild January pattern or what?
Looking longer range… I’m really beginning to focus more and more on next weekend into the following week as the pattern looks interesting. 😉
I will have another update later and will continue to send out thoughts via twitter. Have a great Saturday and take care.
Working at the airport here in Louisville, mainly just drizzle most of the night. Temperatures started becoming noticably colder by end of the shift. Here at the house, it’s 32 degrees but pavement is mostly dry with some moisture in sheltered areas. Nothing freezing though, even on areas normally prone to icing.
I’m checking police scanners for problems around the region and will update either on this forum or my blog.
There were some expected issues in and around the Cincy area. However, no significant power outages as of this hour in Indy or Cincy.
Despite about 0.3″ ice accumulation, things seem to be not as serious at least from a power outage standpoint. Let’s hope it stays that way.
Road conditions on I71 from Carrollton to Cincy and I75 from Williamstown to Cincy, icy patches.
I think next weekend and beyond should be very interesting. By next weekend the NAO is on its way down to -2 on some models and AO is also tanking.
As expected, SPC did put out their convective outlook for Sun/Mon time frame with slight risk category for most of western KY from Louisville and Bowling Green westward. Squall line with isolated embedded tornado threat.
Not expected at all. Conditions shown on the GFS and NAM prompt at least a slight risk that extends into eastern KY. This thing could mean serious business.
That’s true and maybe it will cover the eastern part of the state as well. However, the valid time frame for the risk of severe weather for that particular outlook had not included the eastern sections of the state.
From 7am Sunday to 7am Monday was for the outlook. Granted, I thought the system was moving fast enough to reach the eastern part of the state by 7am Monday morning. We’ll take a look at the models again and see if there are any differences in timing.
I just looked at the KLEX past observations. It doesn’t even look as if there was even .01 of precipitation, liquid or frozen, at least at the airpt.
Thanks for all you do Chris. You’re our “go to” guy for Kentucky weather, that’s for sure!
When you say “interesting” starting next weekend, boy, I hope so. I can’t believe how warm this winter has been so far. Even the cold snaps are quickly pushed out for temps in the 50s like they will be tomorrow. A negative NAO should help.
Well, I was shook awake abut 2:30 this morning with booming thunder and very heavy rain here in Somerset. I noticed that a severe warning ws put out just east of us, so I am thinking it gathered more steam as it went on by. but it had a pretty good head of it while it was here.
Oh yeah, went to bed, andthe temp was 53.8 degrees. When I got up a few minutes ago, it was 41.3. So, we did have a good sized temp drop.
Don’t know what interesting means for next weekend, but I am looking forward to your thoughts on it!
We got the same thing about 4 am
Thanks CB for the update…After next week gets interesting. HHHMMM haven’t we heard that before. It seems this winter has been full of comments (by all mets) about next week or next month. I will believe it when I see it. Not bashing Chris here just stating the facts that this winter has been trouble for all mets. It just seems like everytime the models show a cooling trend for us something seems to mess it up or they change. The pattern has been a rollercoster of WARM w/Rain/ Cold / WARM w/rain / Cold / Warm w/rain since November.
Let us snow lovers have at least a month of cold and snowy weather. I I will only believe it is coming when I actually see it.
Have a great Saturday everyone……
Have to agree!
Exactly. Been looking ahead since november.
i agree not looking for anything it will change but love ya chris its just been a very depressing winter…….
Nothing happened here last nite. That’s fine with me because I’m tired of the mud and so are my horses. Damp, misty and 31 this morning.
Hey Wendy T., I am with you. The less that happens, the happier I am! The dadblasted wind on Tuesday had our horses in a tizzy and the ground was mush. We’ve got hoof prints deep enough to fall in all around the farm. I want some sub-freezing temps to keep the ground hard.
Please please please is it EVER gonna SNOW????????? Worst winter EVER!!!!
Snow Queen, we have also been disappointed with the low snowfall this year. However, let’s keep our hopes up, as we still have the second half of winter!
Woke up to around a quarter inch of ice here in Boone county this morning. The poor dogs were skating on the patio.
Woke up about 2:30 this morning with a thunderstorm in the area. Ended up getting slammed 3 times overnight. The storm that issued us under the warning brought extremely heavy rains, strong winds, dangerous lightening, and loud rolling thunders, I didn’t see any hail tho. It looked like a hurricane when looking out the window. Now if we can get snow to move in like last nights thunderstorms, we might see something more than an ankle biter. Look ahead with our dreams of snow. Without dreaming, life would be boring. SNOW! SNOW! SNOW!
I am not giving up hope and always looking ahead 🙂
😀 Every aspect of life has disappointments, no reason to bury your head and stop living & hoping.
With this kind of crazy weather things can happen in an instant and change in a moments notice… 🙂
Seen flurries in London
I see a definite trend where the expected Arctic air keeps shifting out a week. At what point do we regress? 😉
4 am alarm clock by God above..severe thunderstorms with hail that coated my porch!! came rolling thru and rolled me out of bed way to early for a Saturday morning…which was ok..because we had 2 scared little girls and the scared dog ! come rolling in the bed with mommy/daddy this morning…ugh…2pots of coffee later not feeling to bad… 🙂
Latest update from SPC now includes most of Kentucky in slight risk category for severe weather Sun/Mon time frame 7am-7am.
Looks like a good map so far to me. Will be interested in probabilities that relate to tornado and wind damage threat later. Still think isolated tornado threat exists across western Ky to Louisville.
hmmm… when I woke up this morning, the hourly weather said that the high was 40 in Lexington today and that we should hit 40 by about 1:30 or 2. The thermometer has not risen above 28 since I climbed out of bed to up the heat. I have some serious doubts that anyone knows what the weather’s thinking anymore.
from Thunderstorms/61* this morning to low clouds, fog, and drizzle/37*…blah..
At least things are interesting as far as weather goes around here…..if there can’t be snow I’ll gladly take thunderstorms anyday! I’m a weather nerd indeed 😉
HIRESW graphics support possible severe weather setup. Dewpoints expected to spike into the 60’s for western KY and mid to upper 50’s all the way to Louisville. Looks like a squall line with surface winds, on average, expected to reach 45-50mph. However, winds just above the surface will be running about 60-70mph. It is not out of the question for these winds to mix down to the surface in some of the heavier cells along the line. Isolated tornado threat still there also.
