Good Sunday, everyone. We have a light snow maker ready to blow across the bluegrass state today. This will put down enough snow to cause some travel issues at times, especially this evening into Monday morning.
Let’s break down how this system may play out…
- The day starts with snow showers and flurries across the south and east. That action can be just feisty enough to put down some light accumulations.
- The main system dives in from the northwest later this afternoon and evening. That’s when an overall swath of light snow develops across much of the region.
- Embedded within this light snow will be streaks of moderate to heavy snow squalls. Those really complicate the forecast and can cause some big variations in totals in just a few miles.
- There continues to be just enough instability for a thunder mention with one of these snow squalls.
- My overall thoughts on accumulations haven’t changed much, but I’ve tried to hone in a little more…
Those numbers and lines are not absolute by any means, especially with snow squalls entering the equation. There will be some holes in there where you come in with the under. On the flip side, there will be some spots likely hitting the over.
Winds are going to be very gusty during this time, so you can get some mini blizzard looking squalls late this afternoon into this evening. That’s when much of the accumulating action looks to take place.

I will update things later today, so check back. Have a great Sunday and take care.
Looking forward to the snow!! 🙂
Will be hard to get a true measurement of the snow with the wind whipping around.
I am looking forward to see which product will I see more of on the roads salt or snow.
I’m going with salt
Ruh-roh. The Euro model is back to supporting milder air late next week. The SW based systems really are the Achilles heel of this model, a true waffle maker…the Kryptonite…well, every model has its weakness.
Perhaps wh CB did not mention beyond the chances today.
I guess everybody forgot what he said about the euro yesterday
Ssh! Can’t fuel the drama! Will be curious if we get a threat mode. Equally curious why no mention in CB’s post. Border line Fencetucky temps perhaps hard to forecast ATM.
See post below. You know the drill Darth 😉
These warmer than anticipated temps have put a damper on expectations and rightfully so in this snow starved winter in much of the area.
Clipper taking decent snow track but may produce rain. Say’s it all about this Winter.
Yeah, it is about 5 degrees warmer in SE KY than what was expected which could really hurt us today…we shall see:/
My temperature has trended higher overnight…from 32 to now 35.
Lower here from 44 to 36
We’re looking forward to a little snow over the next day or so. Hope we get something more substantial with the systems later this week.
Thanks Chris!
Any chance the advisory expands up into Boyd county as well?
No mention of the system next weekend? That`s not a good sign.
He usually doesn’t when we are dealing with a system. I expect after this moves through he will focus on the weekend.
I was hoping that’s the case. 🙂
As I stated before , the storm moved east, and what looked like at least 2 inches for Louisville, now appears to be a dusting. Hope for snow, but save excitement for the day snowflakes fly and models show a snowstorm .
You said you were kidding before
Using the SPC’s Hourly Mesoscale Analysis for 850mb, the temperature at -6 to -7 degrees Celsius covering southern Kentucky at the moment suggests a possible rain/snow mix for now.
I would like for that number to be at -8 to support all snow. That number runs through Louisville to Frankfort to near Ashland.
Regardless, if surface temperatures are above freezing, melting will take place. It will be interesting to see how this trends throughout the day into the evening. For snow lovers, hopefully the heaviest will occur after dark when colder air should be filtering in.
The GFS seems to be pointing towards a messy system next weekend with the low moving right over KY. Someone between southern Ohio and northern Tenn is going to get some freezing rain out of it. It’s probably moving too fast to rise to the level of “ice storm” but it looks messy. Looks like a huge warmup the following weekend. 60s-70s maybe?
Seems most could be on the low end of the map. Do not recall a clipper system dampened as much by warm air as this one appears when starting out. Usually the case for southern Feds. Odd stuff.
Could this be the first winter without a CB threat mode? We have had wimpy snow winters, but this one could take the wimpy prize. In past winters at least we got some threat modes and then they mainly missed.
Be interesting how the system today pans out. Harbinger of the remaining winter perhaps.
“Could this be the first winter without a CB threat mode?”
Wouldn’t that have been a truly bold prediction to make in a winter outlook forecast, “Bold Prediction – Zero threat modes for the entire winter!”? The resulting thread would out salt any UK basketball discussion.
Yep. Ironic today even we could be on the low end of an already low map.
FWIW, flurries in Winchester 🙂
“Those numbers and lines are not absolute by any means, especially with snow squalls entering the equation. There will be some holes in there where you come in with the under. On the flip side, there will be some spots likely hitting the over.”
Bulletproof forecast! If you get anything from zero to over achieving it’s exactly accurate. 😉
CB’s original winter outlook about winter being over mid-Jan is still solid. Yes, he didn’t foresee a possible top 10 warmest January or a slightly mild December where Old Man Winter punked him hard, but even with that his idea about nothing to see here moving forward is still gospel. The Bold Prediction would be the only exception in play here. Don’t give up the faith CB!
CB apparently nailed it, but hoping the ice part misses.
Northern Kentucky has really missed out on any snow, even these little Clipper systems, the last two winters. I can’t believe that once again the advisories are just to the south of us.
Light snow in Clay County.
I’m not sure about other areas where the radar is showing rain, but we have snow falling right now in Columbia.
Sun peaking out in Rodger’s backyard as he writes this at 10:10 est. This pathetic winter keeps rolling along with 100% chance of disappointment. Even clippers are too warm to be all snow. Can’t get anything from the south to combine with cold from the north at the right time. Bring on spring if this is the “best” Old Man Winter can do! 40th anniversary of the freezing of the Ohio River was this past week. Very difficult to not think about THAT and not believe climate change IS real!
This^^^ 100%.!!!
I remember the freezing of the Ohio and people walking on it. Speaking of climate change, the Western Interior Seaway was a shallow ocean that split our nation as it is today.
We got three record level storms the past three winters and areas to the south got snow this winter. There have been warmer near snowless winters way way before anyone was born.
It’s Fencetucky for a reason 😉
Past two winters. Not three.
Pouring the snow in Stearns:)
37 degrees in Nashville, yucky rain sprinkles; Spring is so close yet so far…..
Some snow this evening for Nashville but little if any accumulation.
But maybe an inch or so of snow is possible up on the Tennessee Plateau.
Temps are the ultimate nemesis with this clipper and mostly likely the next week’s storm…too warm with no arctic air injection.
Already at 40 in Harlan with a little dusting on the mountain tops but 0 inches in most areas including at the house, although the main energy hasn’t hit yet.
This winter stinks though: I think we all agree on that from the perspective of wanting a true winter…awesome if you dont:(
Interesting that the Gulf waters are running considerably above average…..which in turn could be one of many factors that possibly could fuel a rather active severe weather season this spring.
Unlike the winter of 2009-10 when the cold waters were partially responsible in greatly delaying the spring 2010 severe wx season. One may recall it was so persistently cold in Florida that lizards were falling out of trees like coconuts. 😉 Indeed, populations of American Crocs were unable to survive from Tampa on north.
Just walked my dog and saw three lonely snowflakes. Looks like snow on radar but when it gets near Ashland it disappears before it gets to Huntington. This looks a lot like last Friday , I don’t even see a dusting in my area.
38 and rain falling in Knox county
Medium level snow mix in Winchester. Heading back from church 🙂
I drove through there from London this morning heading into TN. It was snowing pretty good at that time. Looks to still be snowing at London from the camera views CB posted.
Snow showers ended for the most part on the other side of Pineville this morning.
Pouring sleet right now in my area of Louisville. Rhodes here starting to get a little bit slick. Don’t guess that’s going to improve much with temperatures dropping through the day.
Looks like another crop dusting, and doesn’t look like temps are gonna cooperate in central ky…patterns are holding true for the old YAWN meter, unfortunately
Looks like Central Kentucky is in the Donut Hole on the radar.
I’l take the donut hole and give you the rain we are getting in southern Ky if you’ll trade!
I can’t trade I’m in Southern Ohio where it snowing lightly.
lol. lucky!!!!
Its picking up a bit but not sticking.
Ok. I was studying the 850mb line. The temps at that level are cooling statewide. Surface temperatures at my house in Valley Station have cooled to 33, down 2 degrees from this morning.
I would hazard a guess that snow will be the dominant precipitation within a few hours.
Winchester has had steady non sticking snow for a several hours with very wet ground. Ten miles away in Richmond, not a sign of precipitation. Dry.
I recall snow falling in Louisville several winters ago that even when it snowed heavily at times for a few hours, it all melted as it fell. Ok, the ground was a kinda wet white, but the official snow total for that day was something like an inch and a half. I’m thinking how did they measure that?
Radar filling in nicely in Indiana and Illinois
Been pouring the snow in greenup for the past hour
Weather variations in the last 50 years do not prove climate change. Back in 1880 there were 16 days above 32 degrees in January. Obviously, since that time there have been many cold winters. Weather is cyclic.
The overall trend of the Earth’s climate is warming and there are major changes occurring globally in terms of droughts and flooding. These are the results of climate change.
You can’t just look at temperatures/precipitation in one area.
I was referring to the post above referencing the freezing of the Ohio in 1978 and climate change. One cold or warm winter does not confirm climate change–and oh yes, someday the earth will burn.
Got it. I thought you were saying the previous warm days in January negated the existence of climate change.
Weather is not climate, and your backyard is not the globe.
Thanks Chris. We’ve had some pretty good snow showers here in Somerset already but nothing is stocking so far. Really pretty coming down though. Have a great and safe afternoon all.
My husband just measured 1 and 3 quarters inches at our house in Northwestern Lewis Co. And, no winter wx advisory? Why? This was measured at 2:30 p.m. Be safe everyone.
Not a flake yet in Richmond, but Winchester has had scenic snow all morning and early afternoon. Non sticking, but scenic snow at least looks pretty.
It’s a sad day when even a sure thing clipper cant come together and unfortunately for snow lovers, each run of the models shows “next weekend” slipping away as well.
Looks like its coming together pretty well to me….
Obviously some of you didn’t pay attention to what Chris said about the snow not really filling in until this evening. That’s why that snowfall map says it goes through Monday morning for those of you who are illiterate
I’m sure no one here could type a coherent sentence if they were “illiterate”. 😉
I’ve met several people who are illiterate, yet they can still write a sentence
Light snow falling again in Clay. Had a white ground earlier, but it all melted. Hoping for more tonight.
It has been snowing hard in Greenup Co. for the past 3 hours but no accumulation. Here’s hoping something good happens this evening or tonight.
I’m here off w hollow in greenup and its finally starting to stick….I’m up on a ridge though
Just as I posted I looked outside and it was beginning to stick at about 4:05ish. Now turning into a snow/sleet mix with temps hovering around freezing.
So far it looks like.NE ky is the sweet spot, yet there is no advisory for us lol…laughable
True, and there is no need for an advisory for most points south of you.
Chris did say this evening through the morning. Most of you guys think it should have been snowing heavily all day. 29 degrees in south Woodford County. I’ll wait to hear from Chris and let the rest of the negative Nellies sweat , wonder and worry.
first off as sum u may know ive been thru a loss last month or so. ole Rolo lost the love of his life. the love who got him sober years ago, the love who swore she wasn’t cheating on me. that said like George Jones sand HE STOP LOVING HER TODAY, that way I feel. I may learn luve with it someday but right now its pretty hard.
bnow there wasn’t going be any sticking till after dark u dummies, so watch bout 6 as the batch swings in the snow start to stick. now looking like its moving farther north than expected but as it hits the miuntains it will get some lift and BOOM couple inches possible. so ROLO lives he has not left, just been watching the blog from a far
Is it supposed to snow this evening/tonight in Ashland?
Sorry to hear about your loss! Hope things get better soon
Sorry to hear that, Rolo.
Nice to here from you ROLO. Hope all turns around for you and CB can get you an Old skool Thumping before the winter is up.
Glad to see you back, Rolo!
Hang in there Rolo and take care.
Heavy snow for about an hour here east of Huntington. Ground is covered but not on concrete which is good. Maybe an inch, very pretty in the trees. Good call Mr. Bailey.
Mason county here…same! Roads are good and scenic view is pretty. And just now our local Mets are saying 1 to 3 smh
76 comments for an ankle biter snow? Shows you how dismal this winter has been.
Any particular reason Charleston NWS isn’t
Issuing an advisory for us in the
tristate area?
local mets in louisville already puting freezing rain in 10 day forecast. Im curious as to 6-7 days or 9-10 day system has the most potential?
That and mix makes more sense than mainly snow. The warm air seems to not want to be denied as far as impact. Maybe CB’s outlook will be even more than too good? He did make a bold call for ice as the main threat- not snow.
sad winter
A dusting in frankfort area, an inch tops with this one, spring sounding better by the day now.
Bring spring. What a bummer this winter has been. Ankle biter snows getting love. Sad times.
Its been pouring the snow here in greenup for a good 2 hours now
Snow flurries now rain in huntington
So far in Richmond, just some flurry action. The winter of 2017 for snow seems like a Seinfeld episode. A lot about nothing. Lots of words, tweets, etc- but virtually no snow. Perhaps we will bust an inch of snow action overnight 🙂 😉
Looks like CB’s winter outlook was too good- save for the ice- forget dat 🙂
