Good Tuesday to one and all. We are coming off yet another extreme weather event across the bluegrass state. Monday gave several cities the warmest temps ever recorded this late in the year. So, what does mother nature have for her next act? It’s looking more and more like a period of extreme winter weather across the country in the coming weeks.
Today starts with rain slowly moving out of the state, leaving behind near 2″ in some areas…
A chillier wind will blow, but today’s temps are nowhere near being labeled as cold for this time of year.
Winds will become very gusty again late Wednesday as we another system rolls into the region. This will bring gusty showers in here by Wednesday evening. Some of that may have a couple of snowflakes mixing in on the backside Thursday morning…
Much colder air then filters in here behind that late Thursday into Friday. A strong northwesterly wind flow can spawn some snow showers and flurries across central and eastern Kentucky…
There’s a chance for a light accumulation from that, especially in the mountains across the east.
New Year’s Weekend will feature a weak system moving in here and may begin as a mix of rain and snow for New Year’s Eve. Temps will be above freezing, so there are no worries about anything other than some wet flakes. Those showers linger into New Year’s Day as we wait on a more potent system to arrive on Monday.
That system may have high winds and thunderstorms with it. Watch both systems on the GFS…
The Canadian is a littler colder with the New Year’s System…
Just had a power outage after recording a 44mph gust, so I’m ending this update early via my phone.
I’ll talk about the January harsh winter winter weather potential with updates later today. Make it a good one and take care.
Thanks chris.
I do have a favor to ask tho, give your thoughts on the weather from the 5th to 12th time period. I’ve got somewhere I need to be, and would like know the weather during this time. That is still a little less than a few weeks out, and we know how things can be different then expected from that far away. .
Another 1 + inch in Harlan–how many times have I posted this comment lately? I have topped 8 inches for the monthly total when I left the house this morning at 7:45 with the rain pushing out of the area right now.
Hopefully , the next several weeks to come will bring several inches of snow to continue our wonderfully wild, active weather pattern!
70 degrees this time of the year feels nice but I prefer my cold weather to match the season as this is not south Florida…
2 inches of rain here last night. 6.7 for month and 9.25 the last 30 days
Thanks Chris. Wind and thunder with very heavy rain woke me up in the night. Don’t know how much rain we had, as I have taken my rain gauge in for the winter so it wouldn’t freeze and burst.. Maybe I should have left it out for a bit longer? Anyway, looks like an epic battle between cold and warm for the next few days. Although my electric bill likes the warmer temps, I still am hoping for some cold weather. We really do need some cold to help with germs and bugs and stuff. So I won’t get upset if it turns cold. A good snow would not be unwelcome to me either. Others in my family are not on board with that one, but I’ve always been a snow lover.
Anyway, I hope everyone has a great Tuesday. Thanks Chris for everything you have done for us weather freaks this past year!
Haha, there’s that word again, potential. Not falling for it old man winter haha
The Darkside is strong in Lucy. Her weapon of choice is a football. Hopefully Luke Bailey does not fall to the seduction of the Darkside.
Pretty remarkable how pessimistic this board is compared to other boards who don’t nearly see the same annual amount of snow as Kentuckians. I’ll take potential over no potential every day of the week.
Count Rodger in the “he’ll believe it when he sees it” category. “Potential” hasn’t gotten us anywhere yet this season. Rodger in Dodger
I get Rodger’s POV. As a Nashvillian, while we did get 10″ during Jonas last year, I’m pretty much used to driving north a few times a winter to see appreciable snow. It’s become a family tradition nowadays hence why I pay close attention to CB’s blog. Much better than praying for the magic to happen IMBY.
Rodger LOVES Nashville and would consider moving there but as you say it’s too far south to get appreciable snow other than once every several years. But the way things are going, Rodger might need to move to Chicago to get appreciable snow – ugh! Rodger in Dodger
